Why don't they taste like they used to ?! The last few packs I have tried taste pappy and sickly. I remember crumpets of old they were delicious ! Where am I going wrong ?!

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches Bloody hell, that's a coronary waiting to happen Grin

Laiste · 06/12/2021 17:00

What's a scotch pancake then? A pikelet?

Warbourtons here too. I did a bit of a test last year with lots of different brands and W were the best, but still they're not as nice as i remember.

Have they cut the salt down?

I grill under a gas grill, dark base, brown top, lots of butter lick butter puddles off plate

StormzyinaTCup · 06/12/2021 17:23

Pikelets aren’t the same thing you screaming psycho. Flatter.

🤣🤣🤣

MrsFin · 06/12/2021 17:23

I agree - good toasting is key. Put the toaster on high, and/or toast twice.

Definitely not advised as a daily, or even a weekly, treat!

caringcarer · 06/12/2021 17:29

Warburton's for me too and twice in toaster. I will eat Aldi Xmas tree 🌲 ones though.

Stroppypants · 06/12/2021 17:38

I have a very important question about the toasting twice - do you let them cool in between toasting? I need to know the specifics because I’m about to make a special trip to the shops just for crumpets. Xmas Grin

JudgeJ · 06/12/2021 17:46

@Luredbyapomegranate

They need to go in the toaster twice..

Try a few brands. The M n S ones are awful.

I never put crumpets in the toaster, I put them under a hot grill, they go brown and a bit crunchy. BTW, thanks, I now need a trip out to get some.
Laiste · 06/12/2021 17:57

There'll be a mysterious crumpet shortage this time tomorrow Grin

No, just toast them again straight away.
CatkinToadflax · 06/12/2021 18:01

Of course pikelets aren’t crumpets. They contain far less crump and more pike. Hence the different name! Hmm

I wonder if this is the difference. We didn't have a toaster as kids and crumpets and toast were amazing. All my adult life they've been somewhat disappointing and this could well be the reason 🤔

Growing up we only had an old gas cooker. It had a grill right at the top at head height. Was a bugger to light, you'd turn the gas on, stroke a match and try to get the had to light.. it wouldn't for a while and then it would with a mini explosion..

Made amazing toast and toasted teacakes and crumpets etc.

tallduckandhandsome · 06/12/2021 20:30

Asda do sourdough crumpets too. Haven’t tried them as I am meant to be low carbing, but losing the will imagining crumpets.

@ChangeChingyChange

Has to be Warburtons only for me, all the rest are horrible.
This!
knittingaddict · 06/12/2021 20:34

As others have said:
Twice in the toaster
Warburtons are the best
M and S are horrible
Lots of butter
Small spread of Marmite

guffaux · 06/12/2021 21:02

well toasted -so crispy bottom, dark toasty top, with a pot of warmed potted shrimp on top, including all the melted spiced butter, mmmmm

(having this at the weekend when we pick up our Booths order -cant get potted shrimp locally)
