To wonder why do few girls have short hair nowadays

That’s it really. When I was at high school (80s), half the girls had short hair. However, I can only think of one girl my DDs (who have long hair) have known through school who had short hair and she has long hair now. When did short hair fall out of favour?

That's weird as almost every girl/woman I know has short hair including myself.
My 3 nieces and my daughter aged between 3-14 and 2 of my sisters. All have short hair
Also seems to be all the rage with the 30 somethings at the school gates... Smile

I’ve always had short hair. During lock down I decided to try and grow it long- for the first time. I’m loving it, feel I look more feminine and am able put it up. I’m 72.

Durbeyfield · 06/12/2021 18:57

I’ve wondered the same thing OP. Short hair was very much the norm in the 80’s.

notoldjustpastyoung · 06/12/2021 19:03

Heard of the word, fashihon, or it's the trend. It'll change eventually. They like to look the same.

In my case, rebellion against my mother. She is of the generation of women who cut their hair short after having children. She never stops banging on about how women over 40 should cut their hair short, offers to pay for my sis and I to go to her hairdresser for a "smart" crop. Both my sis and I keep our hair longish in response. We also weren't allowed long hair as children, so that's part of it.

There is definitely a generational thing to the long v short hair debate but just do what suits you / what you like. I get irritated with my mother going on about how I should cut my longish hair because my hair is fuck all to do with her.

I know what you mean

I think female footballers have long hair because it’s far easier to tie it back during matches. Imagine having to style your hair before playing sport!

What do the short haired men do?

@PlasticPlantsDontDie

I would say it’s all to do with the Rachel Haircut in Friends.

Before then women had a variety of styles; curly, short, bobs, etc. Even at the beginning of Friends you can see this in the hairstyles of Monica (short bob), Phoebe (curly) and many of the extras. Kylie, Madonna all had curly or shortish hair in bedhead styles.

But then Rachel had her hair straightened in the 2nd/3rd episode and it became a cultural phenomenon. Even Phoebe with her boho vibe ended up with straight hair.

Messy was out and sleekness was in. Curly hair was suppressed.

The End

Yep. Straighteners and silicones, the end.

I don’t think screen- age kids do ‘edgy’ anymore. They appear to live life through their phones and hence live in outsized clothes and low maintenance hair. Real life for them is online not out in the real world.

Ddot · 06/12/2021 19:49

Short hair is hard work

kowari · 06/12/2021 20:12

@Ddot

Short hair is hard work
For some. Long hair is hard work for some.

The hardest work I have to do is walk in to the barbers every 6 weeks. The rest is much much easier than when I had long hair.

ThistleTits · 06/12/2021 21:09

@MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry

Fwiw I’ve had long hair all my life but decided to cut it all off in the summer as my hair was just so much hassle. I hated having to wash it, dry it, do anything with it and when I didn’t do anything (which was most of the time) it was just scraped back in a bobble and looked shit. So it in cut it and I love it now. It is zero maintenance. I wash and go.
Snap. I done the same last year.

What's edgy?

And let's not forget school age kids can't stray too much from the norm given how strict some schools are on uniform and appearance. Their parents are less likely to give in as well if a bit of edginess is costing them a detention or what not. We had letters about the wrong type of plimsoles, girls wearing black socks instead of brown ,white or cream and loads of other bollocks.

As long as we pray to the uniform Gods , because they're so fucking awesome, we can't judge kids for being less "edgy".

KrystalKendal · 06/12/2021 21:25

It's hard work & different trends but mainly, it's hard work. You have to style short hair and long hair is easier to look after!

EightWheelGirl · 06/12/2021 21:34

I don't think it looks good on many women tbh, and those that do are usually either very attractive or have the elfin features that suit it. I think an average looking woman can look pretty attractive if dressed well and with long silky hair, but in most cases a short cut won't boost their attractiveness.

I feel the same about shaved heads with men. Only the really hunky can pull it off.

gofg · 06/12/2021 21:48

Have you had a good look around - how many actually have "long silky hair"? I couldn't care less whether women have long or short hair, but I'm sick of all this rubbish about how the majority of women don't suit short hair (and yet those with long hair tied back somehow look okay? Several times I have thought someone had short hair only to find it was actually either tied back or up, so in actual fact they looked just like they would have with short hair), and also how hard it is to style. What styling does really short hair need - I just get up and go, I wash it once or twice a week, I don't own a brush or styling tools, it literally couldn't be easier. I also see people with long hair which drags down their face, and people with thin hair which really doesn't look great long - and yet there is this weird notion that ALL long hair looks lovely, and it suits everyone???

Long hair can look lovely, but so many only go to the hairdresser once a year - and we can tell. They tie it back when it needs washing - we can tell it needs washing, you aren't fooling anyone. Long hair, well maintained can look gorgeous, but if it's not then it can look awful. I also know several women who look stunning with short hair, and average with long.

Why do we need 18 pages of discussion about hair length? Some like long hair, some like short - end of . The amusing thing is, if celebrities and influencers suddenly all cut their hair short there would be a mad dash to the hairdressers!

GladAllOver · 06/12/2021 22:01

I've always had long hair since childhood, through various fashion changes. It's easy to look after and I must have saved thousands from not going to hairdressers.

Fomofo · 06/12/2021 22:05

I know plenty of 'edgy' screen age kids

SoupDragon · 06/12/2021 22:41

Just like hair of any length.

BestZebbie · 06/12/2021 22:52

I'm surprised no-one has really mentioned how hugely fashionable very complicated plaits were last year!
(On little girls, the sideways french plait started with Frozen but multiple french plaits in various forms are still going strong).
You can't put an Elsa hairdo in a 1980s standard-issue fringed primary school bob.

JFM27 · 06/12/2021 23:02

My mum and most mums back in 50s wanted us to have short hair because they worried about us catching nits.i always had short hair apart from growing it in my 20s for a short time,

But at 60 i dyed it red and grew it not down my back obviously but between chin length and shoulder, im not very grey so i use a temporary dye.i love my hair this length and this colour wouldnt change it.i now think why did i have short hair for so long.

TinselTinsel · 06/12/2021 23:03

My mum cut mine and my sisters hair short in the 80's because it was "fashionable" and we both hated it!

starlight13 · 06/12/2021 23:42

This really is a bizarre thread. Long hair is easier to manage and more often than not looks more stylish and less like a boy. That's it.

Saoirse82 · 07/12/2021 00:21

At school in the 90s I can't really think of anyone who had short hair.

DameAlyson · 07/12/2021 00:30

Long hair is easier to manage and more often than not looks more stylish

My hair grew long during lockdown. It wasn't easier to manage and didn't look more stylish. It's short again now.

and less like a boy.

Aren't we supposed to be a long way past this kind of stereotyping?
