to think William and Kate's Christmascard this year was badly judged?

So not only has William been hectoring us about climate change and sustainable travel, but there's been a pandemic which has been a pandemic which for many people has been financially devastating, and for most of us a holiday seems a distant pipe dream. So this year of all years they have chosen a photo of themselves all looking tanned and relaxed on a (presumably free) holiday. Just feels a tad ill judged?
@astoundedgoat

Are family holidays not 'jaunts'. It wasnt an official trip. William had already done that.

Personally I'd be quite happy if the Royal Family slipped quietly into oblivion. But I do find it irritating how some of them get criticism whatever they do.
Many families went on holidays this year, I went on 3 in the UK. They are not exceptional in that.
I am very much anti-monarchy, but I think that if they want to remain in their roles, they don't really get to have private lives that they then display to us in their public capacity.

100% have a private family holiday in Jordan. Jaunt was a bitchy word for me to use - I don't begrudge them time away from royal duties.

But their "official" Christmas photograph should be used to highlight postive and friendly relationship with one of the many countries and communities who live under the crown. Which can of course be England! But if it's going to be somewhere exotic, there were better choices available.

And on a year when many people cannot travel at all, maybe home would have been better anyway.

@FreedomFaith

It's not exactly Christmassy either is it? It's fairly boring to be honest. I'd be disappointed if I received that kind of card for Christmas.
I'd love it. I really like Christmas cards with pictures of perfect families on them, because it makes me feel all warm and smiley inside. All it needs is a round robin telling the lucky recipients that the children are genii, along with being musical, sporting and drama prodigies.
HandlebarLadyTash · 10/12/2021 20:55

I think they are just trying to do their job & this is the image that was chosen out of the 10 or so that were contenders for xmas 2021 christmas release.

DoctorSnortles · 10/12/2021 20:55

I like it. They look happy. I like seeing happy people.

Splayed bare legs whilst sitting atop a gold space hopper.

This will not do.

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches This has tickled me way more than it should haveBlush A fucking gold space hopper🤣🤣
julieca · 10/12/2021 20:56

@PriamFarrl I have been to Jordan. No a photo in Jordan and in this case Petra is not Christmassy. Petra was created by an ancient peoples who weren't even Christian. So it has NOTHING to do with Christmas.
I wouldn't even mind that if it was a nice photo, but it really isn't. Incredibly unnatural and posed looking and that golden ball is strange.
Charles and Camillas card is 100% better.

Wbfa · 10/12/2021 20:56

Absolutely 100% agree. I actually liked them but this was in poor taste. It’s been 3 years since I have seen my family. My parents haven't seen their first grandchild due to travel restrictions. What makes their children or family more special than anyone elses?

Lunde · 10/12/2021 20:57

Didn't Kate live there for several years as a child when her dad was a pilot?Perhaps she wanted to share her experience with her kids

Blinkingbatshit · 10/12/2021 20:57

Gosh, some of the comments on this thread are vile….probably coming from the #bekind brigade (who are usually anything but…).

Nancydrawn · 10/12/2021 20:57

@Roussette

But it's not like they're laying around on the beach in the Maldives! It is, if anything, too literally Christmassy

But for just about all the population they just won't get that!

That is 100000% fair.
MajorCarolDanvers · 10/12/2021 20:58

I really don't see what the problem is

julieca · 10/12/2021 20:58

@DoctorSnortles they don't look happy. It looks like a very posed photo. The kind where the photographer spends so long posing everyone, that people just get fed up and bored.

ShirleyPhallus · 10/12/2021 21:00

@CathyorClaire I just googled and oh Lordy, I see exactly what you mean! Shock

julieca · 10/12/2021 21:01

Petra was created by the Nabateans - where it looks like the photo was taken. Zero to do with Christianity. If it was on the banks of the river Jordan, then you could argue that more easily. Even better if it was in Bethlehem, rather than over 150km away.

speakout · 10/12/2021 21:01

Totally gross!

Were your family in Jordan then?
givethatbabyaname · 10/12/2021 21:01

It’s such a weird photo.

They’re sitting so far apart from each other, but artificially ensuring they’re touching each other in a display of togetherness, except for the youngest child who’s on his tod at the front.

Kate is all hair and teeth.

Don’t need to see William’s legs.

They’re in shorts and dresses, on a Christmas card, in a country that they’re not the royal family of and where it’s cold at Christmas in the country that they are the royal family of. Are they the British RF, or a random rich family?

The adults’ smiles look genuine, suggesting they’re genuinely enjoying whatever antics the photographer is up to to get the children to sit still, smile and look at the camera. That’s weird enough, but even more so given you can see from Charlotte’s face that it’s nonsense.

Just, so odd. The Americans do this kind of thing. It’s weirdly un-British.

Roussette · 10/12/2021 21:02

@astoundedgoat

You've nailed it there! Far more than I could

gojoroyco · 10/12/2021 21:03

@CheesyFootballsAreEvil

Just seems a weird choice. Not very christmassy.
Jesus came from the Middle East... sooo
gojoroyco · 10/12/2021 21:05
@PriamFarrl Jordan is where Bethlehem is located...
No it's not.

julieca · 10/12/2021 21:05

@gojoroyco yes 155km away.

julieca · 10/12/2021 21:06

@PriamFarrl no not a stones throw. About 155km away.
