Why don't they taste like they used to ?! The last few packs I have tried taste pappy and sickly. I remember crumpets of old they were delicious ! Where am I going wrong ?!

Pikelets aren't crumpets. Pancakes & Yorkshire puddings have essentially the same batter. They aren't the same either. It's not just about how they're cooked.
Whilst pancakes and Yorkshire puddings have the same batter. One is fried, the other is baked.

Pikelets and crumpets are the same, they're cooked the same way, with the exception of one of them has batter poured into a ring which keeps a shape and therefore makes them thicker.

They're the same!

00100001 · 05/12/2021 20:03

Is an egg fried in a mould different to an egg fried without a mould?

No. They're the same.

So pikelets and crumpets are the same!

NannyR · 05/12/2021 20:11

I suppose they are intrinsically the same in that they are made of the same mixture and cooked the same way, but they look different and have a commonly used different name. Along the same lines, bread is made of dough and baked, but if it's a small individual portion it's a roll/bap/teacake and a larger one is called a loaf, you wouldn't say both products were the same thing.

@Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese

Tesco own brand are pretty good, but definitely double toast and real butter.
I can't have these in the house.

They are like crack to me.

Toasted hard, drenched in butter, topped with Gouda cheese.

So delicious.

arcticfoxed · 05/12/2021 20:33

Wait, people preheat toasters?!

Looubylou · 05/12/2021 20:34

I have no idea how I liked crumpets as a child. It's like eating a sponge

That's bit quite the same analogy.

The pikelets/crumpets is the same as if you made 800g of bread dough, and put 400g in a tin, and the other 400g you shaped by hand into a round loaf and put on a tray to bake.

They're the same. Just look slightly different.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/12/2021 20:56

It makes a difference how they're cooked. Thin, flatter version has a different texture in the middle from the thicker version with a smaller diameter.

Anyway, thanks to this thread I've just nipped back onto my next delivery and added Warburton's crumpets and butter. I had been planning to be very strict with myself this week in advance of Christmas, sigh. I have the willpower of a toddler.

VestaTilley · 05/12/2021 21:18

Like a PP, I always toast them twice, and slather them in salted butter.

Nomorecoco · 05/12/2021 21:48

Crumpets make me dizzy and instantly EXHAUSTED, zero idea why.
Anyway, I know what you mean, if I do have them, they have to be really toasted like others have said, a bit crispy. Then they taste right.

Sirzy · 05/12/2021 21:50

Asda’s own crumpets, twice in the toaster. Lots of butter!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/12/2021 21:53

If you think standard crumpets taste ropey, you haven't tried the abominations that are gluten free ones. No amount of butter, salt, GF Yeast Extract and Cheddar can make those remotely palatable.

Is a boiled egg with soldiers the same as poached egg on toast?

They both egg, boiled in water with toast and butter. One has been cooked in its shell, one has been cooked out of the shell.

They are different.

Pikelets and crumpets are different. Same ingredients, yes, but cooking them differently makes them different.

You have a very mild gluten intolerance I think.

Loads of people do.

Nothing serious but when it hits it can hit very hard.

Sliced supermarket white pan that my kids like, does this to me.

It's like I have been hit by a bus for about 30-60 minutes and can barely keep my eyes open.

Then it passes.

It's surprisingly common. It only became an issue for me in the past 20 years.

Some gluten foods don't bother me but white bread hits hard.

I don't eat bread that often as a result, but that makes the affect stronger I think when I do.

justasking111 · 05/12/2021 23:04

I've given up on them this year the texture and taste is just yucky. Eating English muffins or toast now.

Billandben444 · 05/12/2021 23:07

I've just watched Jamie Oliver fry Bloody Mary crumpets - they looked beyond revolting.

I couldn't agree more. No matter how appalling other posters think they are, I'm pretty sure I'd dissolve from pleasure if I were able to eat an M&S/Aldi crumpet, having experienced Genius gluten-free crumpets (Warburton's gluten-free are slightly better, but in an "only extremely disappointing, rather than actively revolting" kind of way).
Ponoka7 · 05/12/2021 23:18

Pikelets are closer to pancakes than crumpets. Traditionally crumpets would have a raising agent, pikelets didn't. Different ingredients, different product. But yes to Warburtons, second toasting and salted butter. I'd top pikelets the same as pancakes.

00100001 · 06/12/2021 08:30

Soft boiled eggs and poached eggs are the same, yes.

TroysMammy · 06/12/2021 08:45

@BettyfromBristol melt some cheese on your marmited crumpets, delicious.

KeepYaHeadUp · 06/12/2021 08:53

People saying pikelets and crumpets are the same - you're plain wrong. Sometimes I fancy a pikelet, other times i fancy a crumpet. They scratch a different itch and so cannot be the same thing.

KeepYaHeadUp · 06/12/2021 08:54

My crumpets arriving in tomorrow's shop better not be out of bloody stock thanks to this thread.

HalfWomanHalfMincePie · 06/12/2021 08:57

@TyrannosaurusRights

The sourdough ones seem better. Harder to find though.
Came to say this. The sourdough ones are far, far better.

More robust Grin

dropitlikeitsloth · 06/12/2021 08:58

And they’re called pikelets

Nooo pike let’s are flat like those little American pancakes, not the same thing!

I present the below evidence 🤣

I love how all of the advice on here is to toast the hell out of them, I hate well toasted crumpets and like them when they're hot but still soft, yummmm.
