Failed 6th driving test. Can't bring myself to book test 7

bellaella18 · 11/12/2021 15:03

Just failed my 6th driving test this morning. I'm absolutely gutted. I drove pretty well, completed the parking manœuvre correctly. However, when we got to the motorway, traffic was pretty slow and the examiner failed me for not having the appropriate distance from the car ahead ( he said I was too close, about a car's length instead of 2).

I feel embarrassed that I've let myself and family down again. I'm finding it so difficult to book another test.

Any help and support would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats op!
My Dh failed the exact same amount of times as you, passed on lucky 7. It was all anxiety! He's now one of the best drivers I know!
Happy new year to you op! What a fab start for you x

Keep going OP! When you do pass you will soon stop caring how many tests it took. It sounds like you are really close.

You could change instructors - a new one might have some different ideas on managing test nerves.

I took a shitload of rescue remedy before the test I passed.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 07/01/2022 14:56

Xpost. Congrats OP!!!!

Definitely keep going!!! I passed in my 7th or 8th test.

I was so bloody nervous on ever test my mind went blank and I couldn’t concentrate.

I’ve been driving 10 years now and never had an accident. I was so much more relaxed one I could drive in the car on my own.

RGinaPhalange · 07/01/2022 15:33

Oh I’ve just seen that you passed!!! Congratulations!!!! Amazing news xx

Luhou · 07/01/2022 16:05

Took me 6 times, I use to just crumbe the moment the test started. Now been driving 6years without any issues. I remember being distraught after each fail, just book it again and again until you pass!

CounsellorTroi · 07/01/2022 16:19

Took me 5 goes. Don’t give up,you will pass when you are ready. Are you sure you’ve got the right sort of instructor for you?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/01/2022 16:47

I passed on the 7th attempt OP! According to the statistics, where I was living at the time was the third hardest place to pass in the country - plus I panic in exams at the best of times. I doesn't necessarily mean you aren't a decent driver, just that if you are anything like me, you'll unfortunately have to keep taking the test until you can stop being quite so nervous about it.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/01/2022 16:49

Ah, missed that you passed - 7th time lucky like me, congrats!

Iblinkedandiamold · 07/01/2022 18:41

Congratulations OP. Wonderful feeling isn't it. Safe and happy motoring.

@bellaella18

I would like to let you all know that I sat my test today in a different test centre and PASSED with 4 minors! I can't believe it! But I am so glad, I went ahead and booked the test. Thank you all so much for your support Smile Flowers
Congratulations. Driving tests are definitely sonething where perseverance pays off.

I passed on the 7th go OP, book it in absolute secrecy though, only tell your instructor. I did that, it helped that nobody knew, it took the pressure off. Also helped that I went automatic after falling 4 times in manual, relearned, and in reality I passed 3rd time in auto (manual was pointless)
Good luck, you will do it.

Crucible · 08/01/2022 07:23

Fab op!

Longdistance · 08/01/2022 07:30

I can’t believe the amount of people saying give up?!
I passed on my 7th test 25 years ago and I’m a bloody great driver. The first instructor I had was useless. I had 5 tests with him. I then had a break for a year or so as I became very anxious with the tests.
I can categorically tell you I have never had a speeding ticket or caused an accident and am a very confident driver. In fact, I’m a better driver than my dh who passed first time. He’s impatient, has had lots of points/fines (the fines were mainly when we lived in Oz) and has had a few prangs. He’s the one not cut out for driving. He wants a motorcycle, no fucking chance!

@bellaella18 Many congratulations! Flowers

Are you able to book a few lessons right before a test? If you're really wanting to pass then definitely re-book... it took my sister absolutely ages, but she doesn't really like to drive. I failed my first test for driving way over the speed limit as i didn't see the sign. So failed in the first 5 minutes but had to do the whole test. Thought i'd done brilliantly too. Only to be told i failed. Do you love driving? Because if you don't you'll forever be nervous on the roads? Or not end up using your license really. I love driving and just got my truck license took a ton of lessons. Needed to feel i was ready and had a chance at passing. Do you feel ready? But i agree the pressure setting often makes you make mistakes you'd never usually make... GoodLuck!!!!! 🍀🍀

Prescottdanni123 · 08/01/2022 07:47

Yay! Congrats, OP!

Youngstreet · 08/01/2022 07:50

Well done OP.
My dd took 6 tests before she passed.
She’s a good driver and you are too.

LavenderAskew · 08/01/2022 08:17

Well done OP

Don't get the comments about not being allowed to drive if you've failed x amount of times. Surely even if you pass on your 21st attempt you pass because you've reached the standard required to drive?

Test nerves won't affect driving once the test is done.

I think if a first time passer (from years ago) attempted a test today they'd be in for a shock.

I would never class my self as an "amazing" or "brilliant" (or whatever postersvas described themselves as) driver. It's not a good thing to think, you need to keep reminding yourself you can still improve and learn.

OP never forget you once were a learner and every now and again imagine you're being tested so you don't let minor faults become bad habits.

Latecomer131 · 13/01/2022 17:43

Congrats on passing, OP. Perseverance pays off!
