Do you wash the toilet with the same cloth as the rest of the bathroom ?

I was always taught to have a special sponge / cloth which only gets used to wash / wipe the toilet.

The sink and shower etc are wiped down with a different cloth.

MIL uses the same cloth for the entire bathroom.

I find that strange. How do you do it ?

@KittenKong

What do you scrub it with the if you don’t use a brush?
@KittenKong - but what do you clean the toilet seat, top of cistern area, sides of toilet where seat is lifted up etc? brush can't clean those areas well.
vodkaredbullgirl · 14/12/2021 09:46

Toilet cleaned last and cloth into the wash.

Comedycook · 14/12/2021 09:49

One cloth

First clean mirrors
Then sink, then bath, then toilet
Cloth then gets binned

Sorry planet

AntiHop · 14/12/2021 09:49

Toilet last then hot wash

xmastreezz · 14/12/2021 09:51

I'm going to start a new thread about the toilet brushes. I really want to know.

I use a sponge for the sink and bath because a cloth isn’t abrasive enough to deal with the limescale buildup we get around the plug holes. I use loo roll and a loo brush for the loo.

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/12/2021 09:56

Please don't start a toilet brush thread Smile

2TurtleDovesInARow · 14/12/2021 09:59

Use the same and then put in the nappy wash (loo last). In all honesty though I can't remember the last time I cleaned the bathrooms, I leave it to the cleaner!

HalfWomanHalfMincePie · 14/12/2021 10:03

One cloth, whole bathroom, only washed every now and again but slightly too much antibacterial spray/solution and plenty of hot water.

Go ahead and judge me mn court Grin

MsJaneAusten · 14/12/2021 10:04

You do realise that the washing machine's job is to wash right? At a temperature that kills germs?
No wonder our planet is in the shit.

Oh thank goodness. I knew my people would turn up eventually Grin

Too late I just posted on the toilet brush thread 😈

MrsDThomas · 14/12/2021 10:11

I have a blue cloth for the loo.

Blue for loo
Green for screen (glass)

Anything else for the bath/sink

FOJN · 14/12/2021 10:11

I use a cloth with cleaning spray for the seat etc, brush for the bowl. Use one cloth and clean the toilet last. Keep separate rubber gloves for toilet and bathroom and soak the cloth in bleach afterwards before putting in the wash.

girlmom21 · 14/12/2021 10:17

I use the same cloth but clean the toilet last. I usually get through two cloths because they get wet when cleaning.

scramboeggster · 14/12/2021 10:20

No wonder our planet is in the shit.

Sadly, even if all MN ceased performative cleaning overnight, it wouldn't make much difference to the shit the planet is in.

OP, there's a Mumsnet trope that we all think toilet brushes are revolting germ factories. I think I have a vague memory of a thread where somebody said they take tissue, wipe the poo off the toilet bowl with their hands, then wash their hands thoroughly. I personally have a silicone 'brush' that can be cleaned.

It's a polarised issue here. You either douse everything in bleach and use disposable wipes made from the skins of endangered species, or you use the same loo brush that your mother had in the house you grew up in, and occasionally wipe down your surfaces in vinegar diluted with rainwater run-off. Choose your camp wisely.

BiBabbles · 14/12/2021 10:23

Same set of cloths, yes.

I have a dry thick cloth mainly for picking up hair as I've found hair a huge pain to get off the white goods here, never had it this bad before we moved but cleaning hair off is a battle even more if they're wet. I spray after wiping for hair, then use a different cloth to scrub things down with the toilet last. I have a separate cloth for the mirrors, window, shining up taps and other metal things in there sometimes.

They all go into the washing machine after and really, with washing hands afterwards, the rinsing pads and stuff in the sink (which DD1 somehow also gets on the shower), and the grime I find under our shower drain cover that I have to clean off very regularly, all of them likely have unsavoury muck.

I tried toilet paper, but it wasn't as well for that - I do find it useful for around the sink plughole though.

Jenster03 · 14/12/2021 10:27

The worst thing is the people who fully clean their toilet after every use.
That is actual insanity.

Panacotta · 14/12/2021 10:29

Do those of you who wash your cloths use a whole machine on hot for one cloth after each toilet/bathroom clean?

girlmom21 · 14/12/2021 10:33

No I throw it in with towels
girlmom21 · 14/12/2021 10:34

For clarity, you rinse the cloths once you've finished cleaning with them. Then put them in the washing machine with other things that need washing.

That's what washing machines are for.

BiddyPop · 14/12/2021 10:41

We have, over the years, managed to get plenty of both yellow and blue j-cloths - so yellows are kept for bathrooms only. Blue is for kitchen, polishing furniture, general dusting, mopping up spills, cleaning windows.....not all at once though - getting washed in between!

In the bathrooms, the toilet is the last thing to be done, so they are all done with the same cloth on each clean, (sink, then bath/shower, then loo cistern, then loo) which then goes straight into the wash. We also only use cloth on seat and rim, as we use a brush inside the bowl.

Our problem now is that JCloths are no longer available, and the cloths that are, are only blue. So we need to come up with a new system to separate out the bathroom cloths from the other cleaning cloths.

BiddyPop · 14/12/2021 10:43

Oh, and I generally change all the bathroom towels when I clean the bathroom, so all the towels and cleaning cloths go in together to the washing machine on a hot wash. Or else I will be doing a big cleaning day and have a lot of cloths from various jobs and will add the hand towel, tea towel and JCloth from the kitchen as well to make a full load.

girlmom21 · 14/12/2021 10:44

@BiddyPop you can get yellow j cloth style cloths on Amazon

Malacath · 14/12/2021 10:46

What I'd like to know is, where do people store rinsed out cleaning cloths when they're still wet? I'd hate to put them in with the dry dirty things in the wash basket but I also hate having a bucket in my kitchen to store cleaning cloths until I have enough for a hot towel/wipes wash. I clean a bit every day so I've always got wet cloths and wipes around. Don't want to store them in the machine as I'll be washing other things and it would make the machine smelly!
