Fed up of people criticising my diet

Lemons1571 · 30/11/2021 22:22

So for the past year I’ve been on a well known meal replacement diet. Lost over half my body weight and gone from a size 20 BMI 40 to a size 8 BMI 19.5. People reactions were slightly irritating at first, but are now really getting on my nerves. For example:

“Eewww yuck I couldn’t drink that”
“Oh no that’s so unhealthy”
“I like my food too much, you’ve got to have solids and not exist on liquid”
“I can’t stand milkshake”
“Oh I bought some but it was grim and made me heave”

Aarrgggh fuck off. I don’t criticise the chocolate bar or McDonald’s you’re eating. Maybe I’m being unreasonable. But bugger off with your negative comments on my diet choices. It actually gets a bit upsetting and makes me wonder why I bothered if it’s all so grim.

Anyone for any good retorts before I say something I regret?

Oh and you might like this OP

I mentioned the idea to a friend when I was dithering how to try to lose weight

Her- "you can't drink that! Do you know, it's got chicken fat in it?"
Me - "so has chicken and you don't mind me eating that".
Her - silence -> glare -> cat's bum mouth.

@Franklyfrost interesting theory. I actually found that no one commented when I was large and getting stuck into a cake or whatever. No one said oooh yuck you’ll get even bigger. People were polite (if they even commented at all), and said ooh that looks tasty, or something like that.

Maybe because they felt better about themselves when I was fat and eating to stay fatter than them. I really don’t know.

Thank you @DaisyNGO

I've learned not to mention to anyone what I'm eating.
So if it's a meal replacement soup I make it in a mug and get rid of the packet.
Protein bars etc the same, unwrap it and who would know.
Well done by the way. Once you've got a handle on your maintenance you will be eating normal healthy food.
People will always offer opinions though regardless.

5128gap · 30/11/2021 22:54

You could also just pull a surprised face and say 'Really? I find them delicious'

Neolara · 30/11/2021 22:55

I just wanted to say congratulations on your weight loss OP. Very impressive.

Sittingonabench · 30/11/2021 22:57

Maybe just brutal honesty - I’m healthy and happy. I agree with people it’s a jealousy thing - may just be that they are unhappy about their reliance on food. Well done on your achievement and keep going in finding your own balance.

theworldsgonefeckingmad · 30/11/2021 22:58

Definitely jealous, massive well done OP it's a real achievement Thanks

TeenTitan007 · 30/11/2021 23:12

As you say it's much harder to stay slim than to lose weight. I lost masses of weight on a low carb diet, but as soon as I stopped I put on an even more massive amount. Hope you stay careful and maintain well. Ignore the jealous people.

Missrabbitt · 30/11/2021 23:15

Just reply something like ‘we’ll it’s a lot healthier than when I ate cakes all day and was twice this weight’ or ‘I get so much more enjoyment out of life being slimmer so it’s worth it for me’ or just shrug and say ‘works for me’

Etinoxaurus · 30/11/2021 23:15

Wow! Ignore them, it’s acceptable for some reason to comment on skinny pp diets and looks. Shrug. Can you post pics? That’s so impressive!!

mustlovegin · 30/11/2021 23:20

Ignore them OP. It's none of their business

Blooeyes · 30/11/2021 23:29

I would just shrug and say "I like it" or something like that and change the subject. Well done on your weight loss, very impressive.

Branleuse · 30/11/2021 23:31

Just smile and shrug.

Sunshineandrainbow · 30/11/2021 23:32

Amazing good for you op.
I need to do something radical and have looked up exante shakes
Any top tip for getting through it?

Thisbastardcomputer · 30/11/2021 23:35

I just say to people 'when I want an opinion I'll ask for one'

ThinWomansBrain · 30/11/2021 23:36

wow - that's amazing, well done for sticking with it.

Marvellousmadness · 30/11/2021 23:37

You need to get a thicker skin (haha funny expression since you've lost so much weight 😅)
Who cares what they think
My colleagues always critique what I eat and drink. I couldn't care less. Their entitled to their opinion. I will eat what I want Grin

Mamanyt · 30/11/2021 23:39

Or just a simple, "OK, and how's your sex life, since we're being personal, here?"

MizzFizz · 30/11/2021 23:40

Make it super awkward so they don't do it again, say these with a smile:
"Thanks for sharing your opinion."
"Please, go on..."

Worldwide2 · 30/11/2021 23:43

They are jealous.
As pp said we'll works for me and smile.
Well done btw

beebopado · 30/11/2021 23:45

WELL DONE Star

Pieminster · 30/11/2021 23:52

Bloody excellent weight loss OP

MostlyGuesswork · 30/11/2021 23:59

Wow! Really well done, OP! Which brand is it?

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/12/2021 00:03

I went from a 22 to an 8 and when I was about about a 12/14 all I got was praise. Now I am "too thin" and asked if I eat and I should eat more and blah blah.

I do think that is jealousy.

Actually mine is down to an EA now but no one knows that who comments on it. I think that losing enough to be slimish but still fat enough to make people feel less guilty about themselves is ok, any more than that it shines a spot light on their own body image and lack of self control.

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/12/2021 00:04

I should add that my BMI is 19 (am 5'5") and I worked hard to not lose weight and am getting help with the EA. Not lost in a year. I am not skinny!
