Does anyone snack in the evening

I generally do. But recently snacking has got worse in that I will have one slice of cake and then want some chocolate afterwards. Sometimes I have snarfed a large bar of chocolate, 6 x foxes chocolaty biscuits and a large slice of cheesecake. I eat healthy in the day (porridge, nuts, fruit etc) but after dinner, it's like the sweet monster comes out - have put on a couple of stone since beginning of year.

Just wondering if anyone else has a pudding in the evening? On talking to my friends they say that if there dinner is a large enough portion then you shouldn't need a snack at night.

Yes. I need help Sad

AuntieMarys · 16/12/2021 12:52

We don't...because I don't buy it. Otherwise we would. We eat at 7pm and then that's it till morning

Newchallenge · 16/12/2021 12:53

Me too OP. It's not about hunger, more habit for me.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 16/12/2021 12:54

No. I’m not hungry after dinner and also, I don’t buy food like that. If I snack, I’ll have a Clementine or similar.

CovidisaThiefofJoyandcandoone · 16/12/2021 12:54

Same.
Have been better for past 10 days though and am feeling benefit.

BridStar · 16/12/2021 12:54

No. Dinner, then that's it.

Just don't have junk in the house.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/12/2021 12:55

I know I shouldn't but I do. Usually it's nuts or crisps, but last night after watching the news, I stress-ate a whole box of Toffifees.

RampantIvy · 16/12/2021 12:56

No. We eat our main meal at about 6.30 so I am too full to eat anything else until breakfast. I don't generally keep chocolate and cake in the house anyway.

DingoDango · 16/12/2021 12:58

I'm terrible at the moment as the house is full of cake, mince pies, chocolates etc.

But normally I get into my PJs and clean my teeth after dinner while the DC are in the bath. Then it's enough to stop me having anything other than water.

Currently of course I'm avoiding that technique and have gained 4lb to show for it. Blush

Sparkai · 16/12/2021 12:59

For me a lot of it is routine. So if I have a few days of "treats" then I crave more and more. The hardest part is breaking the cycle for a week or so, then I can go back to not wanting to snack.

Is your tea late enough?

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 16/12/2021 13:00

Of course you don't need snacks after dinner. That doesn't mean evening snacking is unusual - I'd bet at least half the adult population do it.

We used to snack loads in the evening after the children went to bed. I'm pretty sure its a big part of the reason I became obese. It's cozy and indulgent and can be sociable but it's pretty much always unnecessary, as almost all snacking is.

I can't let myself snack on a regular basis having lost weight as I'd definitely end up back where I started. I have had Christmas sweet foods after dinner with the family a few times recently and I'm always hungrier the next day because of the blood sugar spikes and crashes, its very easy to get into a vicious cycle of thinking you (generic you) need a snack because of messed up blood sugar levels actually caused eating too much snack food.

Its tempting and enjoyable at the time but such a bad idea. I think everyone knows that really.

icedcoffees · 16/12/2021 13:01

Yes - every night but I don't like eating big meals so everything I eat tends to be snacky anyway.

viques · 16/12/2021 13:01

No, I decided a couple of years ago that once I have finished eating my evening meal that is it until breakfast. I try to have finished eating about about half past seven , a decent sized main meal (fish and vegetables , or vegetables and pasta usually, sometimes with fruit, or cheese and crackers or a mini magnum afterwards but not always) I do often drink tea at about 9.00 but generally that is it for the day. I think it is a good thing to let your digestive system have a break. Most snack foods are of little nutritional value so it is about pointless grazing . I am not totally rigid in this btw, I will eat later if I am out, or eating at someone else’s house, and happily dive into someone else’s chocolates or wasabi nibbles ! But that is what I do at home.

MaskingForIt · 16/12/2021 13:01

No. I eat dinner, wash up and tidy/ “close down” the kitchen, then clean my teeth.

I don’t have cakes, crisps, sweets, boxes of Toffiffees etc in the house. Capitalism is getting rich on your weakness and the only one losing is you. But not weight. You’re gaining weight.

OverByYer · 16/12/2021 13:02

I don't but even as a kid wasn't something that we did. Maybe you need to eat more in the day to fill you up so you aren't hungry in the evening?

TwinklyBranch · 16/12/2021 13:02

Sometimes. Things like a piece of a piece of fruit/yoghurt for pudding, maybe a couple of biscuits. If I'm hungry before bed I'll have a slice of toast. I tend to have chocolate with my afternoon cuppa rather than in the evening.

KrispyKale · 16/12/2021 13:03

I stopped snacking in the afternoon/evening except for carrot sticks and satsumas 😂. That means I need a better lunch or brunch.
Then I was hungry enough to eat a more satisfying dinner.
(I do avoid having sweet snacky stuff or crisps in cupboards because I will munch them hungry or not.)
I basically aim now to eat well and feel satisfied at dinner then not graze.

fellrunner85 · 16/12/2021 13:03

Yes; it works for me as I run in the mornings, so some extra food the night before fuels that. Usually it'll be cheese and crackers, or some chocolate.

lazylinguist · 16/12/2021 13:04

No. I'm no saint food-wise, I have just never been in the habit of evening snacking. If anything, around 4pm is my snack witching hour. After I've had dinner in the evening I literally never eat anything else.

KrispyKale · 16/12/2021 13:05

@TheYearOfSmallThings

I know I shouldn't but I do. Usually it's nuts or crisps, but last night after watching the news, I stress-ate a whole box of Toffifees.
This is where the public health messaging is really bugging me: stress levels in normal people are sky high as the professors try to get through to the dunderheads (including the current administration!)
viques · 16/12/2021 13:06

I also read somewhere that the sugar spike after eating lasts longer in the evening, so your body is having to work harder to deal with that, i think our bodies are designed not to eat at night, for most of human history people have gone to bed when it gets dark, it is only in the last couple of hundred years that this has changed.

Soraya5 · 16/12/2021 13:08

I have found that if evening snacking is a habit, it's easier to limit it than to cut out altogether. So now I allow myself a snack in the evening, but I don't allow snacking at any other time and I only allow a limited amount (e.g. two biscuits). An alternative is to eat your evening meal late so that you're not hungry in the evenings.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/12/2021 13:08

Capitalism is getting rich on your weakness and the only one losing is you. But not weight. You’re gaining weight.

So true! But if capitalism shut up shop tomorrow I'd be out there sucking honey from a tree trunk and fighting the bears for hazelnuts. I would find way to snack.

Mumoblue · 16/12/2021 13:10

Yeah, but I graze on and off through the day. I have terrible acid reflux so it’s better for me to just eat when I’m hungry.

RoastedParnsip · 16/12/2021 13:11

No but if I could I would! I have dysphagia and miss eating so bad. Sad
Long as your not obese I don't see the problem with snacking.
