To book into a hotel whilst new kitchen is installed?

DH thinks I'm nuts! We live literally 300yards from a Premier Inn. I want to book us in for 3 nights whilst the dirty / heavy / noisy work is done. It involves removing a brick wall, levelling a floor, rewiring etc. I'm dreading it! We have only recently moved in, its a seafront apartment and the novelty hasn't worn off for DH yet (or me to an extent)
Hotel is just over £75 for the whole 3 nights (room only), bargain! I think I can cope with the noise of the lighter work, tiling etc later on. He thinks we are throwing money away if we stay in a hotel and why cant I just go and sit in his Mums or my Mums all day, its not forever after all!

I would do it 100%. We had our bathroom done in the summer and it was 2 weeks of early starts, noise and general disruption. And yes, judging when you can race to the loo with workmen, plasters and electricians around is really stressful!

Bonitalazenia · 21/11/2021 10:08

@Constance1 yes its a drop in the ocean! I think his point is we have a sea view and we are now going to pay for a sea view when we have a perfectly lovely bed of our own?

@speakout

I wouldn't.

I had my kitchen remodelled- included removing a wall, resiting stairs etc.
The builders had ongoing questions throughout the day- just little things, but crucial to the finished work- where lights/light fittings were to be placed, choices of materials, unforseen problems when the wall was removed which meant more radical work or leaving exposed stonework ( which turned into an attractive feature in the end. The turn of the stairs, height of a new winow ledge- loads of other little decisions that needed to be made.

I absolutely wanted to be around when the work was being done.

I would spend the money on meals out in the evening so you don;t have to cook while your house is in a muddle

Exactly that. Always found there are queries which affect your eventual use of the kitchen. It’s the eating and drinking that is the problem. Going out for that is the best to keep you comfortable. When we had a bathroom done and downstairs loo installed I spent a lot of time finding a loo in shops etc. Then a Premier Inn would have been a blessing.

We had a house renovation and moved in with fil for a few days. I wish I hadn’t bothered as my sil was a bitch to us at the time. I wish I’d just booked the Premier Inn.

Bluntness100 · 21/11/2021 10:29

You shouldn’t be wading through dust, they should put sheets down and clean up every night, yes it will be disruptive but for me I prefer to be on site when I have work done. Plus I like watching the progress.

Maybe you do it and your husband can stay at home?

Cissyandflora · 21/11/2021 10:30

Don’t think twice. It’s very cheap. You must be spending a lot on the work. Doesn’t make sense.

NoSquirrels · 21/11/2021 10:32

He can stay home, you can stay in the hotel. Perfect! Grin

twilightcafe · 21/11/2021 10:32

You go. I bet any money that DH will be there with his toothbrush on Day 2 😃

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 21/11/2021 10:50

Do it! I lived through mine but would love to have not been there!

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/11/2021 10:51

Genius idea.

FangsForTheMemory · 21/11/2021 10:59

Having just had my kitchen done, I wish I had.

FangsForTheMemory · 21/11/2021 11:00

to the people who say you need to be onsite, they will only be a ten minute walk away

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 21/11/2021 11:05

I wouldn't kitchen fitters need supervising 24/7 or they don't do a good job trust me.
I lived in my house while the entire house was being renovated.
I had a kettle and a 2 ring elevtric hob in my bedroom. Its just 3 days and I'd want to be keeping an eye on what they are up to at all times.

Feelingofftoday · 21/11/2021 11:05

I'd offer to put your neighbours up in a hotel first to be honest.

They'll be the ones suffering with no benefit at the end Grin

I'm dreading our neighbours getting their kitchen done in a few months!!

WayneBruce · 21/11/2021 11:28

Do it. I had my floor levelled last year. I never thought of going to a PI for those days and wish I had.
The smell is really strong while it's drying. Bork.

AllyBama · 21/11/2021 11:49

Omg yes, brilliant idea. Do it.

We’ve just had our kitchen/bathroom/laundry fully gutted and renovated, it took 2 months and we lived in the house the whole time because we were naive to what it would be like. It’s a bloody nightmare.

If I had my time again we would absolutely stay in a hotel, stay for as long as possible.

LindaEllen · 21/11/2021 11:56

Having our kitchen done was an absolute nightmare. If we could go back, I'd have done the exact same thing!

In fact, I'm planning on doing the same when we're getting the bathroom done.

HelloDulling · 21/11/2021 12:00

Oh my God yes! There will be times of no power/heat/water. Just book it.

lisaandalan · 21/11/2021 12:02

I'd do it money well spent, x

Aprilx · 21/11/2021 12:03

I am not known for being tight, but I honestly can’t see the point, nothing to do with the moment whatsoever. You won’t have a kitchen in your Premier Inn room either. I would move out for a bathroom renovation, for a kitchen renovation I would be enjoying takeaway and indoor picnics.

NeedWineNow · 21/11/2021 12:20

We had it kitchen done a few years ago and didn't move out. Admittedly ours is small so it wasn't a huge job but still took about a week. We just moved things into our dining room and set up our dining table with the kettle and microwave. We're quite well served with takeaways in our village and friends invited us round for dinner so we were ok. We used our bathroom sink to wash up and fill the kettle. It helped because there are only two of us I think.

We're looking to get out bathroom done soon and I think we might need to move out as we've only got one WC unless they can keep that connected.

lockdownalli · 21/11/2021 12:25

I think you should be in hotel and DH can stay in the flat to supervise the builders.

Win Win

CovidCorvid · 21/11/2021 12:29

When we had major building works including a new kitchen we lived here throughout. I had a kettle, microwave and a plug in hob in the sitting room for weeks. One night I came back from work and the kitchen and dining room were six inches deep in rubble so turned round and went to the pub for dinner.

I wouldn’t book a hotel but use the money for meals out or takeaways.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/11/2021 12:48

Great idea. I was off sick when I had my kitchen done. It was a nightmare so I booked in to hotels, stayed with my sister and parents. Anything to be out of the way! I work 12 hour shifts so it would have been much easier to be at work each day!

pourmeanotherglass · 21/11/2021 12:57

We had ours done recently. I work full time outside the house so didnt feel the need to go away. I've stayed in places like premier inn for work trips and would much rather be in my own home. Maybe if i worked from home i would feel different and need somewhere quiet for the daytime.
We ate out quite a bit, and also set up a temporary kitchen in the corner of the living room. We have a giant water carrier from when we used to go camping, so used that for water and we also have a couple of single camping gas cookers, so used those and the microwave when we fancied a night in.
