Finally finished my christmas shopping and have added up everything ive spent on presents. 1 child, dont buy for siblings but plenty of neice and nephews and buy for some adults, partner, parents etc.. and its come to just under £900. I cant do that again next year. I need to plan better.

My child has accounted for 1/3 of the costs but i dont buy toys other than christmas birthdays.

Im sure it was around 600 last year. Has everyone elses christmas budgets took a hit

Why do you need to know?

santasmuma · 09/12/2021 14:41

I have spent a lot. I don't really like to talk figures though, it doesn't make any odds to you and no matter how much/little you spend there will always be a poster telling you it's wrong. It's not. You spend what you want/can. I spend what I choose and everyone else above does the same.

We only buy for our DS's . We have an agreement in the wider family not to buy stuff for them and they don't buy stuff for us. Takes the financial worry and stress out of Christmas. But for the DS we have got them what they wanted.

Thanks everyone
I think its one of them things i wouldnt really discuss with my friends so getting a reality check from a forum is the next option.

Im on the side of grew up quite poor but a big family so christmas was always a thing so dont know if its compensating or just enjoying life.

It is alot though and i vow to shop smarter next year.

For the person who said come to agreement of no neices and nephews presents, makes sense to save money but i would rather chop my own arm off tbh

I haven't even started Christmas shopping yet. It's been a nightmare. Haven't even done letter to Santa yet. Feeling like a crap mum. Grrr

No partner or kids but I have other family and a niece so I’ve spent probably about £150 . In my house growing up my mum was pretty poor and only spent what she could. That moral has lived in me and I only spend what I can afford and don’t buy any tacky crap that will get thrown out a month later. I buy for my friends but we always set a budget too.

We usually spend between £1500 and £2000.
This would include food and alcohol, hosting several large family gatherings and overnight visitors. We usually buy a real Christmas tree and a door wreath and possibly an an extra set of twinkly lights. Last year we have Cash gifts for adult families and actual gifts for Grandchildren plus token bottles of wine/ biscuits/chocolates for Aunts & Uncles.
Last year was a very quiet Christmas due to lockdown we reduced our presents to Grandchildren only. We are having a quiet
Christmas this year and Christmas for us will come in at under £200.

The reduction in stress is a wonderful feeling.

@Almostmenopausal of course I’m buying my kids stuff but I just hate buying stuff for the sake of it. They then go to their dads and get more stuff so I don’t go overboard, I’ve boxes of Lego in the cupboard unopened (nephews getting those) I’ve 4 boys so lot is handed down so they have plenty I’m just wary of adding more stuff that won’t be used they don’t really ask for much. I’ll probably do it all on my days off at end of week, car mot this week is £800 so bit of a shitty week for me.

Welshmaenad · 12/12/2021 01:10

Probably somewhere in the region of £2k but I've spread the buying over a good few months. Most of it on my 2dc and DP - about £450 each, £350 on DPs parents but they are very very good to me and deserve a treat.
