to think my IL's really mean

I've just opened a xmas card from IL's and inside was a cheque for the grand total of £36 for 3 children.

My IL's are well off pensioners retired in France. My mum is on her own on benefits living in social housing and she spends £100 per child per occasion.

AIBU to expect IL's to spend more - or is this the difference between middle class GPs and working class ones?

£12 is nothing??

Blimey, £12 is a fair bit to spend on a pressie actually for someone who isn't your own child/spouse.

I have about 20 presents to buy, so that's nearly £250 already if you spend £12 per person. That's not nothing, that's a fair wedge to be spending.

I'm with the majority. £100 is way too much, especially from a pensioner. We don't spend that much per child on our own 3 children. £12 sounds just right. Up to £20 from a grandparent is great I think.

Who says £12 is nothing? My 3 children produced lists of things they'd like (relatives always ask for ideas), and they came up with a variety of things costing between £4 and about £18. I could get my children either one 'bigger' thing or 2-3 smaller things like books for £12 and they would be perfectly happy with that.

It shouldn't be about money should it.
