Finally finished my christmas shopping and have added up everything ive spent on presents. 1 child, dont buy for siblings but plenty of neice and nephews and buy for some adults, partner, parents etc.. and its come to just under £900. I cant do that again next year. I need to plan better.

My child has accounted for 1/3 of the costs but i dont buy toys other than christmas birthdays.

Im sure it was around 600 last year. Has everyone elses christmas budgets took a hit

AIBU - too much and ridiculous
YANBU - its my money i can spend what i want

Probably £1k, and haven't finished yet. I spend £300 on DH, £150 each on our DDs, same with grandkids.

We can afford it though. For many years we couldn't, so I enjoy treating our family now we can.

Scotabroad24 · 08/12/2021 16:17

Between gifts for everyone probably about 400€. One DS, don't buy for nephew as lives abroad, bought for parents and DH and that's it.
Spent much more in previous years but I'm on extended mat leave so money is tight this year.

soapboxqueen · 08/12/2021 16:25

I have no idea

£1k on the kids though between them.

But as others have said, it's useless Comparing. We haven't always had the spare cash but now we do.

Helpstopthepain · 08/12/2021 16:27

I’ve spent a lot but I want to. I don’t have too, I want to.
I work hard and save throughout the year to be able to spend what I’ve spent.

Guacamole001 · 08/12/2021 16:29

£200 cash for ds. £30 extra for food £30 extra for drinks. Just me and ds pls a tenner on Xmas cards and stamps. So £270 all in. Won't buy myself anything as no need.

Fallagain · 08/12/2021 16:35

DD1 £390
DD2 £65
DH £160
My family £150 ish
DH family - I have no idea, but similar to my family I guess
gifts to teacher, volunteers ect £25
Plus panto, activities, crafts, PJs and new book for Christmas Eve.

Mammma91 · 08/12/2021 16:37

£220 on DS (£100 of that on tablet we had saved for)
All in on everyone else, about £300ish.
Feel sick at that figure.
Hate gift giving and the expectations.

Inmypjsagain · 08/12/2021 16:39

I don’t really want to add it up! Got my husband a coffee machine that was £1k alone, so it’s a fair amount when we include gifts for parents, in laws etc. I really enjoy buying gifts and we’ve always done big presents, but I would never go into debt for Christmas.

So I say YANBU, it’s your money, spend it how you like 😊 I think I’d only ever say it’s too much if you can’t afford it!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 08/12/2021 16:39

I buy from October onwards, as I'm on disability benefits
I have 3 adult DS's and I've spent £200 on each one
However they get no other presents
are hugely appreciative and it's a pleasure for me
Other than that I spend £15 on a gift for my friend

NotAshamedToFancyTheGrinch · 08/12/2021 16:40

The fact you've said, "I can't do this next year" suggests you can't afford it so Yabu. What age is your DC that you've managed to spend £300?

Bushkin · 08/12/2021 16:40

£260 on mum & dad
£300 on DC1
£250 on DC2
£100 on DH (not finished)
£60 on DSis
£100 on DN
£40 on BIL
£200 across 5 friends
£150 on other token presents eg nursery/cleaner/teacher

DH sorts the ILs

In short way too much, prob £1500ish plus food & days out etc

Bushkin · 08/12/2021 16:41

I don’t favour DC1 btw just the stuff DC2 wants happens to be cheaper as younger

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/12/2021 16:42

About £1k on DS. £40ish on parents. I'm single, only child and also only have one child so I literally just buy for DS, my mum and stepdad.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/12/2021 16:43

Includes a new bike that I bought on finance though so I've actually only spent £600ish cash and the bike was £390 on credit.

LagunaBubbles · 08/12/2021 16:44

About £200 on DH, £300 on DS1 who's 28 and his girlfriend, and my other boys aged 19 and 13, maybe about £600 each.

Forion · 08/12/2021 16:45

About £30 because I'm skint and as long as we've got a roast meal and the fire going we're not fixated on presents. Dh has spent a bit more than me on ds. Thankfully they're older so they'll understand.

Comedycook · 08/12/2021 16:46

Don't buy for adults. Tell your family you're just buying for kids and that you don't want them to get you anything either. They'll probably be relieved

PositiveLife · 08/12/2021 16:49

I've no idea how much it would add up to. However, I make it look more than it is by buying 'essentials' to bulk it out (shower gel, deodorant, socks, knickers, etc) and then I don't have to buy that through the year. I've also bought basic clothes (which I would end up buying anyway as they're growing).
In terms of genuine Xmas presents they've got some books and things. They knew to expect less this year because they had their bedrooms done and got a TV as part of that.

For other family, it's mostly token £5 gifts. A bit more on mum and dad, plus I've paid for a wheelchair for my mum too because they can't afford one on their basic state pensions Xmas Sad

Anordinarymum · 08/12/2021 16:50

Can someone explain to me why people feel the need to justify what they spend ?

NotAshamedToFancyTheGrinch · 08/12/2021 16:54

I've spent
£45 on DC (more than I was planning to spend but oh well)
£45 on dh
£28 on DM
£22.50 on dsister
£12.50 on dad

Dh in charge of buying for his parents. He usually spends £50 between them. I don't know what he's spent on me.

SnekkinOnDown · 08/12/2021 16:57

I've been to scared to add it up but I do spread it out over the entire year. . I've got two adult kids and two teens. I got my youngest a chrome book, Candle making kit, various bits and bobs. About £350. My other teen got lots of Lego and art supplies. About £350. My adult son got £150 of collectibles. My adult daughter got an air fry instapot and accessories so £150

Other people (DH, DSISx2, DM, DD, DNx3,DGS) about £300. Food and drink £300. Then I went and panic bought a ps5 and 5 games a few days ago as a whole family gift. Another £600.

So an eye watering £2.2k and that doesn't include what my DH has spent on me. But it does include all the food for 12 on Xmas Eve and Xmas day. Then a buffet for 25 Boxing Day.

MysweetAudrina · 08/12/2021 16:58

About 5000e between myself and dh. Kids are going to get some surprise on Christmas morning.

NotAshamedToFancyTheGrinch · 08/12/2021 16:58

@Anordinarymum

Can someone explain to me why people feel the need to justify what they spend ?
Good question. I don't know why I just felt the need to tell strangers how much money I spend 🤔
CraftyGin · 08/12/2021 17:01

I will probably spend around £200 (total) on five kids, 2 DILs and DH.

We send family gifts to DH's siblings, but no more than £100 total (and only because they send presents to us).

earsup · 08/12/2021 17:04

its your choice...i only buy for 2 friends and spend about 20 max...but do have 2 friends...a couple who spend £2000 on each others gifts...its awful...mountains of crap and tat that just ends up in the loft or shed.
