Justcannotbearsed · 10/12/2021 13:42

Just bought a train picnic for a 2 hour train journey. Not crowded train. Whats the etiquette or do I just need to starve.

Yabu.... starve
Yanbu .... fill your boots.

Its the law to have a train picnic on a journey of more than 30 minutes. And you must drink wine with it. Just go for it

JuicySatsuma85 · 10/12/2021 15:51

@HalfTermHalfTerm

If I’m honest I’d think you were absolutely taking the mickey removing your mask for long enough to eat all of that.

I can see I’m in the minority though 🤷🏻‍♀️

Completely agree. Also if you can’t hold off eating for two hours on a train you need to see a doctor!
Topseyt · 10/12/2021 15:52

@GreenFingersWouldBeHandy

Urgh the sounds and smells of people munching and crunching on a train is vile. Why not have a meal before you set off; and one when you get to where you are going?
Because I don't want to. If I want to eat on the train I will.thanks. It is allowed.

OP, what you are doing is fine. I like your style. 😎
I regularly go to visit my mother by train. I buy food and a bottle of juice before I get on. I like that if I don't eat or drink it too fast and pace myself I can go for most of the journey with my mask down under my chin (yes, the much derided MN chin sling 🤣). I can breathe easily that way.

You've now given me the idea of buying the mini wine bottle (or two). I will be remembering that next time. 😉

A pp described a man eating a bag of nuts during a journey in order to have his mask down as a dick. If so then I am also a dick because I deliberately plan my "train picnic" for that and will continue to do so. I see no harm. The carriage is rarely totally full.

Covid rules
Twee made up phrase
Eating in public
Excessive sized meal
Daytime drinking, straight from a bottle no less

This post seems almost designed to send mumsnetters into a frenzy of pearl clutching. OP, if you are a troll, I salute your skills! If not enjoy your picnic and maybe consider trolling as a new hobby Xmas Grin

skodadoda · 10/12/2021 15:59

@Nevertime

2 hours? What are you doing with a mini bottle? Grin
🤣🤣🤣

@mugoftea456

Yep, you can have a nosh on buses too

My knowledge of the word nosh must be different to yours.
Having a nosh anywhere in public is absolutely not okay!

Same here, if I was noshing in public I would expect to be arrested!
sjxoxo · 10/12/2021 16:02

If it’s busy and you can keep a bit of distance I think keep your mask on. If you’re on your own with space no prob

midsomermurderess · 10/12/2021 16:07

'Nosh', 'have a nosh', it was a copy editor making changes that sent Giles Coren off the deep end in a later published email rant wasn't it. The changing of his meaning.

Ha ha ha, must be your mind! Nought wrong with gobbling some nosh on public transport
HelloDulling · 10/12/2021 16:14

And you definitely wouldn’t have your mask on.

fedup65356 · 10/12/2021 16:14

Are you going to put a picnic cloth over the table, set out your food and plates?

AmIgoinghomeforXmas · 10/12/2021 16:19

I can't believe you haven't bought a reusable straw along for your wine OP, has Mumsnet taught you nothing?

CherryBlossomAutumn · 10/12/2021 16:32

They are serving food and drink. But it doesn’t mean that it’s sensible to eat on trains.

The omicron is so transmissible that yes taking off your masks just puts others at more risk.

But, as others have encouraged you, fill your boots!

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 10/12/2021 16:34

I can go for most of the journey with my mask down under my chin

Why even bother wearing one then? So disrespectful to everyone else in your carriage, the train staff and the station staff.

Just stay at home.

Flapjacker48 · 10/12/2021 16:35

Setting out a whole picnic on a train is vulgar. Quick sandwich or pastry is ok.

Rumbled. But i still enjoyed my picnic.

What’s ‘nosh’ I’m scared to google. In the midlands I’m sure it means eat….

Life is too short to think this.

Vulgar…ace.

Is jay rayner vulgar too? Sorry for daily mail link www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/food/article-6316723/Food-critic-Jay-Rayner-divides-Twitter-middle-class-train-picnic.html

RampantIvy · 10/12/2021 16:42

The only thing I would say is that it is a lot of food for just one person, unless the OK is sharing the picnic between 3 or 4 people.

TarpaulinEyes · 10/12/2021 16:44

OP, to nosh is eating. Some MNers appear to be aware of a more vulgar connotation, shame on them! Grin

Get a bloody life! Jealous & miserable.
Pazuzu · 10/12/2021 16:51

OP, next time you have a picnic get a bag of freshly fried chips with lashings of salt and vinegar. Wash it down with Blue WKD and Mad Dog 20/20.

You're going to wind someone up on here regardless of what you do so you may as well go for the burn.

I agree! Unhygienic too.

@Justcannotbearsed are you going to set things out on a table?

I do a 42 minute train journey twice a day. I don't feel the need to eat whilst on the train! Not many people eat on the trains I catch now. So no more people scarfing down one of those pasties they sell at Victoria (which stink).
FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 10/12/2021 17:19

@JauntyJinty

What’s a train picnic?

You get a baguette then use scotch eggs and tomatoes as wheels, add a sausage roll for the drivers cab and continue to decorate until it looks like a locomotive

I really want to do this now 😳
