Crumpets

Why don't they taste like they used to ?! The last few packs I have tried taste pappy and sickly. I remember crumpets of old they were delicious ! Where am I going wrong ?!

OP posts:
Oldraver · 05/12/2021 17:23

We always called them pikelets when younger but now realise there is a difference in size

I think even Warburtons are too doughy sometimes

DroopyClematis · 05/12/2021 17:26

Agree with others.

Warburtons only.
Plus a double dip in the toaster.

At the moment I'm preferring the sourdough ones as they have a nice flavour.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 05/12/2021 17:27

@WutheringShites86 Totally intentional!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 05/12/2021 17:28

Fab user name btw.

Livelifeinthebuslane · 05/12/2021 17:34

Toast for one and a half times until top crunchy (but smoke alarm still quiet)

Grin Excellent instruction!

ThinWomansBrain · 05/12/2021 17:40

I've sort of given up on crumpets recently as seem to be so pappy and tasteless. Bought a packet and threw them away the idea was so unappealing - but I used to love them.
The sourdough ones seem a bit better, and I had some seeded ones a while ago that were nice.
With some of the own brands, might be because the price has got really low? Something has to give.

Will give the 'double toasting" idea a try next time.

Soaked in egg and fried works well.

SunInMyEyes · 05/12/2021 17:41

I always add a little salt otherwise they're tasteless.

GrumpyTerrier · 05/12/2021 17:44

What is the difference between twice toasted and just toasted for longer?

DreamerSeven · 05/12/2021 17:46

Pikelets and crumpets are different things - pikelets are more like a scotch pancake with holes, crumpets are thicker and you get a much bigger area to hold melted butter. Agree on toast a lot longer than you think and use salted butter every time.

liveforsummer · 05/12/2021 17:47

@GrumpyTerrier

What is the difference between twice toasted and just toasted for longer?
According to a toast thread the other day it's because it lets some condensation escape
GiddyUpJingleHorse · 05/12/2021 17:51

Yes agree with others.. warburtons toasted twice

ChoporNot · 05/12/2021 18:08

I got some seeded ones (by mistake). Vile. How to suck ALL the joy out of crumpets.

Worst thing was I repeated the error a couple of weeks later (online order...they were in my "favourites" FFS).

Oilyoilyoilgob · 05/12/2021 18:14

They have to be double toasted, maybe double toasted plus another 20 seconds I find.
Then I like salted butter or peanut butter on them 😋

I tried the sourdough ones and I hated them, despite loving toasted sourdough bread.

ohlordabove · 05/12/2021 18:17

@Squareteabags

And they’re called pikelets
No they're not. Different things.
00100001 · 05/12/2021 18:25

Pikelets and crumpet are essentially the same things. You make batter and heat it on a pan.. crumpets are cooked in a ring, cook it without the ring...it's a pikelet.

00100001 · 05/12/2021 18:26

It's like saying a fried egg cooked in a heart shaped mould isn't the same as fried egg cooked in a pan without a mould...

MissyB1 · 05/12/2021 18:29

Sourdough crumpets only for me these days, the rest are horrible.

iklboodolphrednosedpaindear · 05/12/2021 18:52

Pikelets aren't crumpets. Pancakes & Yorkshire puddings have essentially the same batter. They aren't the same either. It's not just about how they're cooked.

sansucre · 05/12/2021 19:05

I find the cheaper the crumpet, the better it is. I only go to Tesco to buy their own brand cheap crumpets. They are the only crumpets that taste remotely like crumpets should. I double toast them, let them cool a little than smother with proper french unsalted butter. Heaven.

whywouldntyou · 05/12/2021 19:16

@ChangeChingyChange

Has to be Warburtons only for me, all the rest are horrible.
This, and on the maximum setting on the toaster so the bottom is HARD and the top quite brown. Mmmmmm then half a pack of butter on each. This could be why I'll never see a size 16 again...
iklboodolphrednosedpaindear · 05/12/2021 19:24

Agree Warburtons are the best. The normal sized ones, not the giant ones. When DS was younger he & I had 'secret crumpet club' where we'd eat them in bed watching TV when DH was at work. DH knew all about it, but DS thought it was our little club ☺️

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/12/2021 19:36

@Squareteabags

And they’re called pikelets
Pikelets aren’t the same thing you screaming psycho. Flatter.

OP - once you have shunned M n S in favour of Warburtons, preheated your toaster, and cooked them twice..

YOU NEED TO TRY THIS - butter, marmite, philly - it’s a glorious hold/cold, creamy/salty combo.. food of the GODS

Also butter + poached eggs (yoke runs into holes), as well as ye traditional golden syrup or honey

Almostmenopausal · 05/12/2021 19:38

@Mittenmob

Agree Warburton's only, m&s are the worst. More butter than you could possibly imagine
I'd say Lidl are the WORST! 🤮
DramaAlpaca · 05/12/2021 19:40

I hadn't seen crumpets since I moved to Ireland and I missed them so much. Then I spotted own brand ones in Tesco and there was much excitement! They need to go in the toaster twice or be done under the grill until their bottoms are crispy. Then slathered with butter. Yum.

TheHateIsNotGood · 05/12/2021 19:51

I think drama has nailed it with "cook under the grill", which is how crumpets used to be done not so long ago and why they don't taste the same from a toaster, even toasted twice.

They need to be toasted under the grill and turned twice, if not 3 times, to make sure both sides are 'toasted' twice.

Which is why I moved to Muffins (English), much easier if you just want to use a Toaster - but maybe I now need to go get some crumpets tomorrow (thanks OP).
