Would you date a binman?

Inspired by another thread about being a binman as a career.

You meet a guy on a night out or OLD. Seems nice enough and nice looking, all good. Tells you he's a binman.

YABU - immediate turn off
YANBU - give him a chance

Move over firemen, for 2022 I want a bin man calendar!

Cyrilgoggin · 02/12/2021 10:09

Mumsnet never ceases to amaze me.
What a disgusting question.

lottiegarbanzo · 02/12/2021 10:09

Of course! Hard working, organised, fit and generally cheerful IME. What's not to like?

LampLighter414 · 02/12/2021 10:09

If he's part of the Birmingham bin men cartel probably earns a bit too

RantyAunty · 02/12/2021 10:11

Since it was about someone's son, maybe a better question would have been, would you want your DC to be a binman?

HailAdrian · 02/12/2021 10:12

Only on MN is it unfathomable that some of us have jobs, rather than careers and are happy about it. There is more to life than work. I dare say a 'bin man' has a better work-life balance than a lot of people.

lottiegarbanzo · 02/12/2021 10:12

Also very impressive to any small children you may have or know. They don't care about IT engineers, customer service experience managers or whatnot. Bin men, shop workers, early-years workers, bus drivers, these are the impressive jobs to the average pre-schooler.

Shikamiri · 02/12/2021 10:12

@GodIsAVegan

Just remembering that bin man who got sacked for kicking the head off a kids snowman.... if it’s him, then no. ⛄️ 😂
This made me laugh out loud Grin Grin Grin

I think he sounds like more of a catch than you if that's something you're even thinking about 🙄

Any person who goes out to earn an honest wage should NEVER be looked down on because of the job they do.

CatOfTheLand · 02/12/2021 10:13

Yes. But I did turn down a date from a gynaecologist once*

*at a house party - we didn't meet on the job, eyes meeting across my stunning foof

iwannascream · 02/12/2021 10:13

I married one !!!! He then got moved to be a road sweeper in the town centre. It did not make one bit of difference to me what he did for a living, it was a well paid job and put a roof over our heads and food on the table.

Onthebins · 02/12/2021 10:14

Quick name change but I’ll be more honest than the people falling over themselves for fit binmen and say no, definitely not.

A good mate of mine’s husband did it and the issues for me would be:

a) hours
b) risk of injury/high chance of needing to be on sick pay at some point. He hurt his leg on glass, required major surgery on his knees and needle stick injuries weren’t unheard of despite protective equipment and good training.
c) long term career planning. We’ll all need to work much longer. Even with automation, it’s a hugely physical job.

KittytheHare · 02/12/2021 10:15

As long as he had cor blimey trousers I wouldn't mind.

WomanWithDiamondEarring · 02/12/2021 10:15

What do you do for work, OP?

CatOfTheLand · 02/12/2021 10:16

@lululu16

My husband is a bin man so yes
Genuine question- does he come home with loads of street treasures? Most of our furniture is side of the road finds (and I actually have loads of clothes that were left in bags on top of bins/walls with signs saying 'free') so I always wondered if they're allowed to take stuff home
Beautiful3 · 02/12/2021 10:16

Yes of course, as long as he was nice to me and clean.

YonderTweek · 02/12/2021 10:16

I wouldn't think twice about dating a binman. I also wouldn't have an issue with my son being a binman.

StormyCornishSeas · 02/12/2021 10:17

Yes! I would my bin men are rather good looking.

UtterSocks · 02/12/2021 10:19

I would rather date a binman than a ton of other professions - lawyer, journalist, politician, traffic warden ... OR someone who was unemployed and not even looking for work. I would just think a man doing physical labour would be physically fit so that's a bonus. In fact, next time the bin round happens near mine I might go out and take a look...

RedHot22 · 02/12/2021 10:19

Occupation is irrelevant to any relationship I would consider.

MollysDolly · 02/12/2021 10:19

Nope. Nor a milkman, or postman, but that's because I'm useless with really early starts, every day.

They wouldn't cope with my mood as I woke at 4.30am every day. So I'd not bother in the first place. Anyone who has a standard day that starts way before 7am really.

evilharpy · 02/12/2021 10:20

I would.

I would not date someone who was long term unemployed (although if it looked like he was just in between jobs from redundancy or similar that might be different), but I can't imagine why someone being a bin man would put me off.

dworky · 02/12/2021 10:22

FGS, people are more than what they do for a living!
Apart from that, refuse collection (like other dirty jobs) is something we all rely on.

Pemba · 02/12/2021 10:25

Many years ago my friend's BIL was a binman, and she used to look down on him for that. Sorry to say, at the time I joined in with this a bit. Now I realise how narrow minded and snobby such thinking is. Refuse collectors perform a vital role in society, and God bless them for having strong enough stomachs to do it for us!

Thinking of jobs that would have put me off someone, I can think of :

Arms dealer
Anyone involved in making pornography

Dodgy landlords
Dodgy estate agents
Slaughter House workers
