Fellow WFH'er here.

Usually quite disciplined with completing tasks and rewarding with mini break but today:

No focus
Lack of concentration
Easily distracted
Loads to do but no motivation to do it

If you're WFH today how focussed are you today? And in general on other days?

Irk... I'm used to WFH now. In fact, I'm amazed at how incredibly distracting the office talk is when I go in -- all blokes except me and they gossip for England. At home I have kittens... I like the kitten distractions better (sorry lads). I am fairly focused in either location, but yeah... distractions beyond my control!!

You cant focus 100% of the time for 8 hours.
I think I would struggle to focus and work in a busy office now. I always struggled with it a bit, especially when doing figures. I sed to hate doing the finance part of my job as it was so hard to focus, now it is my favourite part.

Parkinson's Law - work expands to fill the time available.

I WFH unless there is a rare need to go into the office. If I have a lot of work to do for which I'm visibly accountable I'll work very hard for as many hours as it takes for me to feel that I remain 'in control', and at worst that can mean working through the night.

If I'm working on background tasks, my productivity is a small fraction of that. I'll have a lie in, have a nap if possible, go to the gym, whatever. I just make sure I'm able to respond quickly if something comes up, as it sometimes does.

My busy times are 80% - 90% of my time, so I don't feel guilty for taking it easy when I can.

Those that have no motivation - dont people realise you are not doing any work?

No because I have a shit manager who hates managing and prefers doing stuff himself. Lockdown has been his dream opportunity to drop all staff management completely. I would prefer to be busier. It might force me to concentrate and stave off the depression. Seeing a work coach this week as I really need to make a plan to get another job.

vickyp0llard · 06/12/2021 09:11

Yeah, my manager is clueless - he's so busy and scatterbrained and should never have been a manager. He'll ask me to do something one week and forget what he asked me next week.

I sense you have some issues there, but I'm afraid I cannot help you there.

You’re pretending you work 100% focussed all of the time for hours on end, to make some pious “I’m self employed, you employed people are all just lazy and workshy” statement to a bunch of strangers on the internet and I’m the one who has issues? 😆

I am the top performing member of my team of 10 staff members. I don't work at 100% every day, some days I barely work at 20%.

If I wasnt getting my work done, and to the high standard I do, then I suppose my boss would take me to task and I would deserve it.

Today I have a virtual court hearing at 3PM to give evidence, which is requiring some prep and so I've slowed my workload today in preparation for this. Tomorrow will be more busy, and I'll be in the office too.
