Finally finished my christmas shopping and have added up everything ive spent on presents. 1 child, dont buy for siblings but plenty of neice and nephews and buy for some adults, partner, parents etc.. and its come to just under £900. I cant do that again next year. I need to plan better.

My child has accounted for 1/3 of the costs but i dont buy toys other than christmas birthdays.

Im sure it was around 600 last year. Has everyone elses christmas budgets took a hit

AIBU - too much and ridiculous

About a grand! That's including Christmas treats like longleat light festival and Christmas markets. It's a bit silly to be honest but we can afford it .

foxgoosefinch · 08/12/2021 18:56

Probably spent around £500 on presents - around £300 all in on family, friends, niblings, teachers/TAs, and so on; and around £200 on DD.

I’ve also booked a theatre trip and meal out for me, DD and my mum, which will be about £200; and I’ll probably spend an additional £150 on food and alcohol over the Christmas holiday.

If we go to a panto or out for a meal (looking increasingly unlikely after today’s press conference 😬), then I’ll expect to spend just under £1k for everything to do with Christmas.

Gingernaut · 08/12/2021 18:58

Socks - £20
Sweatshirt - £15
DVD - £15

requiredusername · 08/12/2021 19:00

One hundred million dollars 💵

A580Hojas · 08/12/2021 19:01

Only bought 1 present so far, a velvetiser for DD.

Chely · 08/12/2021 19:01

It will be over a grand when I'm done, . We have 6 kids and I budget £100 each for them and dh. Parents and siblings on both sides, I also buy for kids of cousins that we're close to and a couple of friends too. I save each month and do not use credit for any of it, I have a spreadsheet to track as I start buying early.

Chely · 08/12/2021 19:02

DH spends whatever on me, no budgeting and that's why I do the rest.

MsJuniper · 08/12/2021 19:05

I budget for £600/yr so £50/month on my regular budget spreadsheet. Then I have a Christmas spreadsheet that I update each year so I can see what was bought and how much was spent each year. Yes I am sad but I love a spreadsheet!

For reference we have 2 DC and 5 DN/Ns. Plus parents, siblings and a few close friends whose DC I buy something for.

Last year we went a bit over but we'd saved money on other things because of lockdown. Previous year things were tight so we kept it under £500.

Most ever was about £1k when I won some money about 10 years ago and decided to treat everyone.

shiningstar2 · 08/12/2021 19:14

Argh!!! Wish I hadn't added up. £220 on Dh. £250 each on two dgc
£150 on DD
£80 on dsil
£100 on great nephews and nieces
£110 on DM
£100 on dear cousin and family

Also sundry Christmas treats/days out with DD and family
£100
Sundry Xmas tips £50

Plus hosting 7 of us on Christmas day with all food drinks and taxi home for DD and family. Not adding this in because it is our pleasure to have them.

shiningstar2 · 08/12/2021 19:20

Having said that we have had our years of doing Christmas on a budget. When we couldn't afford much we never went over aright budget and still had great fun. So often when our DD was young, the answer was 'not possible' when it came to expensive gifts. It our pleasure now to give lovely surprised. We can afford it, we do have favourite charities we also support at ,Christmas, and you can't take it with you 😁🧑‍🎄

yoyo1234 · 08/12/2021 19:27

Actually another £21 as well so £596

LynetteScavo · 08/12/2021 19:36

So far I have spent £0.

DH spent £20 on advent calendars.

Oh, actually I've spend £5 on work secret Santa, but I need to have that sorted by next Friday.

I was in bed for almost the whole of November. Maybe I should get shopping next weekend Grin

NotYourHolidayDick · 08/12/2021 19:37

Oh god

I've spent FAR more than anyone has mentioned yet.

But I don't care. I LOVE Xmas and it's not just consumerism. It's a pure love for the day and the food and the trimmings and everything. Love love love it. Even my teens cuddle me, we laugh, we have a girls vs boys family quiz with prizes, it's just The. Best.

VanillaIce1 · 08/12/2021 19:39

Around 2k but that included a tablet and Nintendo switch for my son, and my Dd wanted the new lol doll house £230 and a laptop £250 so it does add up. I do go over the top and I'm aware it's a crazy amount, however they are my kids and deserve to be spoiled. Both have sen and they struggle a lot so I do compensate for that with Christmas. I'm not in no debt. Could the money be used for something better? Maybe yes but it's ok.

VanillaIce1 · 08/12/2021 19:39

@NotYourHolidayDick Love this post.

mathanxiety · 08/12/2021 19:41

Five adult DCs, $200.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 08/12/2021 19:42

Dd so far £150. Still got stocking and some. Wireless headphones to get, will be about £200 in total
MIL £50
My parents will be £100 ish
Assorted nieces and nephews x 7 @ £15 each - £105
Presents for grandparents and us from DD - she puts in £10 each and we top it up. Will be about £40

That's it, we don't buy for each other.

That's it, about £500

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 08/12/2021 19:48

Three hundred pounds.

LittleGwyneth · 08/12/2021 20:11

About £375 on DP, and then about £75 each on DM, DF, DS and DB. £30 each on Godchildren.

mswales · 08/12/2021 20:15

It would take me a few years to spend 600 on toys for my 4 year old so yes 300 each birthday and Christmas does seem a huge amount to me! It's so easy to get good quality stuff things second hand and plus with the presents they get from others they don;t need much. If you;re getting that much each birthday and christmas does that mean they only play with stuff for six months to a year before moving on to other things? If not where do you fit all these toys?!
I spend about 50 on DS, 10-15 on 6 nieces and nephews, 20 each on parents, nothing on siblings as we decided not to buy, 20 on stepsister, 15 on one auntie, 15 on nursery keyworker and nothing on friends. So about 200, and I have a good salary. It's not about the presents, it's about being together and the food and drink, which I probably spend almost as much on!

Maybe83 · 08/12/2021 20:15

It will be more than €2,000 when it's all totalled. That's for 3 kids, grandchild, DIL, parents, MIL sibling nieces and nephews. We have spent between 400 and 600 on each of the kids alone this year but they each have gotten expensive one of items.

fedup65356 · 08/12/2021 20:20

Who cares!

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 08/12/2021 20:20

Errrm am I including the cars gift of 2 new tyres? If so about £650. I'm calling those tyres a gift because it's so close to Christmas 🤣
If not approx £400 give or take a few quid, for both sets of parents, grandparents, siblings, ds, dh and our dog.

prynaithda21 · 08/12/2021 20:27

Think of those who cannot spend the amounts of money referred to on this thread. Or those who will be without a loved one who has died this year.

Maybe83 · 08/12/2021 20:35

@prynaithda21 I will thinking of lost loved ones thanks very much. 5 including my son. So I don't really give to fucks what other people think about what we have spent on our remaining children. It won't stop the fact all I have for him is a grave to visit.

Spending money other people don't have or may not wish to spend at Christmas doesn't exclude you from other misery or tragedy.
