Neighbour using my accounts to shop

csam · 10/12/2021 21:23

So my neighbour (and friend) is currently isolating with their family due to Covid.
Their laptop was at work so I offered them the use of my old one.

I forgot that my passwords auto filled and for the last few days my friend has been happily using my Amazon / M&S accounts to complete multiple on line orders.

They have added own payment card and their address.

Whilst not bothered by the home shopping delivery (I said this was fine to do), it now appears all Xmas shopping is being completed via my accounts Hmm

AIBU to be a bit miffed at this?

OP posts:

I'm friends with my neighbours but I wouldn't be lending my laptop for them to shop but if you had wanted her to use it you should have set up a separate profile so she couldn't access any of your stuff, like a shared computer at work.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 11/12/2021 06:11

Bonkers. Maybe they could purchase a bleeding laptop Hmm

User378436 · 11/12/2021 06:14

It's strange they have no phone to shop on, they are obviously using technology to be doing online shopping

GoodPrincessWenceslas · 11/12/2021 06:14

Offer to fetch her laptop for her?

EdgeOfTheSky · 11/12/2021 06:16
@csam I worked in a bank. They could use your cards and you would have NO recourse. Literally none.

My kids have my CC on their Apple Pay but I have instant notifications. So I do trust my kids (more or less) but not with all the private info on my laptop.

You have given them your wallet, your emails, your private correspondence. It's pretty extraordinary behaviour. They could literally dismantle your life if they felt so inclined.
Or just by accident.

leafygarden42 · 11/12/2021 06:22

@csam

I know this is going against what everyone else is saying, but if I knew my neighbour well enough to lend them a laptop I would be happy for them to make the most of the free postage with Amazon Prime - it really wouldn't bother me at all.

I'm presuming you trust them not be copying all your credit/debit card details etc.!

TillyTopper · 11/12/2021 06:33

That's so strange! Do you think they are not IT savvy enough to notice? But at least they have changed the address/credit card. I'd just change my key passwords and let them figure it out (I know some people just wouldn't realise). But if they do realise then it's very cheeky!

Newforestdonkey · 11/12/2021 06:41

It doesn’t make sense. If you add a new address on Amazon prime you get a text on your mobile asking you to confirm the new added address. You either allowed your neighbours to get the deliveries at their addresses or this isn’t happening.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/12/2021 06:41

My first thought was how can anyone be so stupid to give their neighbours the passwords!

Toddlerteaplease · 11/12/2021 06:43

@Ubiquery

You leant someone your laptop?? That’d feel like lending someone my diary, cash card, tv and social media all rolled in to one.
This!
Padton · 11/12/2021 06:54

I presume they can also log onto Mumsnet as you and add their own thoughts to this post…?

50ShadesOfCatholic · 11/12/2021 06:56

I know it's not a very interesting or exciting answer but from what you say OP it sounds fine. She's a neighbour, a friend, she's dealing with a stressful situation and she has in all likelihood not realised she is using your account. Probably just clicked amazon and continued on her merry way. Main thing is that she's plugged in her own payment method!

If you now change your passwords you can feel more at ease.

And if there's any bother, you know where she lives!

Posters calling you stupid and so on are just being gratuitously rude, it's a thing here. Tragic really.

Motnight · 11/12/2021 06:57

This!! Let's hope you haven't ever posted anything personal on here Op!
ClaudiaJ1 · 11/12/2021 07:11

YANBU It's very rude and cheeky of them. And very weird. If they can add their card to your account, why can't they create an account of their own? I would definitely tell them you find it quite 'cheeky and forward' of them using your account and asked why they couldn't ask you if they could do this? I understand they're not charging it to your account, but still, you'd think they'd actually want to use their own account. I would definitely change the password and tell them exactly why.

It also makes me think what other accounts/programs/websites do you have on your laptop with autofill passwords (not judging you because my laptop and desktop have the same, I'd be stuffed if someone got my laptop!)? Internet banking? Personal email account? Facebook account with PMs?

ClaudiaJ1 · 11/12/2021 07:12

Oh yes, Mumsnet website on your laptop that they can log in to?

Lasair · 11/12/2021 07:14

Why on earth would someone be “furious” they only way I’d be furious is if they used your payment card! They paid themselves it’s really a non issue. Chill out a bit.

ClaudiaJ1 · 11/12/2021 07:16

@csam Wow...you don't mince your words.
This person isn't a stranger to me. They can't spend my actual money... is just using my accounts to order for themselves

It's not just the account though is it? It's about privacy. As I said, what about Facebook page they can access? Internet banking? Other websites/forums you contributed to while using the laptop that autofill your details?

It's far, FAR more than just 'Amazon account'. Any site you've been on with your laptop that autofills your details, they can access. Including Mumsnet.

ANY and EVERY website you've visited on your laptop that has autofill details, gives them access.

User378436 · 11/12/2021 07:19

Isn't it part of the banking rules that others shouldn't be able to access your accounts, my banking apps ask if anyone else has Face ID access to my phone and iPad, surely autofilled passwords on a laptop are the same

oohmamama · 11/12/2021 07:19

Blimey! The responses on here are crazy!!

Don’t lend a laptop to a neighbour, she’ll steal all
Your money and your identity!Xmas Biscuit

Check your boundaries!!Hmm

The guff spouted by the self righteous on here is insane.

Just ask for it back and next time (if there is one) ask her to buy on her own account.

The rest of you - go round to your neighbour and give them a hug.

ZenNudist · 11/12/2021 07:21

Well more fool you jot to have wiped your laptop before giving it. I trust my neighbour too but wouldn't want her to use my amazon account. What is she "forgot" to switch credit cards.

Plentyofcod · 11/12/2021 07:55

I hope you're sure that they aren't using your money. Considering that many retailers store card details. You need to get your act together quickly today.

Yes!! QUICKLY!!! Make sure your trusted neighbour hasn’t spent all your money in M&S and Amazon. Wink
CottonSock · 11/12/2021 08:13

Maybe they thought you would be annoyed to find yourself logged out of every account. Maybe they didn't notice. Probably worth logging out from amazon now though.

MuthaFunka61 · 11/12/2021 08:37

I'm not quite sure why you're miffed.

You state you don't mind your neighbour using your delivery options so that only leaves your point that she's doing all her Christmas shopping via your account.

If I'm reading this correctly you intended that it be used only for food shopping and not personal shopping,is this correct?

If so, you needed to be clear at the outset and now need to let it go.

No-one has the ability to mind read.

itwasntaparty · 11/12/2021 08:44

This is so odd. Why would you even think it's acceptable?
