Neighbour using my accounts to shop

csam · 10/12/2021 21:23

So my neighbour (and friend) is currently isolating with their family due to Covid.
Their laptop was at work so I offered them the use of my old one.

I forgot that my passwords auto filled and for the last few days my friend has been happily using my Amazon / M&S accounts to complete multiple on line orders.

They have added own payment card and their address.

Whilst not bothered by the home shopping delivery (I said this was fine to do), it now appears all Xmas shopping is being completed via my accounts Hmm

AIBU to be a bit miffed at this?

@Thelnebriati

Stop and think about this; they have ordered using your account but their credit card, where are the items being delivered to?

Don't accept the deliveries at your address.

If you are logged into your Amazon account and you try to get an item sent to a new address, it asks for your password for security. So the neighbour must be getting the items delivered to an existing address on the Ops Amazon account.
me4real · 11/12/2021 00:08

I thought you meant they were using your card info to pay for stuff at first.

They are paying for the items. But they should've asked.

Shitandhills · 11/12/2021 00:15

Jesus, some properly hysterical replies on here! They are friends and neighbours and she hasn't spent any of OP's money, I really don't get why it's a problem?? OP if it's such a big deal for your friend to temporarily make use of your prime then I would say that to them, but to be honest I think that would make you appear pretty mean as it doesn't cost you anything extra for them to use it! I think the more unusual thing is that she won't be able to manage any of her orders once she's given the laptop back e.g. if they don't turn up, she needs to return etc This makes me think that maybe she doesn't actually realise she's buying these through your account, she might just assume she's on the website and some of your details have autofilled, as they often do if you've used a site before.

JellyfishandShells · 11/12/2021 00:16

I had a relative staying and lent her my laptop - but only after I , as administrator, set up a separate guest account. Much cleaner all round.

The laptop is rubbish for Zoom, so I use my husbands spare travel one for that. -I set up a separate account on that one after he gave me the admin password - just a neater solution all round.

Shitandhills · 11/12/2021 00:17

Hold on, just reread the original post:

Whilst not bothered by the home shopping delivery (I said this was fine to do)

What exactly do you mean here? As in you said it was fine for her to use your accounts, but you're just annoyed she's putting so many orders through them?

Uninterested · 11/12/2021 00:21

Too many questions. 😅

Presumably the Neighbour will soon be posting on this thread as the OP ….

Mydogmylife · 11/12/2021 00:27

@SW1amp

Just checked my accounts and even if I choose the ‘use saved card’ option, I still have to put in the 3 digit security code And only the last 4 digits of the saved card show

So the neighbour wouldn’t be able to use OPs card details for the orders, nor can she steal OPs card details

Late to the party , but actually no you don't on Amazon
me4real · 11/12/2021 00:33

@Mydogmylife The neighbour isn't using OP's card, they added their own.

Mydogmylife · 11/12/2021 00:36
@Mydogmylife The neighbour isn't using OP's card, they added their own.
No, but if they wanted to they could easily switch to op's account and use that -no further security required

Bigchicken · 11/12/2021 00:37

I would suggest you cancel their orders and get the laptop back ASAP. You don't owe them any explanation, they are well out of order using your accounts. They are obviously perfectly computer literate and capable of using their own accounts. This is totally bizarre.

PickAChew · 11/12/2021 00:37

If you must do this again, lock your account and set up a guest account.

mediumbrownmug · 11/12/2021 00:58

Personally, I’m not close enough friends with anyone to give them access to my bank accounts, and if all your passwords are saved to auto fill that’s pretty much what you’ve done.

Regardless, you’ve put your neighbor in the unenviable position of being at least partially responsible for your online security for the next couple of weeks. You may trust them, but you’ll also have to trust all their kids, the email links and downloads they all might click on, their entire approach to online security, etc. Your bank (and other online services) would be very nervous about it if they knew.

Yes, it's not just about not having the CVC code for your credit cards. It's all your personal details, your security questions saved onto the account. if your email was logged in to they could reset all your passwords. Also if it's logged in as pp said above and they click on something wrong your details could be stolen.

The blase approach to security of some pp makes me see why criminals make so much money!

Flavabobble · 11/12/2021 01:21

I've yet to have a laptop where I don't have to log into my profile - and I'm the only one using it. Does that make me weird?

The only person with any access to any of my accounts is my eldest with secondary access to prime. I can't conceive of a situation where I'd leave open access to my cash or any online accounts.

Magspy · 11/12/2021 01:22

Aren't the notifications on order status, delivery, etc. going to your email and not hers? I'd just tell her you received some confirmations for items you hadn't bought and were alarmed, then realised from the name/address that they were her orders. Ask her what's going on. (By the way, I can update a lot on my Amazon account with no password. and when it does ask me to verify the sign-on for security, it still autofills the username and password.)

gumball37 · 11/12/2021 01:54

@nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut

I'd do my own shopping on their payment card. That'd soon put a stop to it.
This was going to be my answer haha

At last some sanity! I agree with every word.
Wallywobbles · 11/12/2021 04:44

In our security training at the bank we were told to remove our cvc from our cards. As no one but you ever needs to use it.

What a good (and yet obvious although I never thought of it!) idea.
AgentJohnson · 11/12/2021 05:28

I despair I really do. Change your passwords immediately and cancel the orders. Your neighbour is a cf and you are incredibly naive.

Well you only have yourself to blame and if you didn’t want to lend them a laptop with the implications of them possibly using any accounts then you shouldn’t have done it.but also they should have had the good enough manners to not use your account or use your laptops stored passwords and not piggy back on your good will and breach your data and privacy. Be smarter than that. It’s not even something worthy of posting
heelforheelandtoefortoe · 11/12/2021 05:46

What a bloody stupid thing to do

And I'm talking about you, not her

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 11/12/2021 05:54

So she can access your other accounts too like emails? And knows all your banking details?
I would be very seriously worried if I were you. You have no idea who else she might have given information to either including random online vendors other than those you mentioned.
