to think William and Kate's Christmascard this year was badly judged?

So not only has William been hectoring us about climate change and sustainable travel, but there's been a pandemic which has been a pandemic which for many people has been financially devastating, and for most of us a holiday seems a distant pipe dream. So this year of all years they have chosen a photo of themselves all looking tanned and relaxed on a (presumably free) holiday. Just feels a tad ill judged?

All the younger royals are no different from 'celebrities' nowadays. Rightly or wrongly they have lost the mystique that Royalty used to have, when we had no idea what they thought or cared about.

Dongdingdong · 11/12/2021 21:48

I genuinely had no idea that Jordan was a holiday destination until I clicked on this thread.

julieca · 11/12/2021 21:48

But we always knew something about the Queen and Queen Mother.

ClaudiaJ1 · 11/12/2021 21:52

@Mara263

If you want I’ll-judged, Harry and Megan announced their first pregnancy on a day of the year that internationally marked baby loss awareness

Bad PR judgement there 😂

Oh grow up! @Mara263 I doubt they had even heard of such a day, I sure haven't.
julieca · 11/12/2021 21:53

@Mara263 I have never heard of one day marking that. I have googled and it is as I thought one week. So what you are saying does not appear to be true.

ClaudiaJ1 · 11/12/2021 21:59
@Skydaze,

I don't like the furry rug or the camel seats. I think the whole montage is reminiscent of pictures of colonial families in full British Victorian garb out for an elephant ride, or sitting out on a lawn having a picnic surrounded by people in native clothes who are their servants.

The evoking of the colonial past that is implicit in references to sunny Christmas weather (as you believe this card is all about) is distasteful since the colonial past was a time when indigenous peoples were victimised on a massive scale, when slavery was practiced, when transportation of hundreds of thousands of convicts and orphans was a means of populating vast open spaces owned by others, and where cultures were destroyed.
@mathanxiety You are way out of line, distasteful and very offensive. Australians have the right to enjoy our Christmas regardless of how our country was colonised. Please keep your racist and offensive ignorant thoughts to yourself.

LookslovelyinSpringtime · 11/12/2021 22:01

@julieca

Okay, thanks. The family snaps I guess are the photography. I had forgotten she liked watching tennis. Maybe I would really like her if I met her, maybe not. But her public image is one of blandness. Someone on MN said they worked with her and they just remember a quiet woman who didn't make much of an impression. That is what she seems like to me as well.
I think if I were Kate I would want to be as quiet and bland as I could be too. Much better that than being picked over and trashed . The less anyone knows the better from her point of view. She does what she needs to very well. Her private life is private.
ssd · 11/12/2021 22:04

I agree with your thread title @tinkywinkyshandbag

I mean, im happy for them they have a super life and super holidays i can only dream of

I just dont need it shoved in my face

My mental health is fragile enough

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 11/12/2021 22:05

I find it really weird how none of their kids really looks like either of them

😆 are you blind?

ssd · 11/12/2021 22:08

The kids are their doubles Grin

DifferentHair · 11/12/2021 22:13

They need to start walking the walk with the climate change messaging.

The animal skin, the foreign travel (I'm sure the three year old really appreciates the historical significance of Jordan)...not on message.

It's also very posed with the stools and the bizarre gold orb that William is sitting on.

I think with children the more natural and unposed photos are a lot nicer. I think Kate is clever to release unremarkable photos to limit attention on her kids.

Not sure what they're trying to achieve with this one.

julieca · 11/12/2021 22:17

@LookslovelyinSpringtime then she won't be popular in the long run. The key to popularity with celebrities, which they are whether they accept it or not, is to show a little bit about yourself, but keep most of it private.

Blimey. Please don’t read thus mumsnet thread Will our children be the poor ones at private school

So many people have so much income. We forget it the constantly reported news of doom The royals really only have a long history to separate them from tons and tons of other very rich people. There are loads of people having lovely holidays and super lives.

Maybe you haven’t heard of it but lots of people have, I didn’t just make it up 😂 it actually did upset a lot of people.

although I mistakenly thought it was international and it appears it may just be the UK

not bashing Meghan and Harry but thought considering their extensive charity work and the support of this day by many large charities… I thought their PR team would have definitely picked it up

StoneofDestiny · 11/12/2021 22:25

I believe Hitler was faithful to his wife. I’m thinking adultery isn’t the worst thing a head of state can do

😂😂Hitler was only married to Eva a few hours before they killed themselves!

julieca · 11/12/2021 22:33

@Mara263 okay I was wrong. I have never heard of this. Meghan and Harry also lost a baby, so I would be surprised if this was deliberate.

ssd · 11/12/2021 22:36

@lightisnotwhite, thanks for telling me that. Kind of you.

Mara263 · 11/12/2021 22:39

@julieca in fairness this was before they los a baby and having gone through it I’m sure they’d be mortified if they realised what they had done at the time

Not blaming them because a lot of it goes through their PR etc

I was just surprised that it wasn’t picked up and seeing as they were talking about “ill-judged” actions of the royals and their teams I thought that was a pretty good example

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 11/12/2021 22:50

I don't think you can get any more "Christmassy" than the Middle East. That's where Christmas comes from 😂

julieca · 11/12/2021 22:58

@JulesRimetStillGleaming The Middle East is an enormous place. No Christmas does not come from Petra.

It's a very minor thing, and not a well known or recognised day. Every day is 'some' type of day. No one can run their life by checking what international day it is. If people were upset about it, they are immature, shallow and selfish and need to grow up.

Mara263 · 11/12/2021 23:44

Wow

Seeing as it’s backed by many major UK charities and is talked about on things like breakfast tv etc I’d say it wasn’t a minor thing at all.

I’d suggest that the only person that needs to grow up is you and consider how immature, shallow and selfish it is to have such a lack of empathy for other people’s feelings.

If you think someone needs to check in to see what 'day' it is when they get married or announce a pregnancy, then, you as I said, are extremely immature, shallow and selfish, unrealistic and lacking any empathy. Grow up.
Mara263 · 11/12/2021 23:59

@ClaudiaJ1 It’s not the same for any old Joe Bloggs though is it? A publicised pregnancy on a publicised day for baby loss isn’t exactly good PR is it? I just said I thought that was I’ll judges considering their extensive charity work… and apparently that makes me selfish?

Also just repeatedly telling someone to grow up doesn’t make your argument stronger you know

It is extremely irrational to expect anyone to run their life by what type of 'day' it is. There are 365/366 days in a year and perhaps at least 2000 'special days'. No one takes these 'days' seriously expect for say Remembrance Day November 11, things like that. I doubt their PR people would even take notice of nonsense like 'days', so it wouldn't be on there radar. Or anyone elses. It's all so childish.
