Fed up of people criticising my diet

Lemons1571 · 30/11/2021 22:22

So for the past year I’ve been on a well known meal replacement diet. Lost over half my body weight and gone from a size 20 BMI 40 to a size 8 BMI 19.5. People reactions were slightly irritating at first, but are now really getting on my nerves. For example:

“Eewww yuck I couldn’t drink that”
“Oh no that’s so unhealthy”
“I like my food too much, you’ve got to have solids and not exist on liquid”
“I can’t stand milkshake”
“Oh I bought some but it was grim and made me heave”

Aarrgggh fuck off. I don’t criticise the chocolate bar or McDonald’s you’re eating. Maybe I’m being unreasonable. But bugger off with your negative comments on my diet choices. It actually gets a bit upsetting and makes me wonder why I bothered if it’s all so grim.

Anyone for any good retorts before I say something I regret?

‘Each to their own’ then end conversation.

People are funny about others loosing weight. Congratulations 🥳

Helpstopthepain · 01/12/2021 09:56

How do they know what you are eating?

lupad · 01/12/2021 10:06

Is it slimfast? my colleague was doing it & used to have a shake with her as I thought there were really nice 👍🏼

lupad · 01/12/2021 10:06

that was meant to be a 😆

Avelina · 01/12/2021 10:16

Which diet have you been doing?

BobLemon · 01/12/2021 10:32

When encountering similar, I tend to go with “good job it’s not you drinking it then” and a blank face.

WildfirePonie · 01/12/2021 10:41

They are jealous. Rub their noses in it and make them feel shit about themselves. Only fair, they make you feel shit too.

This can’t be a serious comment?
Snoken · 01/12/2021 10:51

I sympathise with you! I’m veggie, and although I’m 10 years into it my family keeps making fun of me for it. Saying I eat rabbit food, offering me ham, placing the meat right by my plate and the veg further away when we eat etc. It’s fucking annoying, but I just ignore them. I don’t engage. It hasn’t helped, but it does make it less fun for them.

ALongHardWinter · 01/12/2021 10:57

You must do what you feel is right for you to lose weight OP. And congratulations on your fantastic weight loss! No matter what diet you follow, there are always going to be people ready to criticise it. I know,I've been there. I've been doing the intermittent fasting diet for the last 3 years,i.e. fasting for 20 hours, leaving a 4 hour window during which I can eat. It's the first time I've managed to stick to a diet in the last 30 years and I've managed to lose 7 stone so far (another 3.5 to go yet). But I've lost count of the times I've been told it's 'unhealthy' or 'unnatural' or even that I'll damage myself in some way! My response is that it's worked for me!
Please try to ignore people who think they know better,I think it just boils down to jealousy. As you said, you don't comment on what they're eating!

WildfirePonie · 01/12/2021 11:45

This can’t be a serious comment?

It is serious. Why should the OP feel shit about her diet? While her friends and family make thoughtless comments and gag at her food? Do the same back, fastest way to stop people from repeating their idiotic behaviour.

MsTSwift · 01/12/2021 11:46

How does it work going forward though? Surely you can’t remain in these for life?

FreeBritnee · 01/12/2021 11:50

But it’s still no one business if the OP wants to remain on a partially liquid diet for the rest of her life. That’s the point. The only time it would be acceptable to pass comment on someone diet would be if they were a child and you had parental rights and were concerned. Or you were a carer for someone who lacked capacity. Otherwise it’s none of your business.
EmeraldShamrock · 01/12/2021 17:19

@WildfirePonie Grow up.

OP it is a mixture of concerns and comments about weight/diet are fair game if the person is slim according to lots of people.

If I'd a coin for every sly comment about my weight I'd be a rich woman, wait till you eat a meal in a restaurant with a group, you're in for a treat. Grin

MrsBobDylan · 01/12/2021 18:41

People like to comment on everything. It's part of the human condition.

I think they see your amazing weight loss, feel shit about themselves and want to reinforce when they don't drink 'that shit'.

It is very unnerving when someone who has been very overweight suddenly becomes a size 8. I know it always makes me feel a bit of a failure.

But, that isn't your problem op. When they make offensive comments, just tell them how much you are loving being slim.

icelolly12 · 01/12/2021 18:44

It's not exactly a normal longterm way of eating so it will invite comment.

Thwackit · 01/12/2021 19:08

Just as well you don’t have to eat it then, isn’t it?’

TakeMe2Insanity · 01/12/2021 19:25

I’ve nothing to say other than well done and good for you. I think when you did deeper, you’ll find that people are jealous.

WhoppingBigBackside · 01/12/2021 19:29

@Lemons1571, I get those sort of comments about my food and it is irritating.

A firm 'Please do not comment on my food' usually shuts them up

mrscotton · 01/12/2021 19:33

I done a diet where you fasted two days a week (only ate 500 calories) and ate normally on the other 5 days. Lost over 4 stone in a year but constantly had people saying its not healthy, just eat in moderation etc but it worked for me. I ended up stopping as i fainted and doctor said i lost to much weight but will be trying again once my little girl in born and im able too. I have put most of it back on again 😭.

Just do what you find works and ignore the negative comments 😊

I used to do intermittent fasting and it was brilliant. I was the slim end of my healthy weight range and it was totally manageable and sustainable for me. I didn't have any health issues from it, as far as I'm aware. I only stopped because I fell pregnant and I couldn't find any decent research into fasting whilst pregnant so I decided to play it safe and put it on ice.

I also had the health comments. They often came from overweight people and they were irritating. You know what's unhealthy? Being fat. It's so, so unhealthy. If you stay far for long enough it will probably kill you in an slow and unpleasant way. We know this for certain. Eating one small snack one or two days a week and then eating "normally" the rest of the time is fine. Nobody has ever died from this, as far as I know. The only research based issues I've seen with IF is when it leads to anorexia, but that is very rare and it usually happens to people who have already suffered it in the past. For most people it's a perfectly healthy lifestyle.

@Coviddy
I just read an article about it, very interesting, thanks!

I think what I said still stands though as hormone issues can be helped or fixed with food. Some nutritionists would take a very holistic approach also and they want everything working well, because they know that everything has to work well to fix hormones and metabolism issues, such as sleeping..and it's not just sleeping for the right amount of time, technically we are supposed to get out in the daylight as soon as we wake up and that should help to balance our leptin and ghrelin hormones and make sure they are not working against us.

There's a lot to of it of course and I don't think it's easy, but I do think the right nutritionist with the right holistic approach can help!
