Finally finished my christmas shopping and have added up everything ive spent on presents. 1 child, dont buy for siblings but plenty of neice and nephews and buy for some adults, partner, parents etc.. and its come to just under £900. I cant do that again next year. I need to plan better.

My child has accounted for 1/3 of the costs but i dont buy toys other than christmas birthdays.

Im sure it was around 600 last year. Has everyone elses christmas budgets took a hit

AIBU - too much and ridiculous
YANBU - its my money i can spend what i want

Surely it's relative to your income? £900 may be excessive to some, but may not be to some people.

Decent gadgets such as an ipad pro etc cost hundreds.

Some people cannot afford this for their children, but some people can.

Is this excessive if your bring home £5-10k per month?

I don't by the way, but its all relative to income.

Iamkmackered1979 · 08/12/2021 17:10

£30 for my mum for socks
I’ve no budget really I just can’t be bothered buying tat that my kids don’t want or need tbh
Am somewhat behind in present buying

JengaNonConfirming · 08/12/2021 17:14

I've spent about £1000, on adult daughter, partner, large family and some money towards food. Also planning to give daughter £500 towards her savings. I save all year so it's all budgeted for.

FrangipaniBlue · 08/12/2021 17:21

I don't think it matters what others have spent because it's all relative to earnings and what people can afford.

In our case, DH and I have spent the equivalent to one month of our combined wages.

Thegreencup · 08/12/2021 17:23

More than you have OP.

DH and I both have large families. It quickly all adds up.

flippertyop · 08/12/2021 17:29

60 each on in laws and patents
300 on DH
25 per niece nephew
About 500 per kid (x3)
We don't buy for DSis and dbs

I don't want anything

Sceptre86 · 08/12/2021 17:41

As long as you aren't in debt or living off of beans and toast till payday I would say it is fine. I spend £150-200 for each of my children for eid and I have 3. For niece's and nephews dh spends around £30 each and I spend between £20-100 each. I only otherwise buy for birthdays.

Sceptre86 · 08/12/2021 17:42

I spend £50 each on parents and siblings without kids. Those with kids I only buy for the children.

Iwantitthatway · 08/12/2021 17:44

Three children, my parents, my sister, my PIL and my SIL.

We’ve spent about £400. We never spend loads on parents/siblings now that we are all older, we got PIL a voucher for a visit to a vineyard with an afternoon tea and tour for £25 in the Black Friday sale! Our children are all toddlers so they haven’t hit the expensive present years yet, which definitely makes it easier.
We don’t really buy loads of extra food for Christmas as we spend it at parents house and tend to take a gammon/home made cake etc and thanks to high covid cases we’ve found a lot of Christmas activities cancelled this year so we’ve not spent much there either, we’ve mostly been doing things like Christmas light walks around where we live, a few Santas grottos etc

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

I hate these threads
Don't read them then. The op was clear in her title
Lurleene · 08/12/2021 18:04

I've spent £627 on presents so far and probably another £50 to go, that is for 13 people. I use an app to track my spending (Gift List) which is great as you can set a budget for each person and keep track of your budget.

WildStallyn · 08/12/2021 18:13

Usually we budget around £700 and stick to it. This year we're close to double that but one of the DC really wanted something specific that's very expensive but we can afford it at the moment and agree it would be useful for them. We will be very clear that it's a one off and they mustn't expect such a lot to be spent every Christmas.

MrsBerthaRochester · 08/12/2021 18:13

£175 per kid(3). Dont have much of a relationship with my family so no presents to buy there. Send my dad and stepmum a card. Spent £15 on my best friend which is a fiver above our agreed budget. Will give another couple of friends a card and a selection box for their kids.
So probably £600 all in? I have already got some bits in for xmas dinner, pate, crackers, cheese,a frozen dessert.
My youngest ds asked for a ps5 but he has no chance!

IncompleteSenten · 08/12/2021 18:16

I've spent about £700 or so on gifts this year.

You shouldn't feel bad. Its really fuck all to do with anyone else.

MrsKDB · 08/12/2021 18:27

£535

Two children (one teen, one tween), two nieces / nephews, DH, my parents, my assistant at work.

Could afford a lot more but absolutely HATE the consumerism. Gifts are not love.

Saz12 · 08/12/2021 18:33

Depends on what they want - DH usually doesn’t want anything so gets chocolate orange and socks. This year he wants a £580 gift (gulp), so his is ££££! DC has iPad last year, so v expensive, but this year the thing she’s desperately wanting is £40... so even with other nice gifts her total is much much less than last year.

We could spend more if we wanted to, but we’d be buying for the sake of it. DC is having bedroom decorated after Christmas and none of the bedding /curtains/ accessories will be part of her Christmas gift, mostly because I want to set a budget and have her help choose.

Food & drink will be come to lots though as we’re hosting quite a few people for a few days.

Agadorsparticus · 08/12/2021 18:38

I'm upto 900 with Xmas and 3 birthdays and have still a bit more to buy. We're on track and I've pretty much stuck to budget. At least we are not hosting.

Kennykenkencat · 08/12/2021 18:40

£0
I don’t even think about Christmas till Christmas Eve.
I hate shopping.

yoyo1234 · 08/12/2021 18:40

Circa £530 but lots more to come.

lljkk · 08/12/2021 18:40

DH bought adult DS some rum.... (16?)
I bought younger DSs some neck buffs (£6)

We are supposed to travel for Xmas and then wouldn't do any other gifts.

yoyo1234 · 08/12/2021 18:44

It is pointless. Most annoying is so much of the additional spend will not be on my DC but extended family.

toptomatoes · 08/12/2021 18:49

It’s the first time I’ve used a gift app this year and the total is quite alarming. I didn’t think we went that mad but we have a lot of people to buy for. We can afford it, so it’s fine, but it’s still a shock seeing the total!

yoyo1234 · 08/12/2021 18:52

Realised another £45 to add on to the circa £530

StarfishDish · 08/12/2021 18:55

About £80!

SleepingStandingUp · 08/12/2021 18:56

DS is around £125, poor DTwins is £100 between them.
£20 each for three nieces and two nephews. £10 each for two of their partners.

£20 for Dmom, £30for Ddad, £15 for DSM, £20 for dmil
DH will be about £80.

Other friends kids totalling about £60. School kids another £40.
£70 for siblings.

£670?

Lots of good quality second hand for my three
