To book into a hotel whilst new kitchen is installed?

DH thinks I'm nuts! We live literally 300yards from a Premier Inn. I want to book us in for 3 nights whilst the dirty / heavy / noisy work is done. It involves removing a brick wall, levelling a floor, rewiring etc. I'm dreading it! We have only recently moved in, its a seafront apartment and the novelty hasn't worn off for DH yet (or me to an extent)
Hotel is just over £75 for the whole 3 nights (room only), bargain! I think I can cope with the noise of the lighter work, tiling etc later on. He thinks we are throwing money away if we stay in a hotel and why cant I just go and sit in his Mums or my Mums all day, its not forever after all!

Good idea. £75 isn't much for all that peace and control over your living conditions. If he doesn't want to come with you OP he doesn't have to!!

Spidey66 · 21/11/2021 09:30

I think that's totally reasonable,.

Cheerbear24 · 21/11/2021 09:30

Definitely, it will be £75 well spent!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 21/11/2021 09:30

I'd book it 100%, the upheaval is huge and it's not a large sum of money.

OinkPinkPonk · 21/11/2021 09:31

Do it!!

TwinklyBranch · 21/11/2021 09:34

I don't understand why he wouldn't want to do this! It's £75, hardly a fortune and definitely money well spent!

Bluntness100 · 21/11/2021 09:36

I wouldn’t. Are you going to sit in your hotel room all day for three days? They won’t be working at night and you can sleep in your own bed

Personally I prefer being in the house whilst work is done as I like to keep an eye on it.

Digestive28 · 21/11/2021 09:36

Such a good idea. Although if you have no kitchen why wouldn’t you get breakfast as part of the hotel stay?

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 21/11/2021 09:36

Yes book it. Let him stay
Smile

TotallySuper · 21/11/2021 09:38

How tight is he! £75 not even worth thinking over. Just book it and tell him where you'll be. He's welcome to sit at his mums if he prefers!

Chippychipcrisps · 21/11/2021 09:38

I wouldn’t bother for a kitchen renovation unless I had to work during the day from home. Would definitely do it if it was the bathroom.

speakout · 21/11/2021 09:39

I wouldn't.

I had my kitchen remodelled- included removing a wall, resiting stairs etc.
The builders had ongoing questions throughout the day- just little things, but crucial to the finished work- where lights/light fittings were to be placed, choices of materials, unforseen problems when the wall was removed which meant more radical work or leaving exposed stonework ( which turned into an attractive feature in the end. The turn of the stairs, height of a new winow ledge- loads of other little decisions that needed to be made.

I absolutely wanted to be around when the work was being done.

I would spend the money on meals out in the evening so you don;t have to cook while your house is in a muddle

Do it! I had a new kitchen without knocking through and that was bad enough. But oh my the dust!

£75 for 2 for 3 nights of clean bed linen and lashings of hot water! Premier Inn breakfasts are brilliant value as well and would set you up for tacking the dust. I would do that now and I'm not having a new kitchen!

Constance1 · 21/11/2021 09:44

I imagine the £75 is a drop in the ocean compared to what you are spending on the kitchen renovation so it's a bit odd for your DH to be so intent on saving this cost. In your position I would 100% do what you are suggesting!

Soontobe60 · 21/11/2021 09:45

Been there with the renovations - it was hell! One interesting point you could use is that for us, the builders had to spend time every morning and evening reconnecting the water pipe so we could use it in the bathroom, plus having us there when they were working was awkward sometimes, with me shut away in my bedroom, walking through clouds of dust to get outside!
Do it, tell your dh he’s welcome to join you if he wishes.

Mantlemoose · 21/11/2021 09:46

You go and let him stay! We went away when ours was done, perfect solution for us and the builders!

happytoday73 · 21/11/2021 09:46

Yes absolutely... He can stay at home then and you can book your breakfast and get kids for free...

MiniPumpkin · 21/11/2021 09:48

That’s a great idea, even if you decide not to stay overnight then you still have a peaceful place to go to, I couldn’t cope if wfh in any form of noise so I’d defo book

Keladrythesaviour · 21/11/2021 09:49

Do it. We are currently living through it. I've done it before and know it will be fine and worth it but oh it's not fun. It's also lasting a lot longer than three days!
If you're in an apartment, I'm guessing you don't have a utility room? If so, being with a sink except in the bathroom is really stressful.

traintraveller · 21/11/2021 09:50

I'm getting my bathroom done soon and I've booked a hotel in another city.

gogohm · 21/11/2021 09:53

The hard bit was no kitchen (6weeks for me, extension) not the mess. I would spend the £75 on takeaways

Frazzled2207 · 21/11/2021 09:55

Well when we had our loft conversion done we buffered off on holiday to portugal during the worst of it so Yanbu IMO!
I think the contractors appreciated the fact that they had less interruptions and didn’t have to clear up at the end of each day

Simonjt · 21/11/2021 09:57

Go for it, when I had my kitchen done I went on holiday, when I got home everything was spotless and all I had to do was choose which cupboard to put things in.

Bonitalazenia · 21/11/2021 09:57

@Soontobe60 The builders have reassured us that we will have drinking water which they will reconnect as you described.... your situation sounds like mine will be.
We have only had a microwave and airfryer for weeks...
@Chippychipcrisps we only have one bathroom and im worried about needing a poo while they are there?!
