Why is it OK to use animals for entertainment, why is it OK to pour different types of critters on top of others, why don't we care that they are sacrificed for our entertainment?
Why don't we care that animal parts are put to waste?
IABU - who gives a fuck if insects die, its TV gold
IANBU- it's tasteless to use living things for entertainment?

Shocking that it’s acceptable.

Poor snakes.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 12/12/2021 22:07

People have been saying this for how ever many years it's been on for, is it 15 years? Have you never seen it before OP?

I'm sure there are loads of groups you could find campaigning against it.

MynameisWa · 12/12/2021 22:17

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair why are you phrasing it like that.

The OP wants to talk about it on MN now.

Why is that a problem?

dropitlikeitsloth · 12/12/2021 22:19

@Elzbells

Yes, the helmet thing I thought was really cruel. All those insects poured on top of each other and then tipped on the floor to probably be swept up and incinerated. The poor crickets trying to jump out of the hole.

I really don't find this entertaining and I think using any animal in this way should be banned.

There were loads of dead ones on the floor when they opened it. They probably suffocated. 😢
Tessellation · 12/12/2021 22:22

I completely agree - all in the name of entertainment. Makes me appalled and sad all at the same time. Humans really are just awful, aren't we.

woodhill · 12/12/2021 22:27

Yes it's horrible a d that helmet trial was awful for Danny and the creatures

No I haven't, but it's not a thing from the past, it is on prime time TV, now, today, in 2021.

@HotPenguin

Does anyone remember when Clive James had a show where he showed clips of Japanese game shows doing exactly this sort of thing? There was a bit of a racist undercurrent to it, it was all us laughing at them for being weird/uncivilised. Now we're doing even worse things.
I was saying exactly the same to my DH this evening. I think in years to come people will wonder what on earth were we thinking of to class this as ‘light entertainment’
itwasntaparty · 12/12/2021 22:34

It's been an issue since it started. In and they said the critters were able to scuttle off and survive. Not so much in wales.

Pickles89 · 12/12/2021 22:35

Fucking disgusting and outdated. It's 2021 for Gods sake.

MynameisWa · 12/12/2021 22:36

@HotPenguin yes! It was like the West looking down on the East ads though we’d never stoop to such undignified lows.

Now look at us.

SoSoTiredToday · 12/12/2021 22:38

It's ridiculous and I can't believe in 2021 this is actually allowed to happen. 🤷

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 12/12/2021 22:41

I have always hated that programme and refuse to watch it. So horrendously cruel.

lucascriesalot · 12/12/2021 22:42

Insects have no feelings, either physically or emotionally.

How many years ago did Carrie Bradshaw say "I stopped watching television when people started putting leeches in their pants"?!

I am amazed it's still on.

Having never looked into this before, I find that mad! How do they know this for sure?
stillvicarinatutu · 12/12/2021 22:44

What bothers me more is the rats etc . They can't be let loose . They're bred for this so they aren't wild . What happens to them ?

SSOYS · 12/12/2021 22:44

It’s appalling and I don’t watch it for that reason, among others. It can’t be that hard to devise trials which don’t involve animal cruelty, surely?

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 12/12/2021 22:45

Just googled it and found www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/insects-can-experience-chronic-pain-study-finds-180972656/

stillvicarinatutu · 12/12/2021 22:45

I complained to itv . Fobbed off . Never watched it since

Elzbells · 12/12/2021 22:47

@itwasntaparty

Yes exactly. In Oz they can scuttle off and have half a chance.

No way on earth they are letting live cockroaches "scuttle off" into a castle which is also used as a wedding venue.

anne2650 · 12/12/2021 22:52

I hate it. I can't understand why people find it entertaining.

tearinghairout · 12/12/2021 22:59

I also wrote to them years ago and was fobbed off with some "highest standards of welfare crap". It's awful. Degrading. I especially hate the way they treated little crocs and lizards back when I used to watch it. One contestant was startled by a lizard and threw it on the floor. I stopped watching years ago after seeing fish ending up on the floor. The games where they had eg. white water rafting were much more entertaining. Keep writing to OFCOM, people. Now that it's in the UK we have more chance of getting the cruelty stopped.

The only time I ever sat to watch this pile of shit I was horrified to see tonnes of frightened rats in an enclosed space with a panicking celeb in imminent danger of being trampled on. As someone who has kept pet rats I know they have feelings, not dissimilar to dogs in fact, so I was appalled. That programme IS cruel and am absolute pile of shit to boot, dumbed down tv - I don't know how people can watch it and be okay with the cruelty to living creatures. In this day and age too.
