There is always going to ber television charaters with names someone wants to use. I think there are more important things to be cross about.

TheOlihantheIvy · 15/12/2007 19:00

I know several Oscars, aged 3 and under, I think Eastenders are just reflecting that it's a name that is increasing in popularity. No one will remember the EE connection in a few months time anyway.

mylittleponey · 15/12/2007 19:02

never watch eastenders

Swedes2Turnips1 · 15/12/2007 20:29

Do you suppose a letter to the producers might work in getting the baby taken into care by social services (and out of the series) written into the script? Surely at least one of the Eastenders scriptwriters is on Mumsnet?

it's annoying isn't it - my dd is called Rhiannah everyone thinks i named her after than stoopid pop star Rihanna grrrr....

BeeEm · 15/12/2007 21:15

When i was pg with DD2 mother in law had a cat called Oscar - one day i said thets a shame because i'd like to call baby Oscar and I can't cos its the cats name. Next day he died! felt hugely guilty then DD2 turned out to be a girl anyway adn i'd jinxed the cat unnecessarily.........
am just a touch relieved that she is a girl and i'm not sharing an eastenders name
saying that i do think it is a lovely name and is on standby incase DS is ever concieved!

jetson · 15/12/2007 21:33

I didn't want anyone else in the world to have the same name as my son, so I made up a wierdy one.

glassofwhite · 15/12/2007 22:34

When pg with ds we met a couple at parent class who went on to have a dd called Ruby, this was before it got v.popular and before Ruby in EE. When I heard the name I siad to DH if we ever have a dd that will be her name, we now have a dd called Ruby, 7mths and people said all through pregnancy what names have you got, when I mentioned Ruby they all said after the song? After EE? NOOO!

bookofchristmascarolsmum · 15/12/2007 22:39

I decided the other day if I had a second dd what her name would be (it was on the short-list for dd) but I'm a bit scared to put it on here now in case someone from EastEnders is reading this thread .

FWIW, what Honey and Billy called their son was my choice if I'd had a ds. So there you go .

allIWannaBeForChristmas · 15/12/2007 22:42

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 15/12/2007 22:46

MsHighwater · 17/12/2007 22:28

I have cats called Oscar and Felix!

pantoinghousewife · 17/12/2007 22:30

This is why I named my dd after a vengence demon

Twinklemegan · 17/12/2007 22:31

my answer is don't watch eastenders
save yourself the stress - so you can say "oh, really? I don't watch it..."

but i would be p'd off if it was me in that situation. my kids have most un-trendy names

WinkyWinkola · 17/12/2007 22:39

I guess EastEnders is just trying to catch hold of the zeitgeist for names: Oscar, Alfie, Charlie.. . . .

I was going to call my new daughter Ruby but EastEnders put me off so I can understand your annoyance.

My cat is called Oscar. The other two cats are called Max and Billy. Great names.

leoandmummy · 17/12/2007 22:43

this happened to me! luckly (it is a soap) he was killed about 1 month into his eastenders stay

sunnydelight · 18/12/2007 03:06

I don't think there's really any such thing as an "original" name any more I'm afraid. I knew three families in Brighton with the Felix/Oscar combination

eidsvold · 18/12/2007 03:15

I too know a few families with an Oscar here in Aus so it really isn't a big deal is it. Just happen to like a name that is popular.

LambethLil · 18/12/2007 11:23

Also soaps fade and people forget. As a non soap watcher I unwittingly named dd2 after a then unusually named character on Home and Away and Neighbours. I used to introduce her as 'dd, its my middle name' now the fictional ones are both under the patio, but when we went to Oz she was one half a dozen in her school- still rare here though!!!!!

binklebells · 18/12/2007 11:25

When I named my little girl Lara I was convinced there would be lots due to Lara Croft (I named her after Dr Zhivago) but so far never met another

mm22bys · 18/12/2007 12:14

We had a cat called Oscar (got poisoned...).

Sounds like you named your DC before EE did, so yes, YABU!

Chardonnay1966 · 18/12/2007 13:02

My sister named her boy Oscar 15 years ago - after the baby in Darling Buds of May.
