To think we should move Christmas to a different month?

Christmas and all it’s super-spreading events seems to come smack-bang in the middle of Covid and flu season.

Since covid and it’s ever-changing variants appear to be here for good would it not make sense to rearrange Christmas dates?

Perhaps March or April instead.

You need your head examining OP, If you want to move your Christmas then go right ahead but I will be having mine on December 25thsame as every other year and covid wont bloody stop me and neither will Boris.

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 16/12/2021 18:14

seasonal stuff won't be available in June!!

xmas tree's aren't harvested in the summer....turkeys aren't fattened up and reared in summer months...its not dark til 10 so kids won't see any xmas lights....theres no 2 week school holidays in June......mulled wine and gingerbread lattes wont taste the same in the summer heat.....chocolate coins will all melt

OldaRailer · 16/12/2021 18:15

You can do some if it yourself.
I'm going to see if we can do a family gathering in the better weather.

ilovesooty · 16/12/2021 18:15

@Vapeyvapevape

You can’t move Christmas! It would cock up all the Christmas carols - In the Bleak Midwinter, Good King Wenceslas etc
And there would have to be a complete redesign of Christmas cards.
LuckyAmy1986 · 16/12/2021 18:15

@GutsInMay oh thank you for sharing that with me. Regardless of whether that was the ACTUAL date or not, it's the ACTUAL date that has been chosen to commemorate the birth of Jesus.

Oh here you go, google will help explain better than me; if you are not religious you may not know this:

it was around the year 273 that the church considered commandeering the existing pagan festival of winter solstice as fitting time to honor the son of God. ... Western Christians officially began celebrating December 25 as the birth of Jesus in 336 AD. So there you have it!

I'd love you to come back to me on this, love to know what point you were trying to make!

Gretaburley · 16/12/2021 18:15

@Hummingbirdcake
Winter without Christmas would be shit.

Winter without Christmas is happening for the second year running, how more shit can it get.

Allandria · 16/12/2021 18:15

How many of you are actually going to feel comfortable doing Christmassy things this December? Work dos, pantomimes, Christmas parties, family get together? Ditto last year. Likely the case next year. It just doesn’t seem to work in peak germ season, just an unfortunate coincidence but it falls slap bang at the wrong time and makes things worse.

Are posters really arguing that Christmas being wintery and snowy and sparkly is more important than reducing covid outbreaks at the worst time?

I feel entirely comfortable with it, thank you. Just as I have done when we’ve had awful flu seasons and the NHS has been under pressure. Off to the theatre tonight!
nosyupnorth · 16/12/2021 18:17

Christmas being on christmas is more important than... whatever arbitary nonsense you're spewing. You realise covid doesn't hibernate for the summer right, omicron would still have hit.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 16/12/2021 18:17

I agree OP and not just because of covid etc but also because it's the worst time of year to be driving around the country doing duty visits to aged relatives. I think we should big up Easter.

Although Easter can be colder. But at least the clocks have gone forward and there is plenty of daylight.

yeah, you mean a barbecue in the garden?
Kinneddar · 16/12/2021 18:18

So how would this work. You do realise Christmas is celebrated the world over. Its summer in some countries and winter in others. So do we move it to OUR summer which means other countries will be winter or do we have it as a summer holiday so countries will celebrate it different dates 🤔

You do realise Christmas isn't just a nice wee holiday. It actually has a meaning

Might be best you don't come online after a few sherries.

Batshit thread 🙄

Xmas Grin
SinisterBumFacedCat · 16/12/2021 18:18

Tbh I have always thought Xmas happens way too early into winter, there’s all the fun and excitement followed by months of grim cold boredom until April, plus December doesn’t realistically have much chance of snow compared to February. Do yes OP, let’s leave the Xmas lights up and have it mid February EVERY YEAR.

I wasn't going to do any of those things anyway.
NameChanged15729 · 16/12/2021 18:19

Yes. I’m arguing that. If you want to isolate and move your Christmas to June... be my guest but let everyone else choose their own risks.

Christmas is never sparkly and snowy it's bleak and rainy!

CaptainThe95thRifles · 16/12/2021 18:20

So does the Southern hemisphere keep it in December, and we have Christmas at different times of the year, or do we all move to June so that we're alright and screw any areas for whom this is worse?

I'm not enticed by the concept of a summer Christmas, but the prospect of two in the year could be entertaining, mostly because you could avoid both with careful holiday planning.

Thatsplentyjack · 16/12/2021 18:20

How about YOU just don't go to any of the things you listed and you will be fine.

Yes we could big up Candlemas. That would work too.
flamedancer · 16/12/2021 18:20

Erm did you actually ask why December? You can't change the date of Jesus's birth 😂

Vapeyvapevape · 16/12/2021 18:21

@ilovesooty and Father Christmas would look a bit naff sitting in a grotto (or beach hut) wearing a cozzie!

OldaRailer · 16/12/2021 18:21

It's only snowy when you have planned to travel to see family. At which point it's nerve-wracking not scenic.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 16/12/2021 18:21

well to be fair, he wasn't born in December anyway. Wasn't he actually born closer to Easter?
