To think IACGMOOH is cruel?

Why is it OK to use animals for entertainment, why is it OK to pour different types of critters on top of others, why don't we care that they are sacrificed for our entertainment?
Why don't we care that animal parts are put to waste?
IABU - who gives a fuck if insects die, its TV gold
IANBU- it's tasteless to use living things for entertainment?

It's awful and I stopped watching years ago but makes me laugh that people are up in arms about the cruelty on this show but think abbetoirs and the dairy industry are ok because it's for 'consumption'. The cruelty in those places is horrific.

Comedycook · 14/12/2021 10:45

Putting the animals aside for a moment...I really dislike challenges where people look like they are hating it or feel scared. I find it genuinely baffling that anyone would enjoy watching other people in that state.

LindaEllen · 14/12/2021 10:45

YANBU. I don't understand why people campaign so heavily for the lives of certain animals in one breath, then sit down with a brew and watch thousands of animals die for their entertainment.

(Although I think the body parts they eat come from a butchers, if that makes it any better).

Seemslikeagoodidea · 14/12/2021 19:45

"I don't simply 'dislike' it - I save 'dislike' for shows like 'Holby City' and 'Tipping Point', and people who say 'wow' and enjoy Ant & Dec's 'daft jokes'. This show is unpleasantly cruel and sadistic and I have to question the mentality of anyone who enjoys it. That's not 'judgmental' (which btw means 'overly critical') that's utterly sound criticism. Looks like it's had its day, anyway, and will on the way out shortly. Good riddance."

@LetHimHaveIt One person's idea of 'sound criticism' can be another person's idea of being judgemental. I don't need a lecture on the meaning of particular words - this is a discussion forum, not dictionary corner.

I think the original trials where people ate live creatures were barbaric, which is why I stopped watching the shows for many years. However, since they stopped that type of trial I gave the series another chance, because I enjoy some aspects of the show. I am not very keen on insects, rats or snakes, so that's probably why I didn't give much thought to them being crowded together - I think it's harder to feel empathy for animals that lack fur and/or aren't cute. This series I have thought about these things more deeply and I agree with others that it's cruel to use insects/rats and snakes in this way. If there is a petition asking the producers to stop this cruelty I will sign it, but in any case I don't think I will watch any future series.

@EvilPea

There’s new evidence to suggest insects do feel pain etc.

But arrogant humans believe just because they aren’t made like us, they can’t.

I always suspected that insects could feel pain, and would never deliberately harm one for fun. However, that doesn't stop me killing flies or mosies if they come into my home - I try to usher them out of the window first, but if they don't take the hint then I swat them. They are a health hazard so if they invade my home I think getting rid of them is reasonable. Vegans probably take a dim view of this though.
LetHimHaveIt · 14/12/2021 19:59

'One person's idea of 'sound criticism' can be another person's idea of being judgemental. I don't need a lecture on the meaning of particular words - this is a discussion forum, not dictionary corner.'

Doubtless, then, you won't want to know that a lecture is usually 'a long serious speech, especially one given as a scolding or reprimand', rather than a single, throwaway sentence disagreeing with you . . . 🙄

Don't get shitty with me just because most people agreed that's it's a needlessly unpleasant programme fronted by two fairly infantile men.

Chloemol · 14/12/2021 20:02

It’s a crap programme full of has beens and compared by two twats well past their sell by date

Hate it, always have

Seemslikeagoodidea · 14/12/2021 20:10

@LetHimHaveIt I don't mind people agreeing with you, I just think there's no need to have such a harsh attitude towards people who don't agree with every word you say. This thread asks people whether they think the trials are cruel to the creatures used, and I have agreed that they are, but that doesn't mean that I hate everything about the show.

Christmasbutmakeitspooky · 14/12/2021 21:50

@TooManyAnimals94 I felt like exactly the same about that last snake trial. I was thinking about the snakes being all stressed out and worried. I really wanted them to stop pouring them in, it was so cruel.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 14/12/2021 22:03

@Christmasbutmakeitspooky I didn't see that, but really, they poured snakes in? AngrySad

Barbaric wankshafts.

OhdearOhdearOhdearIndeed · 14/12/2021 22:45

I've never understood the appeal of the bushtucker trials with the insects and gunge. You can have entertaining challenges that really test people without them being cruel and gross.

We used to be all transfixed on the crystal maze years ago and similar sorts of challenges could work (I'm sure the people who watch this programme would enjoy the celebs fucking them up). Even just really stupid shit like taskmaster would be funny. It's not necessary anymore.

I don’t think abattoirs or the dairy industry are ok either. I’m a vegetarian (would love to go vegan but there are lots of reasons why I can’t at the moment) and want cruelty to animals in any form to stop immediately.
Christmasbutmakeitspooky · 15/12/2021 09:15

@TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth pretty much yeah, there were holes in the side of the box the contestant was lying in, and snakes just kept pouring out of them, all on top of each other. Stressed me out just watching it.

SocialConnection · 15/12/2021 11:54

It's cruelty and I don't watch.

I've seen some of the 70s All Creatures Great and Small series and I've been surprised at how much the actors did to animals for entertainment.

Seemslikeagoodidea · 15/12/2021 20:24

OhdearOhdearOhdearIndeed:

@OhdearOhdearOhdearIndeed Exactly. Here's hoping the show's producers realise this too.

LittleDidSheKnow · 15/12/2021 20:33

We'll, they haven't realised in 20 years so it's pretty doubtful! It'll only be through complaints, legal action or boycotting that they'll change things. They only care about money and ratings.

Lizzy1980 · 15/12/2021 20:43

@PilesEdgeworth

Of course it’s cruel. The RSPCA have previously condemned it. It’s astounding to me how many people still tune in but clearly this sort of abuse has its fanbase.
