Do you remember Heather Mills?

I have been watching the Beatles documentary and got to thinking about her.

She was in the papers constantly in the 2000s, I remember her being painted as an absolute con artist witch. I googled a few articles about her from the time of the divorce. They are brutal in the misogynistic tone, she’s labelled as a slag, a goer, ex prostitute, you name it.

I don’t think papers write about women in such hash terms anymore. Maybe she was a bit of a twat, whoever married Saint Paul would have suffered at that time I think.

I suppose by AIBU is are the press less misogynistic.

Yes abused women dont behave how you would expect a loving wife to behave.

EYProvider · 30/11/2021 14:00

Bullshit, @julieca.

You don’t know the first thing about this woman.

TheElvishQueen · 30/11/2021 14:01

@julieca
She had an odd background and had attempted suicide after the end of her first marriage. She was a strange woman but certainly no victim. She was very firmly in control in that relationship. John was managed by her from the off. Of course he could have left, but he was extremely emotionally dependent on her. She encouraged that in every way.

Do you know her personally? Otherwise you seem to be making a lot of assumptions.
TooBigForMyBoots · 30/11/2021 14:09

Won't somebody please spare a thought for the poor little millionaire men.😆

EYProvider · 30/11/2021 14:09

I know she was having an affair with two men, one of whom ended up in John’s will having already been named in another will of a rich heiress who ended up dead in mysterious circumstances.

I think you have a very stereotypical view of what an abused woman looks like.

John treated Cynthia Lennon terribly. She always struggled to get maintenance for Julian, even told she had to go through Yoko as she was in charge of his finances. . Poor Julian, he even got promised (by Yoko) that he could pick one of John's guitars, but then wouldn't allow him the one he really wanted, as she wanted it for her own son. I could never understand the meanness. John left millions, why wasn't Julian better provided for.

julieca · 30/11/2021 14:30

Yes Julian was treated terribly.

I also am perplexed that a woman is being seen as off for attempting suicide. Shows stigma around mental health issues is alive and well.

julieca · 30/11/2021 14:34

@Sparklingbrook the thread has moved onto bashing other women partners of millionaire men.

EYProvider · 30/11/2021 15:12

Julian was cut out of John’s will by his evil stepmother from hell, who had a power of attorney to control John’s finances while he was still alive. Well, half alive. Like I say, she shoved him with drugs, so God knows how cognisant he was.

Somehow, Yoko’s lover, Sam Green, wormed his way into John’s will. She had control of it at this point so it probably wasn’t that hard. Julian was an inconvenience. It look him years to fight Yoko for his share of the will and she dragged him through court to get it.

EYProvider · 30/11/2021 15:15

What about some justice for John, @julieca? Can’t men be victims too?

Mumsnet tends to fairly rude about cock-lodgers, which is about as abusive a term as gold-digger.

Beatles bashing too, and some very dubious facts I think.

Back to OP's question - Heather Mills -

Long before she married Paul McCartney, I read an interview about her work as a model after losing a leg. it was inspirational and I kept it for some time, as an example of how strong and positive people can be in adversity

Subsequently, the press described her in far less positive manner. I never knew which version was correct

PinkyPromises · 30/11/2021 15:47

One weird thing I remember was that HM had on her wiki/bio information that she had been nominated for a Nobel Prize for charity work.

Sounds good but apparently nominees are never announced. Only winners.

Looking back I guess someone could have told her that she'd been nominated, but the implication was that either she voted for herself or it was BS

Lampzade · 30/11/2021 16:02

@GreenClock

I was thinking about her the other day because the video for A Wonderful Christmas Time was on TV, with Paul and Linda fooling around and having fun, and I was trying to remember how long it was since Linda died and he met Heather. It always seemed to me that he was desperate to remarry having been so happily and stably married before. I’ve known a few widowers move on with what seems like indecent haste, but it’s really driven by their positivity about the institution of marriage which actually says a lot about the deceased wife.

On another (shallow) note, F Shackleton looks quite hot with wet hair Grin

I agree. Widowers tend to marry quite quickly after the death of their wives, particularly if they were happily married
HousethatChunkbuilt · 30/11/2021 16:21

I think John did escape Yoko didn't he? With May Pang? He reportedly was much better when they were together and he got back in contact with Julian. Although I don't think John was a saint and was probably awful to live with. He was damaged by his upbringing.
If Yoko was that terrible but the remaining Beatles still smile next to her for publicity shots? Would they let her still be the face of their 'brand'?

regularbutnamechangedd · 30/11/2021 16:25

Wow @GetInThereLewis 'I struggle to dislike anyone who is a vegan' wins possibly the dippiest comment on Mumsnet award. Vegans are capable of cruelty. They just don't use or consume animal products. Hitler was a veggie, do you rate him?

regularbutnamechangedd · 30/11/2021 16:29

AmazIng how many people have fallen for the misogynistic narrative that Yoko controlled John. He controlled her. He beat her. He made her travel everywhere with him. He put her down. He did this to the woman that came before her, and a few other women in between.

As far as I'm concerned she can do what she likes with his estate, he was a disgusting excuse for a man.

EYProvider · 30/11/2021 16:45

John did not control Yoko, @regularbutnamechangedd.

He was a very broken man, and obviously had it in him to be a complete bastard. He treated the people he loved most - Cynthia, Julian and especially Paul - like shit.

But he was the abused in that relationship, not the abuser.

So you've not heard about him beating her and causing her to miscarry?
