Neighbour using my accounts to shop

csam · 10/12/2021 21:23

So my neighbour (and friend) is currently isolating with their family due to Covid.
Their laptop was at work so I offered them the use of my old one.

I forgot that my passwords auto filled and for the last few days my friend has been happily using my Amazon / M&S accounts to complete multiple on line orders.

They have added own payment card and their address.

Whilst not bothered by the home shopping delivery (I said this was fine to do), it now appears all Xmas shopping is being completed via my accounts Hmm

AIBU to be a bit miffed at this?

  1. Change all your passwords.
  1. Retrieve laptop.
Wallywobbles · 10/12/2021 22:03

@csam I worked in a bank. They could use your cards and you would have NO recourse. Literally none.

My kids have my CC on their Apple Pay but I have instant notifications. So I do trust my kids (more or less) but not with all the private info on my laptop.

You have given them your wallet, your emails, your private correspondence. It's pretty extraordinary behaviour. They could literally dismantle your life if they felt so inclined.

DaisyNGO · 10/12/2021 22:04

@Ubiquery

You leant someone your laptop?? That’d feel like lending someone my diary, cash card, tv and social media all rolled in to one.
Same here
CovidMakesThingsHarder · 10/12/2021 22:07

Fuck no. I’d ask for the computer back temporarily as you need it for something, leave it sat in the sun for an hour and wipe down then bring in, log out of EVERYTHING and then give it back. Takes 2mins to set up accounts for these places.

Fomofo · 10/12/2021 22:08

It's an invasion of your privacy

grapewine · 10/12/2021 22:12

@Wallywobbles

I'd wipe my lap top before I lent it to my kids. Why the fuck is your sense of security so poor?
It's pretty shocking. No way in hell would I let anyone use my laptop.
Mummyoflittledragon · 10/12/2021 22:26

Are you sure they have always used their cards for starters? This is outrageous!

KaycePollard · 10/12/2021 22:27

What goes through some people's minds????

I'd find it hard to stay friends with someone who did this.

Popopopo · 10/12/2021 22:27

You dont need a laptop to do online shopping...do they not have smartphones?

LosingTheWill2 · 10/12/2021 22:29

Oh dear, I can understand how this would happen. I wouldn’t think twice about loaning a close friend my laptop and it never occurs to me that anyone using my devices can access my Facebook/Amazon etc. (I always forget to log out before my kids use our shared laptop and it’s only a matter of time before they figure out that they have free reign to order what they want off Amazon!)

However, I’m sure that if I used my friend’s device, I would log onto my own account to do my shopping. I would be very 🤨 if anyone used my accounts, even if they used their own cards to pay for their purchases. What’s to stop you using their cards to pay for your purchases now that they are linked to your accounts?
Also, they now have access to your passwords etc. that they could now use to access your accounts on other devices (I would trust my friends not to do this, but it’s something to think about).

I think, personally, I would be a bit of a wimp, and just change all of my passwords so they would have to log onto their own accounts. If they asked me why they (suddenly) use my accounts, I would feign ignorance and say that I had some email notification about unusual activity on my accounts so changed all of my passwords

whoopy1 · 10/12/2021 22:34

YABU to only be a BIT miffed. If you have any sense at all stop this happening now! You say they can’t spend your “actual money.” As someone else has asked, do you not have cards saved to any of these accounts? If your passwords auto fill you have no idea what they could do with this information. You maybe trust them, but if anything happens to any of your accounts you will have NO comeback at all, as you have literally given them your passwords!

rosiebl · 10/12/2021 22:34

She's paying for her own stuff and making the use of your prime. No additional cost to you. She is isolating. Maybe next day delivery is needed. Maybe she doesn't get paid when she's isolating.
Anyways. In the grand scheme of life, I just couldn't get het up about this. Just ask her if she knows she's using your account, tell her that doing any returns might be a problem so she might prefer to use her own account and move on to bigger problems.

Haffiana · 10/12/2021 22:35

The fact that you posted "AIBU to be a bit miffed at this?" can only mean that you are 12 years old. Later you will learn to be an adult. For now, crack on being a bit miffed.

Duchess379 · 10/12/2021 22:37

My dad did this with my old laptop. I forgot to log out of Amazon & eBay & he was buying stuff which was pinging up on my phone! I thought my account had been hacked until I realised what address they were going to. And dad never queried why it took payment but didn't ask for his card details 😆🤦🏼‍♀️

expat101 · 10/12/2021 22:38

Does no one else in their family who they are isolating with, own a device? Seems odd.

Get your laptop back and don't lend it out again unless its a spare that you have wiped your personal apps and accounts from.

NMC2022 · 10/12/2021 22:40

Definitely change every single password! The only thing I've ever done is let my friend borrow my online supermarket account as she couldn't get a slot, had covid and I had priority. I wiped all my payment details before she logged in and changed the password after and she deleted her card details too
I use LastPass for passwords to make it more secure

flashy44 · 10/12/2021 22:42

Gosh, they may have gone into ALL your auto saved password accounts and a good nosey at everything.I have passwords saved on all my accounts too as i have a bad memory at remembering passwords, there is no way i would lend my laptop to ANYONE,Get it back asap.

Silvershroud · 10/12/2021 22:42

It's not really a security issue is it? They are using their own credit card details. I let people in work use my Prime account to get next day delivery, I just ask them to tranfer the purchase price into my bank account. I have no problem with that.

SW1amp · 10/12/2021 22:44

Just checked my accounts and even if I choose the ‘use saved card’ option, I still have to put in the 3 digit security code
And only the last 4 digits of the saved card show

So the neighbour wouldn’t be able to use OPs card details for the orders, nor can she steal OPs card details

Whatamesssss · 10/12/2021 23:01

You need to change your passwords and more importantly, click the log out of everywhere else option

CovidMakesThingsHarder · 10/12/2021 23:03

@SW1amp not on Amazon you don’t, just click buy and that’s it, not confirming,
@Silvershroud I buy things for a friend to ge the next day delivery but she sends me a link and payment and I order from my account, she doesn’t get my account details.

PipeOfPringles · 10/12/2021 23:04

If they haven't already changed your passwords and locked you out...

godmum56 · 10/12/2021 23:04

@csam

A mixed bag of replies.

I haven't said anything yet as it's only been today that there's been a flurry of orders made. Guessing the cabin fever is getting to them!

I'm going to change passwords and advise they use / create their own accounts if they want to continue using. Not sure they have Amazon so I suspect making the most of my free prime delivery!

I think you can share prime delivery with them if you are feeling kind
billy1966 · 10/12/2021 23:39

OP,
An absolute CF and I completely agree with @Wallywobbles.

You need to look hard at YOUR boundaries that you would give your laptop to the calibre of someone who would do THAT.

This is not normal behaviour.

It is the behaviour of rude, disrespectful CF's.

And you don't seem to get that.

I 100% agree with @Wally

Change those passwords and have a hard look at your boundaries and your friend.

Protect yourself. Flowers

Mamanyt · 10/12/2021 23:54

Well, there's this...her payment method is now saved to your accounts. I'd tell her that you know she did not intend to log into your personal accounts, and that for HER safety, you are deleting her financial records from your computer. That makes you the good guy in it all.
