To book into a hotel whilst new kitchen is installed?

DH thinks I'm nuts! We live literally 300yards from a Premier Inn. I want to book us in for 3 nights whilst the dirty / heavy / noisy work is done. It involves removing a brick wall, levelling a floor, rewiring etc. I'm dreading it! We have only recently moved in, its a seafront apartment and the novelty hasn't worn off for DH yet (or me to an extent)
Hotel is just over £75 for the whole 3 nights (room only), bargain! I think I can cope with the noise of the lighter work, tiling etc later on. He thinks we are throwing money away if we stay in a hotel and why cant I just go and sit in his Mums or my Mums all day, its not forever after all!

Our kitchen remodel was hellish. Book the hotel

icedcoffees · 21/11/2021 13:01

I think it's probably a good idea to have someone in the house to supervise, answer any questions etc. if possible.

But yes, by all means take the kids and stay elsewhere so at least you have full-time heating, running water and access to the toilet, shower and such.

CopperLily · 21/11/2021 13:03

Do it. I'm currently about to go in to week 7 of having my kitchen and dining room being turned into a kitchen diner and have had no cooking facilities in all of that time. The house is cold, dusty and incredibly unpleasant. The thought of a nice warm hotel room is lovely!

Idontbloodyknow · 21/11/2021 13:05

I would just book it (with bfst incl) however if money is super tight (which it probably isn't if your having a new kitchen) maybe not. However it is 100% worth it to save you all that stress

ChargingBuck · 21/11/2021 13:06
@Constance1 yes its a drop in the ocean! I think his point is we have a sea view and we are now going to pay for a sea view when we have a perfectly lovely bed of our own?
Why's it up to him?

If he's so set on his sea view from his own home, he can stay in his "perfectly lovely bed" while you sleep at the Premier, no?

Chunkymenrock · 21/11/2021 13:10

Great idea. I'd definitely do it.

Noooooo!!!!! 7 weeks?

This is what my neighbours are planning.

7 weeks?????!!!!!!!

Can I bill them for a hotel?! 😂

Chunkymenrock · 21/11/2021 13:21

In premier inn, its the same price for 2 sharing as it is for 1. So book for 2 and if he's still being a twat, go on your own. Nothing to lose at all.

AnneElliott · 21/11/2021 13:43

I'd do it. I moved into my mum and dads with DS while the kitchen was done. It's easier for the workmen as well as they can cut off the water / drainage and not worry about you having services available.

mumda · 21/11/2021 14:49

The thing about having a kitchen replaced is having no kitchen.

I'd spend the money on eating out.

HollaHolla · 21/11/2021 15:20

If you’re WAH just now, then do it.
My neighbour has had about 5 weeks of renovation being done. They’re going out to work every day, and I’m being driven demented. So, yes, I’d book into the hotel.

334bu · 21/11/2021 15:27

Personally I'd put the money towards a cleaning company coming in at the end to give house total deep clean, as that dust gets everywhere.

sageandbasil · 21/11/2021 15:32

I would deff do that that's a bargain and would save so much stress

MrsFezziwig · 21/11/2021 15:39

I lived in one room while having the whole house renovated (took 3 months though I did have two holidays during that time). You do have to take care that you’re not getting in the builders way and slowing them down, ditto with the disconnecting and reconnecting stuff.

Now can you tell me where I can have three days at the seaside for £75 please, I’d like to get it booked!

Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed · 21/11/2021 15:52

Where is this mythical magical place for £75, eyes up room.com

ChequerBoard · 21/11/2021 15:54

I'm in the middle of having my kitchen replaced right now. I'm lucky in that we have an annexe with a small galley kitchen that we renovated first and can escape there when the noisy/dirty work is being done.

For £75 I would definitely book the hotel. If it's good and close by, you will still be able to pop home when needed for decisions and to check up on progress.

5foot5 · 21/11/2021 16:26

He thinks we are throwing money away if we stay in a hotel and why cant I just go and sit in his Mums or my Mums all day, its not forever after all!

So I am getting the impression that he is out at work during the day and you are not. Therefore you would be the one having to put up with the noise and the upheaval as he will be missing that as work will have stopped for the day when he gets home. Am I right?

In any case I would say go for it. I remember having our kitchen done and it was bad enough without having walls knocked down. The limited cooking facilities and having to do the washing up in the bath!

Bonitalazenia · 21/11/2021 16:33

@MrsFezziwig@Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed its Dover. And its definitely that price!

Not unreasonable in the slightest. We moved into my in laws for a week while ours was done. If they hadn’t been so generous we’d have got an AirBnB or similar.

Bonitalazenia · 21/11/2021 16:40

@5foot5 I work Friday and Saturday nights 12hr shifts, so most weekdays I'm at home. He is in and out (school bus driver).
I think I'm going to go for it. And I think I'll offer my neighbour half the money to do the same as she is also a shift worker (she is also getting her kitchen done in the next few months.

Wish I could have
My DH did our kitchen bits open plan at the end of the living room. It was 4 months of hell, just a sink and cooker.when the sink was removed, kneeling on the bathroom floor washing up in the bath. When it came to the bathroom,he was working 40 miles away,so 90 minutes plus commute. Not time to do much in the week, washing up in the kitchen sink this time, just a toilet in the bathroom, Chucking water down it from the water butt to flush, another 4 months. Builders in for re building conservatory 3 weeks of mess

HunterHearstHelmsley · 21/11/2021 16:43

I'd rather stay in a noisy house during the day than in a Premier Inn. Absolutely nothing against Premier Inn, I use them regularly. I'd hate being stuck in one all day though.

Bonitalazenia · 21/11/2021 16:43

@Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed Dover.. not the most salubrious place but we love it!

LadyRoughDiamond · 21/11/2021 16:59

To be honest OP, judging by the building work i and others I know have had done recently, that three days could be extended indefinitely. We’ve faced materials shortages, component delays and issues with key craftsmen not being available due to illness and other jobs over-running. I wouldn’t take the risk.

sansucre · 21/11/2021 17:08

My parents did this in the 80s when we moved house and the kitchen (and other parts of the house) were being done. They stayed in the 'posh' hotel and my siblings and I, plus nanny, stayed in the local Travelodge. I think we were there for a fortnight or so.
