… to think that the postman should take his earphones out when delivering the mail?

My postman wears earphones when he is delivering the mail. This is annoying, but is it actually something that he shouldn’t do?

I have a newborn and live in a tall skinny house which means that I am usually doing something with the baby at the top of the house when he rings. I try calling to him out of the window (he can’t hear me) or grabbing baby and running down three flights of stairs, but by the time I get to the door he is well on his way up the road with his earphones in and a cheery spring in his step.

AIBU to think that he should take his earphones out when delivering the mail?

@Mantlemoose A bit of an escalation, there.

Sorry op but yabu.

@FestiveFruitloop

Meant to add, yes he should take his earphones out. A person should be 'talkable-to' while they are working, for all sorts of reasons.
His job is to deliver post, doors don't talk.
MorningStarling · 02/12/2021 14:00

YABVU. As others have said, just put a note on the door saying to ring the bell and leave the item on the doorstep.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/12/2021 14:02

This is so self obsessed, op.

He's not a social worker, he's not a personal assistant. He brings the parcels to the door and that isn't hindered by wearing earphones. If you can't get to the door then you need to find yourself another solution.
Could you get a parcel box?

MrsBison · 02/12/2021 14:03

Youre being a pain OP

My stand in postie scared the bejeezus out of me this morning, I live in a closed off road, nobody was home but me, I heard a conversation from my front room as I went to walk in, my heart was in my mouth, it was the postie on the phone handfree, I laughed to myself and carried on..

Sorry, YABU.

londonrach · 02/12/2021 14:06

Yabu. Music really helps in this case

Not really.

You have no idea if he is hearing impaired or not, as it is a largely invisible disability.

I often wear headphones when out walking, as the audio helps me deal with intrusive thoughts. (MH related).

Im also hearing impaired.

There are some things I don’t hear, even with hearing aids in. Hearing aids do not work like glasses, as in they don’t restore your hearing perfectly. They also don’t work for sounds behind you, so I would t hear you pounding up the street behind me.

The postie is doing his job and headphones do not affect him doing that.

So either leave baby upstairs, or stick a note on the door.

This is just as bad as the ‘I saw the amazon guy have a cigarette in his van’ thread yesterday

What about people who are hearing impaired?
DriftingBlue · 02/12/2021 14:10

You have lots of options

Put a note on the door
I do this all the time when I am expecting a package. Especially if I know it requires a signature. I put a note that states I am home because they just assume I won’t be and sometimes don’t even ring the bell.

Get a ring door bell. That way you can use the speaker to talk to him through your phone.

hangrylady · 02/12/2021 14:10

Self obsessed much.

Why is it an escalation. Would you come on here asking if the post office should refuse to employ deaf people? He could have hearing issues, or he could just want to make his job, out in all weathers a little more bearable.

grapewine · 02/12/2021 14:14

YABU and entitled. Not his job to wait for you. He's not unreasonable to wear headphones. Might make the job bearable!

Thursdaymiami · 02/12/2021 14:14

Let me guess this is your first born?

FinallyFluid · 02/12/2021 14:15

Check your privilege.

Whammyyammy · 02/12/2021 14:15

Yabvu, get a life and leave the postie alone

Kuachui · 02/12/2021 14:16

yabu - _- its a boring job and he is there to deliver post not make your life easier

faw2009 · 02/12/2021 14:17

Yabu.
Our postman is deaf.

Thunderpat · 02/12/2021 14:18

@Thursdaymiami no - not my first born. Oh dear. What’s your point?

OP keeps trying to drag her kid into the topic as if it’s relevant 😄
It’s a brutal job, you want the workers to walk the 10+ miles of their route (yes, that’s ones who have a van) and be ready to obey people who happen to shriek out their windows at them?

Must be nice to be so self obsessed

Nicknacky · 02/12/2021 14:20

Why do you live the baby to answer the door?

Thursdaymiami · 02/12/2021 14:20

Struck me as a PFB situation that you can’t leave your baby for 1 minute. But clearly there is another reason!

Nicknacky · 02/12/2021 14:21
