To ask what time you eat your evening meal? (Dinner)

What time do you eat your dinner?

Do you eat with the children or wait until later?

If you do exercise in the evening, will you eat before or after?

We eat as a family by 6pm, but sometimes if I have things on and get back late, we may not eat until 7:30ish. This then feels like we are eating late, compared to normal, but wonder if actually this is a more usual time to eat. If there is such a thing.

Normally around 7-8pm.

Do you eat with the children or wait until later?

No DC, but DH and I eat separately as we have different schedules. He tends to eat around 5.30pm.

If you do exercise in the evening, will you eat before or after?

I don't exercise at night - my entire job is active so I'm outdoors and on the go all day long.

LowlandLucky · 29/11/2021 17:08

When the children were at home we ate at 17:30 if my then Husband was at home. Now the children have gone we eat our main meal at lunch time.

QuinceLady · 29/11/2021 17:20

Usually 6:30-7. I get up early and don’t have a huge lunch so I’m ravenous by then. It also means cooking and clearing up are over and done with by 7:30/8 so there’s plenty of evening left to do things. Usually out 2/3 evenings a week too so need to eat early for that.

Exercise in the morning.

Wejustdontknow · 29/11/2021 17:22

We eat around 6pm as a family, me and dp both work within 10 minutes of home. Latest I finish is 2pm as I start at 6 and dp finishes at 5 and is home by 5:05.
I tend to exercise in a morning on my days off or straight after work before the school run when I have the motivation. I do tend to snack if I stay up later in the evening but most nights I am in bed earlier then the kids as I like a lot of sleep

Bushkin · 29/11/2021 17:23

Between 6 & 8, sometimes with kids. I don’t like to eat within 2-3hrs before bed or I get acid

LindaBlinda · 29/11/2021 17:27

6pm as a family.

And I hate evening exercise so do it in the morning.

AnxiousPixie · 29/11/2021 17:29

DH gets in too late for us all to eat together in the week so normally I sit with the kids while they eat at 5 and then me and DH eat after bedtime at 7.30.

We all eat together at the weekend at about 5.30.

I'm hoping to push it later as the kids get older until we are all eating together at about 6.30.

Meruem · 29/11/2021 17:32

If I don’t eat by about 7:30 then I won’t have dinner at all. I just sort of lose my appetite past that point. So my usual time is around 6/6:30. DC are adults now but when they were young we always ate as a family around 5:30/6.

I don’t do anything after eating. I have IBS and even just going for a walk after dinner triggers it. So I couldn’t exercise after. I have to just sit and let the meal go down! It means I rarely go out for dinner nowadays. It has to be somewhere I can sit for a good hour after.

Missey85 · 29/11/2021 17:32

About 7pm I eat late or else I just get hungry again later on

HarrisMcCoo · 29/11/2021 17:36

3.30pm/4pm. We all eat together and have a chat about our day. Two course meal usually.

Supper around 7pm/8pm.

480Widdio · 29/11/2021 17:36

No children, about 5pm,I swim every evening,so need to eat early.

reluctantbrit · 29/11/2021 17:38

We eat as a family, always did since DD is weaned. It moved from 6.30pm to now 7.30/8pm. Food is cooked mainly from scratch or are leftovers

I never understood the idea of children's tea (or whatever you call it) and a separate meal for the adults. Also we work and aren't home before 6pm most days and DD eating at 4.30pm just means she was starving at 7pm anyway. She has a snack after school to tidy her over.

miltonj · 29/11/2021 17:39

Around 7:15 now.

But when dd was younger and breastfeeding all the time I would have it at 5:30 every evening as I was ravenous by then! There was no way I could have waited for her to go to sleep. At some point I'd like us all to eat as a family, but she's a bit young yet and feel it's too much extra hassle.

Bonnealle · 29/11/2021 17:42

Very jealous of those who get home so early! I don’t finish work until 1800! Have started eating a bit earlier, so around 2030 (after babies in bed). The alarm goes off at 0530, and I can’t eat first thing, so eating later means I’m not hungry in the morning.

Icenii · 29/11/2021 17:43

Always eat as a family. 5pm on days we have sport at 7:15pm and around 6:30 - 7pm when we dont.

Use to start work at 6 - 630am to get home early but now I WFH.

FangsForTheMemory · 29/11/2021 17:43

I try to eat at 7 because it's better for your digestion but it usually ends up being 8.30 or so.

ginslinger · 29/11/2021 17:46

7.30 - just 2 adults in the hous

It depends what time your kids want/need to go to bed. Mine are in bed earlier than yours are having dinner!
Camomila · 29/11/2021 17:49

Around 6ish, give or take 30mins. Have always eaten as a family.

Same, 2 adults a 5 year old and an almost 2 year old.

DeepaBeesKit · 29/11/2021 17:52

We can't eat as a family mon- fri as DH doesn't get home until 7pm and it's just too late for our young children. We do eat with them on the weekend as much as possible, and I eat with the children quite a lot in the week, between 5 & 5.30pm.

DeepaBeesKit · 29/11/2021 17:53

My children go to bed at 7. They've always eaten at 5pm or so and we've never had issues with them being hungry after that.

rifling · 29/11/2021 17:55

Always eat as a family, even when kids were babies. 8pm in the summer, 7.30 ish in the winter. I don't exercise in the evening.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 29/11/2021 17:56

When my kids were school age (and maybe a bit before in my daughter’s case) we’d eat around 6-6:30pm, as a family at the table. My Mum would often pop in on her bike (we live between her job & her house) & she’s join us, watch the soaps and then trundle home.

We thought it was important to eat together, chat about our day & anything else (we’ve always encouraged debate!) & it was a nice way to decompress.

Then bath & bed around 7:30-8pm. For me, a quick final brew with my Mum & off she’d cycle!

Now the kids have flown the nest, and Mum has retired, I miss it.

DeepaBeesKit · 29/11/2021 18:01

Really envious of people where both parents can get home from work in time to cook a meal and have it on the table by 6pm. I'm in the south east where the vast majority of people work in london and the main earner (usually dad but not always) is never home before 7 or 7.30

GrouchyKiwi · 29/11/2021 18:17

I'm at home because I home educate the children so am there for cooking an earlier meal. Before children, when we were both working, we usually ate around 7:30pm.
