To wonder why do few girls have short hair nowadays

That’s it really. When I was at high school (80s), half the girls had short hair. However, I can only think of one girl my DDs (who have long hair) have known through school who had short hair and she has long hair now. When did short hair fall out of favour?

I suppose it's better than a combover?

@Idontwana

My bad. Very true, in the same way most transwoman will have long hair 😬

Paperplain · 07/12/2021 21:18

My 13 yo DD has just had her long very curly hair cut into a pixie cut and it's amazing. She stands out (in a good way!) and lots her friends are now following suit. It's really interesting to see.

kowari · 07/12/2021 21:47

@Starcup
Transmen are female people and transwoman are male people.

Yes, I’m aware of that fact, that’s why I corrected myself in my last post….

I had my hair cut short into a wedge in the early 80s because it was very fashionable. As a child in the 70s I wasn't allowed to cut my waist length hair and was desperate for a short 'Purdy' like the cool girls. Now in my 50s its long again because it suits me so much better. Long hair will always be popular because when it's healthy its just so beautiful. Unfortunately after a certain age and years of styling it can be difficult to grow and maintain, which is maybe why it seems a fashion for the young.

@Starcup

Long hair is a sign of femininity generally. How many transmen would have short cropped hair? The ones portrayed in the media etc mostly have long hair, because they know that’s one key feature that distinguishes males from females.
And they are often slated for adopting stereotypical femininity.
WalkingOnTheCracks · 08/12/2021 10:22

I like long hair, regardless of gender. I don’t associate it with femininity. Since I retired, I’ve let mine grow, shoulder length and almost white. My wife and daughters approve, so I don’t think they associate it with feminity either.

Personally, I’d rather go to the dentist’s than the hairdresser’s.

Skysblue · 08/12/2021 11:31

I think it’s so funny how hair fashions change. My gran’s generation all had short very curly hair and thought long straight hair was ‘flat’ and depressing. Then the 80s it was the bigger the better. Now everyone wants super straight hair and when I try to tell my hairdresser that I actually like my wavy hair she looks at me like I’m mad and blow dries it straight anyway.

KrispyKale · 08/12/2021 11:32

My gran would roar "get that hair cut, it looks awful!"
Bobbed hair was where it was at.😂

mrsdaltongrant · 08/12/2021 11:35

I have two DCs in primary. Neither have asked to have their hair cut and tbh I'd rather they didn't until they are teens.

I had my hair cut in primary and it ruined the shape of it (long curly) and its never been the same.

That being said the face shapes of my girls and the wavy nature I'm not sure it would look "right" for them to have bobs anyway.

There are a few girls with shorter cuts, they've got quite straight hair and it looks great though.

randomsabreuse · 08/12/2021 13:00

I tried a Bob once (wavy long hair). Looked like James May apart from on the way home from the hairdresser. Not doing that again...

GreenWhiteViolet · 08/12/2021 13:14

I had very long hair as a little girl in the 90s, as did most in my class. At the age of 12 I decided I wanted a bob. My mother cried (!) over it, but thankfully realised that it was my hair and something harmless for me to make decisions about.

The bob really didn't suit my face shape! I grew it out and have had long hair ever since.

I do think it's mostly about fashion. Some people will have a strong preference for either short or long hair, but the rest will go along with what the people around them think is stylish or popular.

Eh?

slobberydog · 08/12/2021 17:55

DS cut DD's curly hair when she was 3 and he was 5. The curls never returned.
I don't understand how but that was the fact of it
Was furious with DH. I'd left him in charge while I popped out on a Saturday afternoon. He tuned I to the rugby not the fact his son was scalping his daughter with a pair of huge kitchen scissors. They were playing hairdressers. Both had fun but shheeeshhh!

Because alot of us as kids were forced into tragic home done short styles for school and as weve grown up we've decided to never ever put our own girls through that horrific fringe and bowl cut 🤣 . many girls did have short hair when I was young but I don't remember any of them A asking for it or B liking it. Kids kind of have more choices now when it comes to styles if clothing and hair again for the same reasons. Plus social media/peer pressure/ popularity/covid nonsense where hairdressers were closed blah blah blah

So true, I still haven't forgiven my dm getting the home hairdresser to cut my hair shorter, no mirror when I was trying to grow it

Spot On 😂.
MammaMacgill87 · 12/12/2021 17:06

I got landed with Janet next door who'd 'been on a hair dressing course' Who cut my hair outside on the front drive in summer right before I started high school. I spent two years looking like a reject from the beetles and crying myself to sleep every night 😂 Ironically I now have a completely shaved head and have done for years hahah

Ceramide · 13/12/2021 10:07

Long hair is a sign of femininity generally.

How did this come about in the first place? In Roman times, short hair was associated with being a 'civilised' man, but at the same time the Vikings considered it to signify a slave.

HopefulHetty · 13/12/2021 10:42

It's not a universal symbol of femininity. You'd have to have an extremely blinkered view of history and cultures to think that.

Bubblecap · 13/12/2021 11:08

I was a teen in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s I remember distinct tribes at school. The Punks, rockabillys, mods, goths, new romantics and new wavers. I used to wear Fredy Perry tops with drainpipes and had long hair to my waist and a heavy fringe an oversized duffel coat and traditional school satchel worn like a messenger bag. Was heavily in to ska and new wave. I also wore ex military clothing bought from army surplus. I still wear combats in my fifties. There was a huge range of hairstyles when I was a teen, two of my friends went the way of punk. I remember going to Camden market when I was 15, I winder if she has any if her original punk stuff, sells for a bomb now. My goodness it was a great time to be alive.

People wanted to be different they actually ended up being part of a tribe with its own style so all a bit the same within their chosen tribe but now everyone seems totally the same.

It is now in Britain.
BaconAndAvocado · 13/12/2021 11:16

I too grew up in the 80s and had the obligatory Lady Di wedge cut.
I loved it when I came out of the hairdressers but never got it back to looking this same at home!

I don’t think any of my 13 yo DD’s friends have short hair. The most popular hair seems to be very long and straight.
