To book into a hotel whilst new kitchen is installed?

DH thinks I'm nuts! We live literally 300yards from a Premier Inn. I want to book us in for 3 nights whilst the dirty / heavy / noisy work is done. It involves removing a brick wall, levelling a floor, rewiring etc. I'm dreading it! We have only recently moved in, its a seafront apartment and the novelty hasn't worn off for DH yet (or me to an extent)
Hotel is just over £75 for the whole 3 nights (room only), bargain! I think I can cope with the noise of the lighter work, tiling etc later on. He thinks we are throwing money away if we stay in a hotel and why cant I just go and sit in his Mums or my Mums all day, its not forever after all!

It would make things simpler for the builders, who have to spend time at the end of each day making sure things are left in an inhabitable state (for eg, making sure the heating works).

I suggest either staying at the mums house and depositing the £75 into the DC's accounts, or staying at the mums house and putting the £75 towards a much needed break.

lynxca16 · 21/11/2021 17:20

Book it, just that really.
Have been through big renovations and honestly for £75 for 3 nights it is so worth it - you will have your own clean warm base, shower etc. and the builders will not waste time connecting and disconnecting or tiding each day.

@speakout

I wouldn't.

I had my kitchen remodelled- included removing a wall, resiting stairs etc.
The builders had ongoing questions throughout the day- just little things, but crucial to the finished work- where lights/light fittings were to be placed, choices of materials, unforseen problems when the wall was removed which meant more radical work or leaving exposed stonework ( which turned into an attractive feature in the end. The turn of the stairs, height of a new winow ledge- loads of other little decisions that needed to be made.

I absolutely wanted to be around when the work was being done.

I would spend the money on meals out in the evening so you don;t have to cook while your house is in a muddle

Absolutely agree with this, you need to be there because you'll be asked things you never thought of. Even small things like which way do you want the cupboard doors to open can make a big difference to the useability of and the look of a finished kitchen, where the handles go etc. let alone the major issues.

Do it. I've booked into a hotel when I was having my living room and bedroom painted as I am very sensitive to the paint smells which trigger severe migraines.

Same when I had the floors redone across the whole house. My friend supervised it and was here with the workmen and I came back relaxed to a clean and finished job as he supervised the end of work clean etc.

A lot less stress for me and a few days away in a hotel, I was available for any questions by phone or Skype.

Notreallyhappy · 21/11/2021 17:53

I'd leave for a week !! Just had mine done bloody nightmare for 2 weeks

BrilliantBetty · 21/11/2021 20:18

Great idea!! And you are so close and can easily pop in and out throughout the day... but have somewhere quiet to rest / work when you want to. It's so cheap too, never knew you could stay in a hotel by the sea for just £25 per night.. where is this?!

VeganCheesePlease · 21/11/2021 20:31

I would 100 per cent do it!

BackBackBack · 21/11/2021 20:37

In theory it sounds great. But having not long finished a full house reno, I'd be nervous about the builders having questions during the day and your or your partner not being there to answer them. Lots of little niggly things where it's really helpful to be on-site and be able to answer queries straight away.

Purpleberet · 21/11/2021 20:43

We did this for a few nights when having our kitchen done and I loved it. Premier plus room, didn’t cost much, but we made the most of it and ate out every night it felt like such a treat. Well worth it!

Twospaniels · 21/11/2021 20:46

Do it!
We have two dogs and thought it was just going to be a nightmare, so we rented a holiday cottage for a week. Best money spent.

thenewduchessofhastings · 21/11/2021 20:50

Just do it;the builders have your mobile number and it's easy enough to nip back to your home if needed

No- because builders won't be phoning you for every little niggle. And they will often be attempting a piece of work that they think is right but not what you wanted- so if you are there you can prevent mistakes before they turn into disasters.

Hippychicken1 · 21/11/2021 21:27

Well I went on holiday to Turkey years go
When I was having my kitchen done
Two weeks in the sun and the fuckers still hasn’t completely finished the work but all the shit noisy stuff was done

Hippychicken1 · 21/11/2021 21:28

Oh and I left my other half there to sort out the builders and kitchen fitters 😂

BonnyandPoppy · 21/11/2021 21:39

We are having our kitchen, utility, pantry and dining room done at the moment and it’s a nightmare with lots of dust! We have had no kitchen since the beginning of October and have had new floors, walls taken down, new electrics, new windows etc etc. We are finally getting to the clean bits and the flooring is being laid tomorrow and kitchen install starting on Friday which will take a few days. Then we have to wait for the worktop to be installed. I’m hoping it’s usable by Christmas.

I would move out if I were you though as others said you do need to be around to answer questions and stop them when they do the wrong things before it gets too late to change.

nannybeach · 22/11/2021 07:39

Lady, you are correct. My best friend has been living in a building site since March,in the summer the builders were on site 7am til 6pm I was very impressed. Then there's material shortages, driver shortages. But she said to me the other day, they had been on site for a month, and there IS plenty of other jobs they could be getting on with. I'm not a cold person, but her windows and doors have wood over them, there's no heating and it's bloody freezing. Have always found builders under estimate, but I've rarely had one been onsite a full day. Also got 2 dogs I had to try and keep them out of the way, last one left the gate open. They'd done a lot of work previously knew we had dogs. Last thing I said t

nannybeach · 22/11/2021 07:40

to him, went straight out and checked it was wide open!

nannybeach · 22/11/2021 07:41

Meant to say her builders HADN'T been on site for a month

clarepetal · 22/11/2021 08:05

Just do it!
