To wonder why do few girls have short hair nowadays

That’s it really. When I was at high school (80s), half the girls had short hair. However, I can only think of one girl my DDs (who have long hair) have known through school who had short hair and she has long hair now. When did short hair fall out of favour?

People have let their hair grow long throughout most if history. It's just what happens when you don't cut it.
A more interesting question to ask is why people find the need to cut it short , in different styles, use hair products, straighteners etc.

@CounsellorTroi

Iwas just looking at an old school photo c1969. Roughly half the girls had short hair and half long.
A school photo of mine from 1982 when. We were all 16 shows the vast majority with short hair. Maybe we were all in the thrall of the Lady Di cut?

I was in an exam hall full of year 11 students today. The only girl without long hair (and hers was bobbed, not cropped etc) was the one who identifies as non-binary. Definitely fewer had the orange make-up/fake tan, uber-straightened silvery blond hair look which they all had a couple of years ago though. Lots of natural long, brown wavy or at least non-straightened hair.

KrispyKale · 07/12/2021 18:02

The longer Laura Ashley style was a nostalgia-led fashion that my older working class family just weren't feeling at all! My older girl cousins did grow their hair longer and now that age group on have a mix of lengths. The teen and twenty something young women all have long hair, not even a bob.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 07/12/2021 18:03

I’d love to know what people said about hair that got their posts deleted.

(Don’t tell me, obviously.)

trickytrudy · 07/12/2021 18:06

I had a bob cut when I was 18 (23 years ago), it had always been shoulder length. Ever since I've gone from pixie crop to a bit longer (never really past my ears) and back again. It has never occurred to me to grow it long.

thewhatsit · 07/12/2021 18:12

I wish I had short hair but every time I cut it shorter I realise I don’t look that good with it short and I grow it long again (and then start fantasising about short hair). I am desperately trying to find a length/ style that I can have it now that I can just keep it at for the long term and will take me through my 40s/50s.

Even Diana’s 80s hair wasn’t actually that nice.

In my unstylish eyes that sounds like (good) progress.

My DD has short hair now - used to be long though! She can really carry off the shorter style though.,

It makes me laugh that someone who has to go to the hairdresser every 8 weeks for an expensive cut and needs to wash it, dry it and use product daily thinks their hair isn't high maintenance.

I wash my hair twice a week. Shampoo, condition, comb, towel dry, leave an hour while I get on with other things and then roughly blow dry for 2 minutes. That's it. Twice a week. No expensive cut, no product, no daily styling. I get it cut maybe every six months at a cheap hairdresser, but I can go much longer between cuts if I need to because it doesn't look crap or messy if it gets a bit long. That's low maintenance.

I do similar to my short hair, twice a week wash, towel dry, brush, minus the blow dry. No product. I do get it cut frequently but it's not an expensive cut, £14. I see that as low maintenance.

I'm a bit torn tbh. I don't like the thought of societal expectations placed on women, but I do fancy guys that put a lot of effort into their appearance. Broad shoulders but slim waist, ideally with a hard stomach/abs. Nice biceps/triceps.

To get all the above requires much more effort than women usually put into their appearance. We're talking a few years of proper training and diet 100% locked in. It's why so many blokes use steroids.

Yes. It was only because I was looking around to see how few had short hair as a result of this thread that I then noticed the reduction in the numbersof girls with that particular look. I mean... fashion is fashion and they can look how they want. But when fashion goes back towards a more natural look, I can't help but see that as a positive.

Really? Counting the daily hair, face treatment and make-up routines, the hair removal, the dieting, the salon trips, gel nails etc? And for many an exercise routine too.

Admittedly I don't know any men who go for the look you describe (which I'm not a fan of tbh) or who spend much time on such things.

I reckon generally speaking.

Most of these types of guys remove their chest and back hair etc too. Obv don't do the cosmetics routine but we're talking 4-5 sessions in the gym a week. My partner trains 4x a week and each session is roughly a two hour round trip.

EightWheelGirl · 07/12/2021 20:22

He also used periodisation (I think it's called) training where you increase the weight by certain % at particular intervals to slowly build strength without overloading the central nervous system and affecting recovery. Every few weeks he alternates between higher rep training and lower reps with heavier weight, which is a quite common approach. He has it all on spreadsheets.

Long hair is a sign of femininity generally. How many transmen would have short cropped hair? The ones portrayed in the media etc mostly have long hair, because they know that’s one key feature that distinguishes males from females.

KrispyKale · 07/12/2021 20:31

It isn't a sign of femininity in my head. It may be in yours.🤷

You’ve hit the nail on the head…. It is a sign of femininity in my head’. I totally appreciate that’s not the case for everyone, but I’d bet my house in the fact that it’s the sign of femininity for most people.
thecatsthecats · 07/12/2021 20:39

@FuckinGoddess

This is the fashion these days. Also, as a PP said, shorter hairstyles are unforgiving. You need a good bone structure to pull off short hair.
Which is why it's so surprising that so many men wander around looking like Mr Potatohead with their number 1 cuts.

I'm firmly of the opinion that most people look better with longer hair (not LONG - but longer) for this exact reason.

Starcup · 07/12/2021 20:39

Most men don’t have long hair….. and most women don’t have short hair….

KrispyKale · 07/12/2021 20:41

Yes but growing up everyone in my family has short hair, every adult I knew pretty much had shortish hair.🤷

KrispyKale · 07/12/2021 20:42

We had a photo of my grandad as a boy with curls and in a dress.😂

Theunamedcat · 07/12/2021 20:44

My dd has short hair her brothers is long

This is so true, I created a tinder profile earlier and there are lots of mr potato heads on there. Maybe it's an age thing, they are often going bald by 40.
