Does anyone snack in the evening

Frankbutchersfangs · 16/12/2021 12:49

I generally do. But recently snacking has got worse in that I will have one slice of cake and then want some chocolate afterwards. Sometimes I have snarfed a large bar of chocolate, 6 x foxes chocolaty biscuits and a large slice of cheesecake. I eat healthy in the day (porridge, nuts, fruit etc) but after dinner, it's like the sweet monster comes out - have put on a couple of stone since beginning of year.

Just wondering if anyone else has a pudding in the evening? On talking to my friends they say that if there dinner is a large enough portion then you shouldn't need a snack at night.

I've always craved snacks in the evening and try to keep my house snack free otherwise I'd eat it. But this time of year is difficult and I've fell off the snack-free-wagon again.

What do you eat for tea, and what time do you eat?
Planesmistakenforstars · 17/12/2021 15:10

No, and I think it's habit more than anything because I certainly love food and have little willpower when it comes to it. I was always given an early tea as a child and never any snacks between meals, and I still eat the same way now. Portion size is another matter, but it never occurs to me to snack.

GotToGoBye · 17/12/2021 15:27

Yes, it’s a terrible habit, I’m not even that hungry

Isababybel · 17/12/2021 16:14

Only on Fridays when ive been drinking Xmas GrinWine

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 17/12/2021 16:48

I don’t snack but I do love a glass of wine most evenings. (When I can, which is 1-2 x pw)

I work 60-80 hrs per week and sometimes
just want a glass and to ready a book to relax and enjoy some downtime.

Franca123 · 17/12/2021 18:21

Peppermint tea and coffee piece of fruit. Don't have junk in the house. Easy.

MistletoeHolly · 17/12/2021 18:23

I’m on Amitriptyline- I think this is what drives my sweet stuff craving in the evening (this is when I take it). So I’m going to try lower carb dinners to see if this will help

georgarina · 17/12/2021 18:25

In order to avoid that urge at night, I either
-chat on the phone
-have a bath
-eat an ice lolly (takes ages without many calories)

CovidisaThiefofJoyandcandoone · 17/12/2021 18:35

Like the bath idea

Rno3gfr · 17/12/2021 18:40

I do. I love to balance out my dinner with something sweet afterwards, followed by crisps or something to balance that out! I find that if I eat a protein heavy lunch in the middle of the day then I don’t have these cravings

thewooster · 17/12/2021 18:42

@RampantIvy I eat about 5.30pm and have a proper dinner such as fish or meat, new potatoes and veg. But I get hungry by 8pm. I've been the same for years and need a lot of willpower to avoid snacks.

RampantIvy · 17/12/2021 18:57

5.30 is very early though, so it isn't surprising. It is nearly 7pm and I am just about to eat.

TuftyMarmoset · 17/12/2021 19:07

@@thewooster why do you eat so early? Could you eat a bit later eg 7pm?

SallyWD · 17/12/2021 19:07

I eat really early because I have 2 meals a day (I'm doing 16/8 so have brunch and then early dinner). I often eat around 4.30 or 5pm. I'm not hungry at bedtime but I do eat really big, filling meals.

Notimetolive · 17/12/2021 19:14

I have no idea how you could eat enough at 6.30 in the evening to keep you full enough to last until 8 am.

I eat early evening, usually before 6, because I go straight out again every night for an hour or two. By 9 pm I’m hungry. No way could I go to bed without a snack as I would be awake all night.
I eat enough at 6 pm to feel satisfied, I couldn’t eat extra to keep me going.

I must just need little and often.

My evening snack tends to be a yoghurt or mousse Monday to Thursday, with maybe crisps, nuts or chocolate reserved for weekends.

This is me. I eat such small portions that I get hungry every three hours or so, so in addition to trying to eat a protein heavy dinner, I’m going to eat Greek yogurt or cheese if I get hungry later

Yikes, what do you do that you work such long hours?
CovidisaThiefofJoyandcandoone · 18/12/2021 19:44

I think it’s different if you eat small portions.

I eat huge portions! Have bought small bowls from a charity shop.

CactusLemonSpice · 18/12/2021 20:07

I do. But for me it is 100% sugar cravings. If I don't have sweet things for a bit I lose the urge, but if I have some chocolate one day I am back snacking pretty quickly! It's like an addiction!

elliejjtiny · 18/12/2021 20:13

No, because if I start snacking I can't stop.

jelly79 · 18/12/2021 22:20

Im sat with bleach on my teeth. It's helped tonight

onedayoranother · 18/12/2021 22:36

Oh yes. I eat dinner relatively early with my daughter at about 6.30, and I'm back in the kitchen at 9. I don't go to bed too about midnight. It's not so much hunger as I love to eat! Something yummy, a good tv show, fire going - what could be better? Daytime eating no problem, but nighttime and I eat as many calories 9-12 as I did all day.

onedayoranother · 18/12/2021 22:38

And it's not snack food either - I'll make myself a sandwich or have some toast. And it's been trebly worse since the first lock down.

RampantIvy · 18/12/2021 22:43

Tonight we ate at about 6.45. I made a satay chicken and vegetable stir fry with home made flatbreads. It is now nearly 10.45 and I am still full.

If you eat at 6.30 and are hungry again at 9 do you think you maybe aren't eating enough protein @onedayoranother?
