I ordered some Christmas presents from a well known online retailer.
It cost £150
The parcel was meant to be here last Monday and it didn't arrive.
They said it was lost and refunded me £150 (it's back in my bank ) so I re ordered the items.
Now the first parcel has turned up that I've been refunded for.
What would you do?
Do I tell them?
Or do I return the second order and get a refund and keep this order that's already been refunded
Or is that awful ?

OP posts:

@veredd

Do you really think the company is going to miss £150 after they wrote it off so quick Imagine how many missing parcels they deal with per week.
No - the company is not going to miss £150, because it will be paid by every other paying customer of the company!
Pippa12 · 22/11/2021 16:07

I couldn’t be so brazen about it. It’s theft, I’d be worrying they’d involve the police when they realised.

Companies are worth millions true, but that still doesn’t make stealing right in my opinion.

tedsletterofthelaw · 22/11/2021 16:15

I had this once, I received a load of stuff with my order that wasn't mine.

Contacted the company and they wanted me to return it at my expense. I flatly refused given it was their mistake and they told me to keep it.

vereed · 22/11/2021 16:21

Well I've posted the items back so if the company receives the goods
If they choose to refund me it's up to them.

videobaby123 · 22/11/2021 16:24

@veredd

I actually don't feel guilty now at all. Everyone's different That company have messed me around no end, spending that long on "chat" to go around in circles. Ive posted them back for a refund using my other order number Let's see what happens If they refund great If they don't nothing lost
Hope you get the refund OP🙌 I'm sure you will
SusieBob · 22/11/2021 16:24

And I'm sure you put a note in saying that you received the original items, didn't you.

No? Shocked.

Someone might work for them who sees this thread. I'm sure they could put two and two together and get four and then you're screwed.

Awaits sulky deletion demand as outing..

vereed · 22/11/2021 17:20

@SunshineCake1 yeah I'm sure with thousands and thousands and thousands of orders a day they would remember me.
Like I say I've posted them back to them
It's their error not mine

SusieBob · 22/11/2021 17:29

It was their error initally (well, actually, an error on the fault of the courier) which they corrected by giving you a refund allowing you to re-order

Now this is entirely on you being a moral blackhole and wanting something for nothing.

SunshineCake1 · 22/11/2021 17:34

It is possible. I doubt there are lots of people trying to steal from them.

vereed · 22/11/2021 17:36

The first order was with a discount of 20%
When I re ordered they wouldn't honour the 20% off even tho it wasn't my fault I hadn't received the goods
Not great service really

SusieBob · 22/11/2021 17:39

Drip drip drip.

TuftyMarmoset · 22/11/2021 17:47

@Noseylittlemoo

I work in a store but during the lock down I worked for the online returns department. I was surprised at the amount of "lost " orders. Esp with Hermes deliveries which showed photos of the parcel being delivered and ppl saying not me /not my house etc,( even when Google maps showed identical looking house) 90% of people requested a refund rather than a replacement sent and I wondered whether some of those people were asking for a refund for something that they did actually get...
Tbh that’s probably because the Hermes driver used Google maps to get there and it’s not reliable enough. For some reason it used to show our house as being on the road our road is off. We are mid terrace and the NDNs showed as being in the right place. The stuff I ordered from Dunelm that I mentioned on this thread actually got delivered with a blurry photo of what I think was the incorrect location that Google maps had. I ended up with a refund, an unexpected redelivery a few weeks later, and a vow to avoid using Hermes.

So it's ok to steal from them because you chose to reorder regardless?
melj1213 · 22/11/2021 19:16

If you're going to steal, then just steal, don't pretend like you actually considered having morals.

You clearly had no intention of being honest and this thread was just a way to justify to yourself that your stealing is OK because its from and not self employed Brenda who is selling her crafts to top up her pension.

Keeping things that do not belong to you is theft. Dress it up however you like but you are still a thief.

Cowpad · 22/11/2021 19:50

Are you happy, giving stolen xmas presents to your family/friends?Hmm

EerieSilence · 22/11/2021 20:04

Amazon refunds you even if the goods were delivered because they committed to a certain time for delivery. You have the right to keep the goods even though you received a refund.
I would let them know the good have finally arrived and wait what they tell you. If it's Amazon, they would normally tell you to keep it.
I had a case with River Island where I ordered a jacket and the day I was supposed to pick it up from the store was the day they closed all the shops.
The parcel was MIA for months, I got the refund and then, all of a sudden, it arrived.
I called the customer service and was told to keep the jacket and the money.

Ralph871 · 22/11/2021 21:38

Lol at all the people saying they would return the items. I'm guessing the "well known retailer" is a multi million pound business evading all sorts of tax laws. I would only return if it was a small business or similar.

Keep them OP.

SusieBob · 22/11/2021 21:44

Still waiting for someone to explain why theft is ok if it's from a big business.

Anyone? Go on, have a go.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/11/2021 22:00

The money won’t come from the profits of the company, or from the shareholders’ dividends - it comes out of the pockets of customers - people like you and me, @Ralph871. I’d prefer not to pay for other people’s dishonesty - maybe you don’t feel the same, and think it’s fine that everything costs a bit more, because companies have to cover the costs of theft.
SunshineCake1 · 22/11/2021 22:10

If the OP did post to get approval, permission, validation from mumsnetters to say okay to keep the stuff for free, why does she want strangers to say so? Why does she need that from strangers ?

5keletor · 22/11/2021 22:15

Why are you trying to get sympathy for not having lots of spare cash and "only £100 in the bank" when you were quite happy to spend £150 in the first place? You've stolen items, pretending you somehow deserve them just makes you look worse.

liveforsummer · 23/11/2021 07:07

I feel I live in a different world sometimes, clearly a terrible dishonest one but I don't know a soul who wouldn't just keep it. 😆 I'd probably not go to the effort of returning it though,
Just keep to give as gifts etc

liveforsummer · 23/11/2021 07:08

@EachandEveryone

If it’s Amazon they always tell you to keep it so I would just ring them
Why bother ringing if you're just to be told to keep it?
liveforsummer · 23/11/2021 07:12

Yep. When I was a poor student with literally £10 in my bank account I found a £20 note in a cash machine - one of the old style ones where the cas dropped into a tray. I handed it in despite that £20 being enough to feed me for 2 weeks because, y'know, I have morals.

This was an individual's cash. Could have been the last £20 in their bank needed to feed their own family for 2 weeks. It's not really a comparison
