Train picnic etiquette...masks

137 replies

Justcannotbearsed · 10/12/2021 13:42

Just bought a train picnic for a 2 hour train journey. Not crowded train. Whats the etiquette or do I just need to starve.

Yabu.... starve
Yanbu .... fill your boots.

@TurnUpTurnip

So you can just avoid wearing a mask by eating and drinking then? Is this just trains or buses as well?
I went down to London in the summer. A man near me ate a bag of nuts all through the journey so he could keep his mask off. Dick.

It won't be quite as wonderful having a train picnic, as it was in the oldie days,on the steam trains, that had little compartments , quite private, and you had a long journey to go on. We usually had some sandwiches,some crisps.an orange, and a flask of tea, ha ha, just my memories of 1950 ish times !

HalfTermHalfTerm · 10/12/2021 14:24

If I’m honest I’d think you were absolutely taking the mickey removing your mask for long enough to eat all of that.

I can see I’m in the minority though 🤷🏻‍♀️

itwasntaparty · 10/12/2021 14:27

Gin in a can is my go to, go for it op!

I thought the same. Crack on with a sandwich and glass of wine if that’s your thing but you’ve practically described a banquet (in terms of a ‘train picnic’)
mugoftea456 · 10/12/2021 14:29

Yep, you can have a nosh on buses too

My knowledge of the word nosh must be different to yours.
Having a nosh anywhere in public is absolutely not okay!

HalfTermHalfTerm · 10/12/2021 14:31

@Cornettoninja I would even be very Hmm at the wine part of wine and a sandwich, but I’m obviously a grumpy cow Grin

WFHiswank · 10/12/2021 14:34

I'm far from worried about Covid but I definitely wouldn't be doing this. Closed compartment, even with a few people. Unnecessary risk.

@Justcannotbearsed

Sausage rolls, salad, crisps, small bottle of wine, baguette, cheese…

In retrospect a sandwich would have been easier. Though someone else has just got on with a rotisserie chicken…

For a 2 hour journey 🤣🤣🤣 hope you enjoyed it tho
Lushplease · 10/12/2021 14:35

Remove your mask for a sandwich and drink of juice but for a bloody feast then I'd be Hmm.

Fallagain · 10/12/2021 14:36

@CanofCant

M&S sell wine in plastic 'glasses' for occasions such as this.
I was just about to say this.
Freetodowhatiwant · 10/12/2021 14:36

I heard the term ‘Journey juice’ recently for wine/ drinks you have on a train. Love it.

girlmom21 · 10/12/2021 14:36

Who on Earth drinks wine through a straw Grin

Fallagain · 10/12/2021 14:37

I think its fine to remove your mask for 10 mins for a quick meal but not for any longer.

Still loads of people not wearing masks at all on trains so it’s a non issue really .....let OP enjoy her lunch.... at least she plans on putting her mask back on
Anaximedes · 10/12/2021 14:38

Well, yes. Yes you can.

Whether you should (on a short journey, or without any other need such as low blood sugar / real thirst) is debatable.

Train picnic on a longish journey when you need lunch, of course that's fine.

CovidCorvid · 10/12/2021 14:40

Ask yourself…..what would Boris do?

I suspect he’d eat the food and say “all guidelines were followed “. Enjoy the food

Grin me too but I try to be reasonable! Tbh I hate people eating on public transport at the best of times never mind the whole mask thing. It’s taken me a while to train myself to be tolerant of people eating at all never mind making an occasion of it.

Sprig1 · 10/12/2021 14:42

So long as it isn't stinky food crack on.

KatherineJaneway · 10/12/2021 14:44

@Nevertime

2 hours? What are you doing with a mini bottle? Grin

FrankGrillosWrist · 10/12/2021 14:45

@MelonTits

You have always been allowed to remove a mask to eat and drink on trains.
No you have not, they banned it for a while.

OP, if you're going to the match alcohol's banned on that train, although I doubt you are. Just don't eat eggs!

Ineedaduvetday · 10/12/2021 14:45

@A580Hojas

I wouldn't be eating in a filthy public environment where I couldn't wash my hands in a clean bathroom immediately beforehand. It's only 2 hours!
Hand sanitiser, you’re never far from the stuff these days Grin
Billandben444 · 10/12/2021 14:46

You're taking the piss

Justcannotbearsed · 10/12/2021 14:46

I came straight out of a meeting, grabbed some food, which I’ve eaten (not all of it) and will be getting straight off train and onto a plane and won’t be home till 8. 30.

I’d have arrived grouchy or have had to remove mask to eat something at some point on some form of transport.

I am occasionally removing mask to drink a bit of wine, sadly no glasses or G&t in tins in M&S. The wine I will admit is egregious but I’m enjoying it.
