to think William and Kate's Christmascard this year was badly judged?

So not only has William been hectoring us about climate change and sustainable travel, but there's been a pandemic which has been a pandemic which for many people has been financially devastating, and for most of us a holiday seems a distant pipe dream. So this year of all years they have chosen a photo of themselves all looking tanned and relaxed on a (presumably free) holiday. Just feels a tad ill judged?

@AnyFucker

Pretty much everything they do is ill-judged
This

If you want I’ll-judged, Harry and Megan announced their first pregnancy on a day of the year that internationally marked baby loss awareness

Bad PR judgement there 😂

I don’t really get it. I can’t imagine looking at a picture if a family I don’t know and thinking oh how lovely. It’s an attractive woman, an unattractive man and their normal looking kids on holiday.

Looking beyond the photo, I find the use of the royals to soften up deals in the Middle East pretty distasteful. Someone is making money from the Christmas card being a shot from Jordan I would imagine.

I don’t know them personally at all but deal with the royal family as an institution regularly as part of my job. They behave like a cold commercial operation, which is precisely what they are. The Christmas card is absolute part of the business of being the royal family it’s not a personal family thing at all.

@Tigertigertigertiger

I hadn’t seen it till now. What a beautiful family. I think it’s lovely.
I think most families could scrub up well in exotic locations with a ton of money and personal servants, hairdressers, and makeup artists at their disposal.
julieca · 11/12/2021 18:26

@Fridafever what deals in the middle east are being brokered that they could be being used for?

Skydaze · 11/12/2021 18:42

Some pp don't seem to realize that Christmas happens around the world, including in places where it's summer and sweltering. Maybe they've been taken in by the "do they know it's Christmas time at all" malarkey where poor Africa doesn't get snow so clearly Christmas is not a thing Xmas Hmm

From my part of the world, Kate, Wills & co have Christmas pegged - hot, sunny, get the kids to take a pic then jump in the pool to cool off before a BBQ lunch. That's exactly what we'll be doing on the day this year and have done every Christmas I can remember - swapping the pool for the beach if we were at the grandparents. Kayaking, surfing, water fights, water slides, games of cricket or badminton, fanning yourself in the shade, slathering yourself in sunblock, complaining about the humidity - all of that is Christmassy as all get out to us. We're part of the Commonwealth and all so Xmas Biscuit to those who say the card isn't Christmassy. We celebrate too Xmas Wink

For the first time ever, your Christmas sounds bloody miles better to me than our British winter one. Fun, relaxed and celebratory. Bliss.
mathanxiety · 11/12/2021 19:08

@Skydaze,

I don't like the furry rug or the camel seats. I think the whole montage is reminiscent of pictures of colonial families in full British Victorian garb out for an elephant ride, or sitting out on a lawn having a picnic surrounded by people in native clothes who are their servants.

The evoking of the colonial past that is implicit in references to sunny Christmas weather (as you believe this card is all about) is distasteful since the colonial past was a time when indigenous peoples were victimised on a massive scale, when slavery was practiced, when transportation of hundreds of thousands of convicts and orphans was a means of populating vast open spaces owned by others, and where cultures were destroyed.

Skydaze · 11/12/2021 19:17

Well that's not what I saw 🤷 I saw a photo that looks a lot like the photos our family takes every year on Christmas Day, minus the rug & camel seats, plus one Santa hat and maybe a pouting child. And my comments were directly in relation to those saying summery tans and sunny holidays aren't Christmassy, which is just not true.

You want to critique potential racist undertones in the photo then fine. But that's not what my post was commenting on.

What a load of old nonsense

Skydaze · 11/12/2021 19:20

@59lightisnotwhite don't, worry, we're apparently predicted to have a cyclone hit us in a week so it could be raining Xmas Wink though I would love a winter Christmas one year so maybe we could swap - obviously for a year with the aforementioned sun and not the cyclone Grin

ricepolo · 11/12/2021 19:22

@BoredZelda I believe Hitler married his mistress shortly before committing suicide so staying faithful wasn’t a big ask…!

mathanxiety · 11/12/2021 19:27

Are you disputing the facts, @derxa?

MumofBoys79 · 11/12/2021 19:34

William looks like he's laid or is sitting on a golden egg.

derxa · 11/12/2021 19:36

@mathanxiety

Are you disputing the facts, *@derxa*?
William and Kate are trying to evoke the country they are in not evoke a colonial past. Why on Earth would they want to do that? It makes no sense.
codexa · 11/12/2021 19:53

To me, the lot of them are merely boring and plastic caricatures of themselves. They are totally irrelevant and no one missed them at all during Covid lockdown either.

I also think the photo on the Xmas card was a joke. I'd say Kate and William are not talking, and the kids were bored and being naughty, it's not as if archaeological sites like Petra would float their boats now is it?

So in desperation, the PR firm took pics of each of them separately when they could get them to sit down and in the case of K and W look half normal, and photoshopped them into some sort of background and Voila!

Idiots the lot of them, and I enjoy having a bloody good go at their ridiculously imperious antics, or their gooning faces whilst each of them are mentally totalling up the credit balance in their Swiss bank accounts. We are just the poor unwashed subjects remember!

It is great fun to picture each of them with constipation and having to sit on the loo like the rest of us. Shit the Leveller and all that.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 11/12/2021 19:56

I've totally gone off them in recent times, they really annoy me.
I didn't like the way William was joking with a paramedic about people complaining of a cough and worried it was covid.
It was very off hand "like er no.. It's just a cough". OK for him to sneer when we have an over stretched health system to try and navigate.
I'm actually much more team Harry and Megan.

Bell had only been cautioned for what was deemed by those who prosecute, to be a low level sexual assault of an adult

"Only" Hmm

to use this to further what is clearly just a hatred of the monarchy is superficial and shows a real lack of critical thinking

Set it in the wider context of repeated support for his rubber sworded fence, repeated abuse of taxpayer funded travelling, tax manipulation, political meddling and the acceptance of murky charity donations and still try to lecture on critical thinking.

NotAshamedToFancyTheGrinch · 11/12/2021 21:19

For most people Christmas is snow

It hardly ever snows on Christmas Day in the uk so why the fuck is snow one of the top things people associate with Christmas anyway?

Roussette · 11/12/2021 21:31

Because it's on all the Christmas cards, because we live in the UK, because the RF live in the UK... robins, baubles, snow, frost, deer, pine trees and all of that

julieca · 11/12/2021 21:43

"Bell had only been cautioned for what was deemed by those who prosecute, to be a low level sexual assault of an adult."

Yes the only is disgusting. It says everything. You don't think this is a big deal. I suspect Charles may think that too.
