Why don't they taste like they used to ?! The last few packs I have tried taste pappy and sickly. I remember crumpets of old they were delicious ! Where am I going wrong ?!

@00100001

Soft boiled eggs and poached eggs are the same, yes.
Ok you’ve really gone too far this time.
HalfWomanHalfMincePie · 06/12/2021 09:03

Mmmmm a 'trilogy of crumpet'...

One with just butter (the starter), one with butter and peanut butter (the main course) and one with butter and jam (dessert).

I rarely buy them to prevent myself living on this and this only Xmas Grin

TuftyMarmoset · 06/12/2021 09:06

Another one saying Warburtons and toasted twice! The Lidl ones are nowhere near as nice but fortunately they sell the 9 packs of warburtons.
They have to be toasted so the bottom is crisp. I sometimes use the bagel setting on my toaster for the second toasting to avoid burning the top.

TeaAndStrumpets · 06/12/2021 09:16

Those skinny things aren't the pikelets I knew growing up! Lincolnshire, if it helps.

@00100001

Soft boiled eggs and poached eggs are the same, yes.
Really?

So you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between soft boiled egg with soldiers and poached egg on toast. Because they're identical, right?

Because I don't know a single person who would mistake a boiled egg and soldiers for a poached egg on toast! Because, despite having the same ingredients, they are different!

You're making yourself look rather silly now!

Warbutons crumpets toasted till they are crispy smothered in butter and a bit of strawberry jam 😍

@HalfWomanHalfMincePie What an amazing combo. I am heading out to buy some crumpets right now and having the Trilogy for lunch! Grin

@ChangeChingyChange

Has to be Warburtons only for me, all the rest are horrible.
Me too, Warburtons are the best. Unless they are available, I don’t but any, the supermarket own versions taste so weird, bitter and horrible.
HalfWomanHalfMincePie · 06/12/2021 09:42

@KloppsTeeth I am convinced this is why crumpets are sold in divisions of 3!

InTheLabyrinth · 06/12/2021 10:22

To whoever asked why double toasting not toasting for longer: toaster dial is ery for perfect toast brownness. If you move the dial, toast won't be the right colour for the next few people. Cooking crumpets twice prevents burnt/anemic toast issues.

Hobbesmanc · 06/12/2021 10:31

Crumpets- one of the few products where supermarket basic versions are better than the finest ones- all those sour dough ones are flabby and they dont drip butter at every bite. Warbies will do at a pinch but they need to be almost charred at the edges

@HalfWomanHalfMincePie It’s a Christmas miracle! Giant crumpets now in packs of three Grin I think your theory is right.

Crumpets
SantasGoodLittleGirl · 06/12/2021 14:28

Warburtons, double-toasted. Eat dry or add butter. Add a tiny amount of honey, too. Not that I would, obviously.

Roominmyhouse · 06/12/2021 14:33

I had crumpets for lunch, just sainsburys own brand but I always cook them under the grill so they are nice and crispy on the outside then smothered in butter. Yum!

Pikelets are definitely different but also delish!

VanGoghsDog · 06/12/2021 14:35

@TyrannosaurusRights

The sourdough ones seem better. Harder to find though.
Yes, these. Waitrose do them.

Yes same here!
WhenSepEnds · 06/12/2021 14:48

Never knew about the double toasting, def going to try this!

AdmiralCain · 06/12/2021 15:05

Drowning In Guernsey Butter is the trick.

1forAll74 · 06/12/2021 15:08

Pikelets are larger and flatter than crumpets. I can't seem to find pikelets in Hertfordshire, but they were sold all over further up North, especially in Staffordshire !

2catsandhappy · 06/12/2021 15:27

Mmmmm I do like some well toasted crumpets with my butter.

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 06/12/2021 15:36

Agree with pp who said the cheaper thinner ones are best

FangsForTheMemory · 06/12/2021 15:49

I think pikelets are Scottish.

A crumpet isn't a crumpet unless it has a proper doughy texture. A cakey crumpet is not a real crumpet.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/12/2021 15:54

Warburtons crumpet toasted twice and buttered on both sides.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/12/2021 15:55

Crumpets is my favourite UK food that I never had growing up in Ireland.
