To ask what time you eat your evening meal? (Dinner)

What time do you eat your dinner?

Do you eat with the children or wait until later?

If you do exercise in the evening, will you eat before or after?

We eat as a family by 6pm, but sometimes if I have things on and get back late, we may not eat until 7:30ish. This then feels like we are eating late, compared to normal, but wonder if actually this is a more usual time to eat. If there is such a thing.

Around 6/6:30. Used to be later when it was just the two of us, but we like to eat at the table with DS(3) and his bedtime is 7:30.

lancaster · 29/11/2021 20:02

Variable. Usually between 7 and 9pm and together when possible. Have always eaten late with the kids due to work/clubs.

Sourwolf · 29/11/2021 20:14

Around 9pm.

Used to be 6.30pm as that seemed to be when other people ate so seemed the "right" time. But it always felt like I was rushing (SAHM so really shouldn’t have) so we started trying out later times until we found the right fit.

We always eat dinner as a family.

etulosba · 29/11/2021 20:17

Between 7 and 9. It will be closer to 9 this evening.

WinterCarlisle · 29/11/2021 20:37

DH is still WFH so we tend to eat as a family (3 DC 14, 11, 9) at about 6pm. I work 2 days a week and not home until 8pm so DH will feed the DC at the the usual time then I’ll heat something up. I LOVE him WFH as before he wasn’t home until 6.45 which was too late for the DC to have their tea as there’s usually scouts, cubs, football etc

BettyOBarley · 29/11/2021 20:42

About 5-5.30 as a family.
This is after years of eating at all weird and wonderful times, sometimes with kids, sometimes without kids due to DHs work hours. It's so nice now to eat together every night.

VestaTilley · 29/11/2021 20:43

We used to eat around 7.30pm. Then we had a DS so now we all eat at 5.15pm as a family.

I’m now really used to it and I couldn’t manage bathtime and toddler bedtime without eating first Grin

If DH is back late on the commute then I’ll eat with DS and DH will eat later, or vice versus, but one of us at least is always WFH so we can eat together, which I like.

VestaTilley · 29/11/2021 20:44

*vice versa - bloody iPhone

MrsDThomas · 29/11/2021 20:50

I hardly eat after 6. I hate that full feeling.

I work till 4:30-5. I might have beans in toast, chilli in the slow cooker, salmon and potatoes and veg. Nothing heavy. Dh works till6 usually so is food is either kept warm or cook it ready for when he comes home. DS will eat with him but eats something as soon as he gets from school.

If i go for a run after work , ill have toast and tea. Im rarely hungry after exercising

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/11/2021 20:51

8-9

georgarina · 29/11/2021 20:57

5pm with small kids

Pleasegodgotosleep · 29/11/2021 21:56

Mostly between 6-7 as a family (me, DH, DD6, DD3). Kids have snack after school/nursery then later tea so no need for supper.

1 day kids have later activities so they eat early (about 5) before class and we eat after they're in bed about 8.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 29/11/2021 22:06

We all eat together at 6/6:30ish. I'd eat later, but DS is 2.5 and wont eat if we're not eating with him.

I do 16:8 fasting so sometimes just skip dinner altogether and just cook for DH and DS.

AliMonkey · 29/11/2021 22:13

Until Covid, we ate together at weekends 6-6.30 and, in the week, kids (by that point young teens) ate 6ish and we ate 8.30ish (as one of us not home until 7.30 or later). Since Covid and with us both WFH most of the time, we've all eaten together most evenings at 6.45-7ish. I like the family time together, it's reduced my "eating window" which is healthier, but we eat less varied meals as there's fewer things we all like - though occasionally I do two options if I really fancy something I know not everyone will like.

parentingperson · 29/11/2021 22:37

@ThinWomansBrain

& it's supper

Apparently it's Supper if you're posh. (And used by only around 5% if people to describe their evening meal)

Supper is a wee snack you have an hour or so before bed.
When I was growing up it was a chocolate biscuit and a cup of milk.

Serin · 29/11/2021 23:21

DC all grown up so around 8pm here.

YuleHaveAWonderfulChristmas · 29/11/2021 23:48

DC grown up and mostly cook their own food unless I know they will be around.

I generally only eat breakfast and dinner so will eat at 11am and 5pm, however if I'm going out for an evening meal it will be at about 7.30pm

Slippy78 · 29/11/2021 23:59

Just started cooking mine now. Will eat at about 0100.

NowEvenBetter · 30/11/2021 00:15

Childfree, and me and my family eat at about 5-5:30. Waiting till nighttime would be torturous

maofteens · 30/11/2021 04:44

When kiddies were small I made and sat with them about 6 for dinner. My husband didn't get home til about 8pm so ate my own with him then.
He passed away when they were young so I started eating with them, though the downside is I was snacking three hours later!
Now as teens we eat about 7pm (not home from school until after 5pm) and my daughter and I eat together but my son tended to cook his own and eat on his schedule.
I used to exercise at night when single and I think I ate after otherwise I'd be exercising at midnight after I digested my food.

knitnerd90 · 30/11/2021 05:06

6:30-7pm or so, unless something interferes. At the moment all 3 are home at different times anyway, and it's easiest to give them a snack and then wait for a family meal. When they were tiny, and I wasn't working, they ate earlier.

shouldistop · 30/11/2021 05:18

5/5.30. We eat with our 5yo and almost 1yo

Neurodiversitydoctor · 30/11/2021 05:46

Usually between 6-8. 2 teens aged 15&17. I would prefer 6:30, DS really wants to be done by 6, DH and DD like to eat closer to or even after 8. 7 is a reasonable compromise.

knittingaddict · 30/11/2021 05:54

We eat late. For reasons that couldn't be avpided we ate at 9.30 last night, which was too late really. Usually it's 8 or so. No children at home now though.
