Horse riders should pick up their poo!!

It’s surely a potential hazard leaving horse manure on the road!
Tractors are required to clean up excess mud they leave on the road, dog poo is collected by their owners.
So why can’t horse riders be required to show common decency if they are to use the road.
Apparently an outdated law from when horses were the main mode of transport allows this and prevents action being taken.
With the number of accidents never mind inconveniences caused by this negligence surely this should be amended?

@Kendodd

This thread has really changed my opinion of horse riders. I don't think one of you has shown even the slightest bit of concern for other Road users and the difficulty you create for them. We had wheelchair users describing how they have to pick your horse shit out of their wheels and young children running through piles of it. Not one of you cared.
"Changed your opinion"? I doubt it, from the way I'm reading things you'd already decided that they were red-coated toffs looking down upon the peasants.
DdraigGoch · 16/12/2021 05:30

So why can’t motorbike riders apply the same to their driving?
Because then they can't roar around at 120mph

HeckinMiffed · 16/12/2021 06:48

Did anyone else read the thread title and imagine horse riders hopping off their horses to squat, crap and leave a pile?
Just me?
That aside, horse poop is harmless and yabu to suggest that riders dismount whilst trying to hold their horse on a possibly busy road, scoop a poop of digested grass, put it where exactly and then attempt to remount and continue.
I used to ride, if a horse crapped while we were out we would cycle back on way home and kick it in gutter. That's if a gardener hadn't swept it up first!
I'm more bothered about bloody cats coming into my garden and crap in my plants. I pick it up and chuck it back in the owners garden!

@PoshPyjamas

As a cyclist I have always been really, really careful when passing horses... this thread is making me think thats probably not required.
Please continue to take care. It's unlikely the horse riders you meet are commenting on this thread. We're very grateful when you cycle considerately, it helps everyone to have a nice time and get home safely.
HeronLanyon · 16/12/2021 08:11

I find fresh poo less dangerous than poo which has been flattened by passing traffic, dried and then wetted by rain. Like a slick hockey puck. I had no idea I had this knowledge within me !

Maestoso · 16/12/2021 08:12

Please treat horse riders the way you would like to be treated by drivers. If you don't see a horse rider thank you for calling "Hi" and passing wide and slow they may not be able to if their horse is anxious or you may have missed their smile, wave or nod. But please be assured riders are grateful to anyone who shows consideration when passing in the same way cyclists are grateful to and thank drivers who show consideration.

SpritzingAperol · 16/12/2021 08:20

where IS all this horse poo anyway?

See to me the daft thing is we don't expect cyclists to be doing massive grins and waving and saying thank you for doing something that's in the Highway Code and you are meant to do anyway. Like saying thank you for not speeding past me an inch away Confused I get it's nice to say thank you but honestly sometimes when you're out for 3hrs and have 100 cars pass you, it's tiring!

Hahahaha! Lots of horses will not tolerate anything being attached to their backside. Some will, some can be trained, but watch a video of a lion taking down a zebra. See where they attack? Lots of horses have an innate instinct to be especially wary if things behind them

That fear only gets worse once they have been tailed too close by a car too many times, or chased by a dog ("he's only interested and being friendly" thee owner usually says as you try to calm a scared horse that is spinning to try to keep the dog in view). Both of which are depressingly common occurances.

XelaM · 16/12/2021 15:26

Good luck trying to get a nappy on a horse Grin

Toplowlight · 16/12/2021 16:07

A word of caution if you’re googling ‘horse nappy’ and seeing ten million results it’s because the word ‘nappy’ is commonly used to describe a reluctant horse who doesn’t willingly move forward, and not because horse nappies are a commonly used or available product…

It has been well documented that concrete, tarmac and hard surfaces are bad for horses joints due to the impact. Traditionally roads were not made of concrete and were more natural so were less harmful for horses wellbeing. If you choose to buy a horse it would be more beneficial for the horse to be located in an area that has access to dirt tracks.
Horse riders would seriously love to live and keep there horses in an area where they never have to use roads. Wouldn't that be great? In the UK it's not possible, riders have to work to keep their horses so we can't all line in the back if Llareggub. But do feel free to help us campaign for more bridleways.
Kendodd · 16/12/2021 17:11

The other thing I've learnt from this thread is pity for the horses. I'm sure they don't want to be ridden on the road (or ridden at all) with other road users going past. I've always hated horse racing, it just looks so cruel, reading this thread, just riding them doesn't sound much better. Sure it looks like fun for the human, especially galloping, I wonder how much the horse likes that weight on their back though.

NeedsCharging · 16/12/2021 17:21

If people didn't ride horses Ken what do you expect to happen to them all?
Humans domesticated horses thousands of years ago and they have been bread to ensure they are physically capable of carrying out certain roles.
A healthy well cared for horse wouldn't have a human on its back if it didn't want to.

I dont suppose cows want to be milked multiple times a day and pregnant every 5 months of their life but humans want milk.

I find it laughable that you will pass judgement on horse owners and the keeping of horses but you know bugger all about horses and haven't bothered to find out.

Kendodd · 16/12/2021 17:49

I expect there would be far fewer horses in the world.
You make a good point about food animals although I do think providing food for people is different to just providing fun for people.

XelaM · 16/12/2021 17:53

Horses NEED to be ridden! They need the exercise!

Again showing your ignorance.
Yes for most horse owners it is a hobby however horses are still used for "work" in many places which includes as therapy animals.

Dogs are domesticated for humans and we use them as pets, work animals and as hobbies ( think dog agility) there shit causes much more health issues than horses but I don't hear you calling for dogs to returned to the wild Hmm

@Kendodd

Are you winding people up? You don’t know about horses, so you don’t know the way a horse’s ears prick forward with delight when it sees it’s owner coming over with a bridle, or how much they enjoy galloping/being ridden/jumping - whatever that particular horse is into. It’s a bit like a pet dog; riding it is the equivalent of taking it for a walk. They enjoy it. It’s actually more special than walking a dog because of the particular bond of trust you have in each other when riding. They are naturally flight animals so you have to be kind/confident so they can learn not to be scared of things. But you know nothing about this and are making ignorant comments based on your…well, your ignorance on the topic 😆🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😄🐴

Also most horses would just plonk you back on the floor if they hated it!
"Goodbye human" Grin

Haha, indeed! Reminds me of the Normal Thelwell illustrations!

RosesAndHellebores · 16/12/2021 22:07

Just reading the op again, actually the title Grin

Horseriders shoukd pick up their poo.

Just wondering does the op mean horseriders should dismount to have a poo and then pick it up or does the op mean horseriding should dismount to pick up their horse's poo.

If the former, yes of course. If the latter, don't be so silly op.

StoneofDestiny · 16/12/2021 22:39

Can't say it's a thing I worry about - but I saw horses with 'bags' on them to catch the poo in Poland. Just looked on line and there are lots of models of horse diapers/nappy bags 😂. In some parts of the USA it's compulsory for horses to have them.

Horse riders should pick up their poo!!

Russelhobskettle · 16/12/2021 22:54

@Kendodd surprisingly horses can enjoy being ridden and going out. I wouldn't say they enjoy the way some people and some sports treat them... but my horse used to visibly brighten up when he saw me bring his tack over after grooming. When we were out he'd clearly be enjoying the scenery. When he got too poorly to be ridden we'd go out for walks together around our shorter hacking routes together.
Having said that - yes, riding on roads and lanes isn't much fun and drivers and other road users seem to be getting less considerate. Some really couldn't care less if their actions ended up in causing injury or even death to horse and rider. For that reason to have a horse somewhere with unlimited "off road" riding is the dream. Not easy to find though. We have to use bridleways and byways, sometimes permissive riding routes. We can't just go around the edge of a field, or along an interesting looking track, so options are more limited than they appear.
