To wonder why do few girls have short hair nowadays

That’s it really. When I was at high school (80s), half the girls had short hair. However, I can only think of one girl my DDs (who have long hair) have known through school who had short hair and she has long hair now. When did short hair fall out of favour?

@PomegranateQueen

I was having this discussion with my DM the other day, she would have been in her late teens in the early 80s and she and many of her peers still had to wash their hair in the bath with a jug because they didn't have a shower yet. Short hair in those circumstances would be much more practical.
Ah yes-that lovely moment when you feel your hair going down the plug holeGrin

Some of you lot are a disgrace. Leave the girls alone to make their own decisions on how they want their own hair FFS. I've seen "long, straight hair is boring", "they're like clones", "trying to attract boys", not to mention some of the competitive low maintenance types who see themselves as somehow superior for not brushing their hair or wearing make up! When I take my DD11 to the hairdresser as they ask me how much to cut off I always say to ask her as it's not my hair. Stop judging girls on the way they look, whether that's long hair, short hair, full make up, hairy pits, whatever.

I have hair down to my lower back and still wash my hair in the bath with a jug! We do have a shower but the shower makes my hair dry.

I think long hair is beautiful and I wish my mum didn't cut mine off all the time when I was a kid. My daughter has gorgeous long hair (although she hates brushing it Shock)

"I have hair down to my lower back and still wash my hair in the bath with a jug! We do have a shower but the shower makes my hair dry."

How?

LittleGwyneth · 06/12/2021 14:57

I was at secondary school in the 00s (2003-2010) and not one single person in my year had short hair.

"I have hair down to my lower back and still wash my hair in the bath with a jug! We do have a shower but the shower makes my hair dry."

How?

It’s the shower spray, it makes my hair like straw.

Slightly better in soft water areas, but even in soft water areas I prefer to wash with a jug in the bath.

I have seen people report similar so it seems to be a thing for some.

diddl · 06/12/2021 15:56

"It’s the shower spray, it makes my hair like straw."

But the same water from a jug doesn't?

That's strange!

liveforsummer · 06/12/2021 17:29

Fashion but more importantly ease. A short style that you can't tie back is far harder to maintain on a daily basis

OldTotty · 06/12/2021 17:38

@hangrylady

I'm with you. My daughter is non binary and is sporting a green short back and sides, curly on top. Looks like a Brussel sprout to me but hey, not my business she is 18. However people do say rude things in the Street which upsets her.

Starcup · 06/12/2021 17:44

Longer hair looks more feminine and most women want to appear more feminine.

TheRemotePart · 06/12/2021 17:44

Christ everyone at my school had short hair, in the 90s! regardless of whether it suited them or not!
Lots of spiky bad “call the manager “ ‘dos Grin
Hellish. Wee 50 year old ladies hairs on 14 year olds Grin
I think they thought they’d look like Natalie imbruglia

PearlyShamps · 06/12/2021 17:46

Two words - Lady Di

DanceItOut · 06/12/2021 17:47

There’s several girls in my son’s class with short hair aged 12-13 and there’s several in my daughters class aged 9-10. Not as many as half but a good handful in each of their classes.

PearlyShamps · 06/12/2021 17:49

To clarify... I think short cuts were popular in the 80s largely due to the influence of Lady Di... I asked for the cut myself!

I do NOT mean that Diana is the reason that there are fewer short styles seen on girls today Wink

Lunificent · 06/12/2021 17:50

I had shortish hair in the mid 80s and a massive flick. It looked dreadful as my hair was thick and curly. I grew it out in the summer I went to university - 1988 and as far as I can remember that coincided with the fashion for short hair ending and never coming back. So that’s 33 years, a really long time.
I’ll be interested to see if short hair comes back now that culturally (for young girls) it is really only associated with being non binary or trans.

Echobelly · 06/12/2021 17:54

Definitely up to mid 80s, short hair was often seen as 'sensible' and 'smart', probably much to some girls' chagrin, but then some time in 90s the 'pretty princess' thing took over.

I had cropped hair by choice most of the time from age 8 in mid 80s until my mid 30s. Having it totally cropped like I did wasn't that common, but quite a lot of girls did have short bobs/pageboys. DD also decided to have cropped hair at that age and was a total outlier. I don't think a single girl in her year had hair shorter than shoulder length. That said, by the time she left primary I think she'd been a bit of a trendsetter and a few more girls have very short hair.

keffie12 · 06/12/2021 17:57

I have long hair. I'm 60 look 48 I'm told, average. Yep look after myself plus fortune of genetics too, through my parents.

I refuse to have my hair short cos fashion wasn't really understood by my parents. I was a 70s teen where everything was wild.

I had various struggles with them in my teens. They were alot older when I was born so didn't get it especially as school didn't enforce uniform

So long hair here as there is so much more you can do with it too

maddiemookins16mum · 06/12/2021 18:25

@generalh

I have short hair but then I am 55!
Me too, at 57. It suits me (and my glasses). I’m like a strawberry blonde Sue Perkins.
FanGirlX · 06/12/2021 18:28

@PearlyShamps

Two words - Lady Di
Yep - Lady / Princess Di. Fully responsible for hotbrushed crops and shoulder pads 😂
WeatherwaxOn · 06/12/2021 18:29

I find short hair easier to manage but mine grows fast and I'd be getting it cut every fortnight.
Same for my DC.
DC has a friend who had all her hair cut really short. It looks amazing. Unfortunately some of the less pleasant kids at school keep saying "are you a boy?' but not in a kind, or curious way.

Yehbut · 06/12/2021 18:30

All female footballers have pony tails to a woman meaning they all have long hair. Odd I agree. You’d think being sportswomen they would enjoy having short hair. I had long hair in plaits till I was 13 and allowed to have it cut. My granddaughters have never had short hair and also have plaits. My daughter never had long hair as a child always jaw length but now has long hair. Sexual stereotypes are more prevalent now it seems. Which is a shame.

diddl · 06/12/2021 18:41

"Sexual stereotypes are more prevalent now it seems."

Or maybe women who want long hair feel that they can have long hair at whatever age they want?

pollymere · 06/12/2021 18:42

Most of the girls I know with short hair get mistaken for boys. I had a shop assistant horrified I was pushing flowery sandals on my son. The Pixie cut is very fashionable for both genders and everything in between at the moment. I think there is a trend for long straight hair at the extreme end of the gender spectrum but I think everything has gone androgynous to be honest.

disconnected101 · 06/12/2021 18:46

Trends. Look at women's hair in the late 60s/70s. all long & hippyish.
80s, as someone said, was off the back of punk.
Watch the reruns of TOTP. It's interesting to see all the fresh faced fashion-unconcious unself-conscious kids in the crowd.
The hairstyles are such a marker of the times!
They're currently around 1991 & late 80s early 90s episodes were perm-city
