Train picnic etiquette...masks

137 replies

Justcannotbearsed · 10/12/2021 13:42

Just bought a train picnic for a 2 hour train journey. Not crowded train. Whats the etiquette or do I just need to starve.

Yabu.... starve
Yanbu .... fill your boots.

I don't think train picnics are vulgar, but I think they aren't really sensible in the current situation. If it is just lunch surely a quick sandwich would suffice?

I would want to eat if travelling during a time when I would normally eat, but if I took a 2 hour train journey between meal times I would maybe only want a cup of tea.

Soontobe60 · 10/12/2021 18:21

@Justcannotbearsed

Sausage rolls, salad, crisps, small bottle of wine, baguette, cheese…

In retrospect a sandwich would have been easier. Though someone else has just got on with a rotisserie chicken…

If you sat next to me I’m afraid I’d get the rage and probably bash your crisps to smithereens so that I wouldn’t need to hear you eat them
WorriedMumofTeen16 · 10/12/2021 19:20

Op nosh refers to oral sex, I am assuming so anyway. Also in the Midlands and that's the other meaning I'm aware of

NothingIsWrong · 10/12/2021 19:24

To nosh someone off is to give them oral sex.

Tbf you can't wear a mask while doing it, if you are doing it properly..

Ghostlyglow · 10/12/2021 19:29

I'm jealous. I love a train picnic.
Some right miseries on here, as usual Grin

rainbowmash · 10/12/2021 19:38

I know I'm not going to make any friends by saying this, but I find it unbearably crass to eat on a train anywhere other than the dining car, or if the journey is super long and you've got no other option.

You don't need to eat a meal on a two-hour journey! It makes me absolutely cringe to see grown adults pulling out a full picnic lunch on public transport. Gross for other people around you to smell your food hear you munching and slurping when they haven't signed up to travel in an enclosed picnic area.

Times 100 if you're doing it in the designated quiet coach! And times a million if you're de-masking on a short journey just because you can't go an hour without a snack.

Also, it's just not my idea of treating myself well. I'd much rather plan my day with a later/earlier lunch.

"So you can just avoid wearing a mask by eating and drinking then? Is this just trains or buses as well?"

If you're drinking mini bottles of wine this surely counts as sanitising alcohol! Grin

@TurnUpTurnip

And planes - no mask needed if you're eating or drinking on trains and planes.
cardibach · 10/12/2021 20:13

@rainbowmash dining car? Are you travelling in the 1950s? Most trains I go on have a trolley or a counter you can buy stuff to go back to your own seat. Nicer seen dining car to my knowledge.
There are also a lot of people being very odd about the word ‘picnic’. It doesn’t require a cloth or plates. I have never had anything like this but I’ve had loads of picnics both in trains and otherwise.

Cheerbear24 · 10/12/2021 20:16

Go for it. People eat on trains all the time.
Things I have seen people eating on my daily train commute:
Burger King - everyone was salivating
Magnum - ‘magnum lady’ became her nickname in my head as she did this quite often. I admired her brazenness in throwing herself so unselfconsciously into enjoying her ice cream.
Full pack of ‘nice’ biscuits - this bloke ploughed through them, one after another. Again I admired his commitment to the cause.
Eggs & Avocodo - This is the only person I thought went too far. In fact wanted to fuvking murder this woman. She completely didn’t care that her boiled fucking egg keto breakfast made the carriage smell of farts 💨 every single day.

Anonymous48 · 10/12/2021 20:17

As long as you replace your mask between sips and bites you're probably ok.

Anonymous48 · 10/12/2021 20:19

@Abraxan

You're allowed to briefly remove your mask as you take a bite or a sip, but then immediately replace it. It's not like you're allowed to just sit there nursing a drink without wearing your mask.

CherryBlossomAutumn · 10/12/2021 23:06

I think all you entitled selfish ‘I HAVE to have my Chardonnay after work and my pret sandwich I’m just sooo famished’… never mind if I give you Covid you person sat over there coming back from your chemotherapy appointment and immunocompromised… because I literally CANNOT WAIT…

Should all pile into one carriage together without masks and just get on with it while everyone else, who want to protect each other, can just sit on our own one’s somewhere far, far away.

If bloody only…

MichelleScarn · 10/12/2021 23:17

@CherryBlossomAutumn but why should they have to spend a journey maskless if they're only taking the mask off to eat/drink?

RampantIvy · 10/12/2021 23:17

I can't manage to go from breakfast to an evening meal without something to eat. It makes me feel unwell. If the OP is travelling on a train at lunchtime, and it is the only downtime she has to eat lunch I don't think it is unreasonable of her to do so.

CherryBlossomAutumn · 10/12/2021 23:27
@CherryBlossomAutumn but why should they have to spend a journey maskless if they're only taking the mask off to eat/drink?
Because they could wait. Because they really don’t bloody need to. Because they want to quote ‘have a leisurely picnic’ not take a sip of water. And because the virus doesn’t care, masks off for 30 minutes is plenty for the OP to infect mr cancer patient on the seat opposite.

CherryBlossomAutumn · 10/12/2021 23:28

100 deaths a day…

Absolutely. Completely. Totally. Preventable…

No idea what else to say.

MichelleScarn · 10/12/2021 23:34

@CherryBlossomAutumn are you working from the belief that everyone else out there is positive for covid and out there to maliciously infect people?

CherryBlossomAutumn · 11/12/2021 00:11

Yes of course. That is exactly it @MichelleScarn how did you know?!

I am ONLY talking about the people who KNOW that they have Covid and who maliciously infect others eating a picnic!

FFS

MichelleScarn · 11/12/2021 00:13

Good to know @CherryBlossomAutumn Wink

saltinesandcoffeecups · 11/12/2021 01:30

@fedup65356

 • I agree! Unhygienic too.

@Justcannotbearsed are you going to set things out on a table?*

Clearly the OP intends to set up one of those weird grazing tables and spread her salad all over in a single layer on the grubby table top… isn’t that what everyone does?

I think you might be decades out of date. I've been on many trains including intercity ones and also the Eurostar. The "dining car" you refer to is at best an onboard shop selling takeaway snacks and drinks that you take back to your seat. It is usually in the centre of the train with no seating or tables aa the counter you queue at runs along much of the carriage.

On other trains there is sometimes trolley service (at your seat when it does come) and sometimes nothing, so best to take your own.

These are often the only services available, yet your judgement is that people who have used them and brought their food back to their seats are crass! Where else should they eat it? In the toilet?

I can promise that what you imagined to be "salivating" was absolutely Totally Heaving. 😑 Egg Avocado woman - almost as grim The rest.... well tbh I would just arrange to arrive early or late. I couldn't bear that kind of carrying on

You are correct, for the most part. Here in Ireland on the Intercity trains, there is a dining carriage which also has a bar. There is additionally a trolley service. The food items available are normally boring sandwiches, crisps, chocolate bars, and crisps But never offensively smelly food. Anyway that was pre-Covid. I went home last weekend on a 2h journey for my dad's 83rd birthday. I ate before I travelled. I did bring "journey juice" from which I took covert slugs from as we all wear masks here on public transport
Justcannotbearsed · 11/12/2021 06:15

I’m home now but if I hadn’t taken some food for the train (or eaten on the plane) I’d not have eaten from 8am till 8.30 pm. I’d have been v cranky.
