Fed up of people criticising my diet

Lemons1571 · 30/11/2021 22:22

So for the past year I’ve been on a well known meal replacement diet. Lost over half my body weight and gone from a size 20 BMI 40 to a size 8 BMI 19.5. People reactions were slightly irritating at first, but are now really getting on my nerves. For example:

“Eewww yuck I couldn’t drink that”
“Oh no that’s so unhealthy”
“I like my food too much, you’ve got to have solids and not exist on liquid”
“I can’t stand milkshake”
“Oh I bought some but it was grim and made me heave”

Aarrgggh fuck off. I don’t criticise the chocolate bar or McDonald’s you’re eating. Maybe I’m being unreasonable. But bugger off with your negative comments on my diet choices. It actually gets a bit upsetting and makes me wonder why I bothered if it’s all so grim.

Anyone for any good retorts before I say something I regret?

Don’t bother with retorts. Just ignore.

Why are you still on the shake diet if you’ve lost all the weight? Aren’t you eating a regular healthy diet now? That could include a chocolate bar.

wavingwhilstdrowning · 30/11/2021 22:28

I'd laugh and say 'Newsflash! We're all different" and make a cheers gesture with your shake Grin Good for you BTW, well done :)

toomuchlaundry · 30/11/2021 22:29

Will you return to a regular diet?

Justilou1 · 30/11/2021 22:31

Fuck them. You know they’re jealous.

clatterclatter · 30/11/2021 22:34

They’re jealous.

‘It’s quite rude to comment on other peoples meals’ and repeat into infinity.

JustForThisToday · 30/11/2021 22:34

Just fucking spit in it, why don’t you?

PurpleDaisies · 30/11/2021 22:34

I would be a bit concerned about a friend still on a shake diet at that bmi.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 30/11/2021 22:39

You sound equally judgemental thinking about their McDonalds. Be aware that weight goes on as quick as it comes off.

Lemons1571 · 30/11/2021 22:39

I’m doing half and half - learning about maintenance and how many calories my body needs to stay at the same weight. Surprisingly few! It’s harder than losing weight! I did put on a few pounds due to not exercising (I’m a bit fair weather about walking and jogging in the freezing cold uk winter). So had to rebalance.

So fed up of people’s cats bum mouths and gagging faces.

@OneRingToRuleThemAlli would never judge out loud and make “yuck” faces though. Find it a bit upsetting.

I find thank you but I'm not asking for opinions on my choice.

They think you're a snotty cow but at least they stop talking to you. 😁

Nicknacky · 30/11/2021 22:42

You know there is nothing wrong with eating chocolate or having a McDonalds?

Whilst your weight loss is staggering I can’t lie, I would be worried about my friend if they had swung the opposite way and can’t contemplate eating “solids”.

IncompleteSenten · 30/11/2021 22:42

I find "thank you but I'm not asking for opinions on my choice." Does the trick, I meant to write

RandomMess · 30/11/2021 22:43

"Some of us don't have a choice" very firmly.

At the moment that is where you are and they are bloody rude!

PurpleDaisies · 30/11/2021 22:44

The op does have a choice.
CalamariGames · 30/11/2021 22:45

I do think this is their way of giving an excuse why they are not able to copy your success in losing weight, not that you asked them to follow your diet or would expect them to lose weight. But people can be very touchy about their diet and weight and will feel like they need to justify themselves when they don't. I would just say something fairly neutral like that's understandable or not everyone does like the shakes that's true. Or if they say its unhealthy I would say maybe its not the perfect diet, but better than being obese as that is very unhealthy.

HikingforScenery · 30/11/2021 22:47

Why are all these people finding out about your diet choice? Surely by now those closest to you know about it so it shouldn’t be a topic of conversation anymore, really

DaisyNGO · 30/11/2021 22:48

OP if you can be bothered to look, I'm pretty sure there was a study in the BMJ that said there's a lot of long term success on these.

It was considered that the reward of rapid weight loss and getting used to a reduction of choice was partly why.

I wish I had the discipline, I'm impressed even if others aren't.

Random stranger online says well done, lol Flowers

Franklyfrost · 30/11/2021 22:48

I think some of them are thoughtless like the last two on the list where the person is just saying what the drink means to them. The others are rude but not majorly.

It would be crazy to give up weight loss that works for you because some people don’t like your drink. They don’t look palatable but who cares. It’s not worth a retort. You could tell them how helpful you’ve found them and maybe next time they’ll say ‘oh I met someone who says those are great’.

Maybe, I don’t know, just throwing this out there, maybe you had years of people judging what you ate when you were larger and it’s a trigger point for you?

Lemons1571 · 30/11/2021 22:48

@HikingforScenery going back to the office which is hybrid so always see someone I haven’t seen for 21 months. Plus loads of wider relatives and friends who I’ve barely seen either, now beginning to meet up.

To be fair to them, your diet is a tough one and likely required a self discipline most people wouldn't have. Rather than see its as a dig at you, see it as them acknowledging they couldn't do what you've done. They are telling themselves that the trade off for being thin isn't worth it. As thin is seen as superior, they are saying it to make themselves feel better, not to make you feel worse. I had similar when I lost weight cutting out animal and processed food. So many people telling me they'd rather be fat than give up meat/dairy. While id rather give those things up and be thin, so we pays our money and takes our choice as they say.

Seemssounfair · 30/11/2021 22:50

Well done on your amazing loss op, hope you manage to maintain it.

Which replacement did you use? I am considering this to give me a kick start, tried slim fast strawberry a few months back and the taste wasnt great.

Yesmate · 30/11/2021 22:50

“They do what I need them to do, no one is asking you to drink them”

BeMoreGoldfish · 30/11/2021 22:51

I’ve just started this - lost a stone already! I’ve tried to hide what I’m doing as I can’t be arsed with the negativity. Loads of very positive research on it now. Your loss in inspiring! Flowers

MintyCedric · 30/11/2021 22:52

I'd just say 'well it works for me' and change the subject.

I'm.very overweight and have just started on a job lot of Slimfast to give myself a bit of a Kick-start.

I got a fair bit of side eye from my 17yo DD who has got in shape this year via calorie defecit and strength training and become a bit of a fitness fanatic.

I'm very proud of her achievements and thrilled that she's happier about herself but as I pointed out, she's not a menopausal middle aged woman with a thyroid problem, so if Slimfast is what it takes for me, so be it.
