Is Panettone the biggest waste of money

Every Christmas, stores have the most gorgeously packaged panettone, it feels impossible not to buy at least one. And the big ones don't come cheap. My gripe is that you open it and it's nothing but eggy, vanilla flavoured fruit bread in the shape of a cake. I've used it to make French toast and it's fine, but nothing you couldn't do with a simple fruit loaf from Tesco or M&S. Panettone - a rip-off or worth it?

It sounds like you've never had a really good one tbh. They're nothing like fruit loaf!

FabriqueBelgique · 13/12/2021 11:23

I keep seeing them and wondering who buys them, and what for?!

rifling · 13/12/2021 11:23

I agree - the best bit of panettone is the packaging! I live in Italy and in December so many people give you panettoni - and then if you are lucky you can pass it on to someone else. It's like a huge pass the parcel. Grin I only eat it toasted with butter and if you close your eyes, it tastes like hot cross buns. My (Italian) husband loves it though so I can only suppose that it's something you have to have grown up with as the nostalgia makes it taste better.

MrsColon · 13/12/2021 11:23

They're rubbish, I've never had a nice one

NuffSaidSam · 13/12/2021 11:24

Good panettone is delicious.

I don't think any of the supermarket ones are great tbh.

2TurtleDovesInARow · 13/12/2021 11:24

I always pass it on. I'm not keen!! YANBU.

EverNapping · 13/12/2021 11:25

A good panettone, this year Sainsbury's & the big tinned ones in Wilko, are to die for. I adore them. I want to walk into the store and sweep them into my basket. They also have a long shelf life in Wilko so you can keep them well into 2022.

ShirleyPhallus · 13/12/2021 11:25

I think it’s delicious and could eat one in one sitting

mynameiscalypso · 13/12/2021 11:26

I'm a heathen and I love the M&S triple chocolate one.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/12/2021 11:26

If you don't like it don't buy it. It's not impossible.

limitedperiodonly · 13/12/2021 11:26

There are nice ones - I'm not going further than that. But most of them are like chewing a bath sponge.

TheMooch · 13/12/2021 11:26

I like it but the packaging is often more beautiful.

womaninatightspot · 13/12/2021 11:26

I had chocolate panettone from Aldi and it was lush. Best panettone ever (and I've had many disappointing ones).

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 13/12/2021 11:27

I think it looks appealing due to its size and shape and it often comes in a jazzy tin. But as a foodstuff it’s decidedly meh.

I’d just use it in a bread and butter pudding.

User2638483 · 13/12/2021 11:27

The Lidl ones are lovely and not ££££

AmyDudley · 13/12/2021 11:28

The ones I've had have always been a bit dry. I do like the pretty tins though (I actually bought one for my DDIL a couple of years ago because I knew she'd love the tin it came in). My DD keeps on about a double chocolate one in M and S - it is £10-12 I think. But I had a look and it looked a bit sickly. So I'm not getting that. I prefer stollen.
I imagine panettone would make nice bread and butter pudding.

Helpstopthepain · 13/12/2021 11:28

I really want one now! Toasted and covered in a nice creamy butter.

Shedmistress · 13/12/2021 11:29

Pannetone is basically the only thing [apart from a bottle of Baileys and sprouts] that we buy in 'special' for Christmas. We aren't big on the occasion but all we need is these 3 and it's festive enough for us.

Pass the parcel! Agree, we get loads from Italian friends and business partners. I give them away but we still have leftovers. I've made bread and butter pudding with it but I don't really like that either and there's only so much of it you can stand.
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 13/12/2021 11:33

I don't buy it, it's very nice toasted with half a pound of butter if you don't mind putting on a stone over xmas.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 13/12/2021 11:33

I love it, my favourite Christmas thing

And I always buy an extra one to make bread and butter pudding on New Year’s Day - absolutely sensational

Capricopia · 13/12/2021 11:35

Only worth it for turning into a chocolate orange bread and butter pudding. Slather slices in marmalade, stack them in a casserole dish, slot chunks of dark chocolate between slices, cover is custard and bake. Absolutely delicious.

GADDay · 13/12/2021 11:36

Panettone bread & butter pud with brandy custard....

weebarra · 13/12/2021 11:36

Yes, DH always gets one from a work contractor and we make bread and butter pudding with it. Gorgeous!
