To ask for your coffee

Coffee is now something I endure rather than enjoy. I usually go for whatever I can get. Probably taylors as that's in a shop I pass on thr way to work although supermarket own brands are often purchased as well.

But I'm.bored of them and the disgusting weird tasting yuck I have in the tin at the moment has tipped me over the edge .

What do you all put in your Coffee machines.

I want a nice coffee I can sit and relax with that serves a purpose a bit more than just perking me up for the school run

Also I use this filter machine from Melitta, a well loved German brand - ideal if its just for you as its small, and its very easy. Hit the button and thats it. Very retro styling!

@LosingTheWill2

‘Not environmentally friendly but I enjoy it’. I’m always astounded by these comments. There’s something so brazen about acknowledging you’re doing something to damage the earth just because it brings you pleasure.

Anyway, re OP…I find cafetière coffee very muddy and unpleasant. An aeropress produces a much better cup, if you aren’t liking your ‘bog standard’ machine. It’s light and portable, too, so you can take it to work / camping.

Or a pour over system also gives a lovely, smooth cup, and is even less faff than a coffee machine.

As for the coffee itself, why not try a subscription service? Pact is excellent and has good intentions regarding the growers (unless you prefer your coffee with destruction as above). They do various ones - and I think also an advent calendar - so you can try a few before finding one you like.

FluffyBooBoo · 21/11/2021 08:00

It’s coffee, not crack

So? Op isn't enjoying it... I tend not to choose to eat or drink things that I have to 'endure'.

Underoveraround · 21/11/2021 08:02

I’ve got pretty much every way to make coffee, and my thoughts…(I drink black coffee).

We grind fresh from bean - either Pact or Organic Rainforest blend from Costco.

Gaggia espresso machine is far and away the best. Smooth, delicious, not at all bitter, but strong.

Aeropress is my second favourite - really close to an espresso machine cup and great for camping / work but more faff. You can buy a reusable metal filter so no need to use paper filters - less waste / expense.

Pour over - super easy to make - just leave alone to drop through whilst you get on with other stuff - nice smooth cup, not as strong as the others.

I hate the stove top ones - I find them too bitter, but that could well be user error as I cannot argue with the Italians when it comes to coffee (or most things you put in your mouth, tbh).

Cold brew - super easy to make and delicious, but extremely caffeinated and obvs drunk cold. Makes the best espresso martinis!

I can’t believe how invested I am in coffee 😆 good luck OP

Nescafé instant Blush

Tappetytap · 21/11/2021 08:14

Consuela coffee by amazon is the best filter cofeee I've ever tasted. It pains me to say that as we have a lot of independent coffee roasters by us that I keep trying but they don't beat this on on taste.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 21/11/2021 08:17

As a side note op, have you had covid? I did and since then, despite getting my smell and taste back, coffee tastes a bit meh. I also usually drink Taylor's so not sure if they've changed or my nose has! Watching your thread for inspiration. On the maker front, for me, nothing tops a bialetti stove top.

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/11/2021 09:07

Wow thank you all for all the suggestions. I have ordered a moka pot. And some of the suggested coffees. Hopefully by this time next week I'll have it all and will have found something I really like.

These websites make it all look so lovely. Its gonna be expensive 🤣

If it all turns out better I can ditch the coffee machine which will be nice space wise

Waitrose is great for coffee. I like their El Salvadorean. Their Brazillian (which I find impossible to get from other supermarkets) is nice too.

Practicebeingpatient · 21/11/2021 09:19

I'm so,picky about coffee. have Lavazza decaf in my bog-standard filter machine. I love it. However on a recent weekend break I couldn't get `lavazza so I bought the Morrisons own brand decaf. It was lovely and a third of the price. When I have finished my current stash of Lavazza I will be stocking up on the Morrisons.

SymbollocksInteractionism · 21/11/2021 09:20

I have a coffee machine and still much prefer coffee from my cafeteire. Favourite just now is the aldi columbian.

PraxisandHypatia · 21/11/2021 09:33

exhalecoffee.com/

Highly recommend and definitely a bit different! It's roasted and shipped to your door within 48hrs I believe!

'higher than any other tested for polyphenols, bursting with active antioxidants and one of the richest natural sources of Vitamin B3 (Niacin) in your diet. It's also organic and free from mycotoxins, pesticides and other nasties.'

I make mine with a filter.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/11/2021 09:49

Aldi's Columbian arabica; I've honestly never found anything like it outside France

Oddly enough I preferred the smell of coffee to its often bitter taste, until I discovered this stuff ... make it strong and enjoy Smile

MilduraS · 21/11/2021 11:02

I love Vietnamese ground coffee. It's a treat coffee rather than a drink all day coffee. Really strong with a chocolatey note.

I'm lucky to work with someone from Vietnam so he often brings me back cheap coffee but when I run out I buy from here: www.vietnamesecoffeeco.com/buy-vietnamese-coffee-online/

The house blend and Sua blend are my favourites.

Unicornsanctuary · 21/11/2021 12:25

@Underoveraround the guru says with the moka: don’t over pack the filter, it gets more bitter the longer it takes to get water through the grounds. Use a little less water if you want it stronger, make sure the heat is high so water moves up quickly and stop heating as soon as bottom is empty as the coffee doesn’t like being overheated, and there can be bitterness from the grounds drying out sending some last, but burnt, coffee up. His babbo leaves the lid open as he’s too deaf to hear the bubble change now!

SecretSpAD · 21/11/2021 12:44

We spent £000's on fancy coffee machines, but hated the coffee and ended up with a £10 cafetière from John Lewis which is,perfect. Hate all those pod things as you just end up with froth on top which we hate.

We are usually coffee snobs, but have been drinking starbucks Verona blend recently and it is gorgeous. We also buy big bags of blue mountain blend from amazon - it's not the Jamaica one but fab coffee.

I have to admit that the only time I tried Jamaican blue mountain I was very underwhelmed but would welcome any recommendations about where the best ones can be sourced?

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/11/2021 12:44

Really helpful tips! thanks

I get Jacobs Kroenung from one of the Polish shops, it's what we bought in Germany and I love it, I use a cafetiere. My late OH bought a Tassimo, he had fads, and I sometimes use that, especially for visitors, I have a huge amount of cappucinno stuff he left me with!

hellololabells2019 · 21/11/2021 12:51

Coffelink espresso blend

AmyDudley · 21/11/2021 13:19

I use M and S decaf in my cafetiere - I don't find it bitter at all in fact very mild. I'm sure you know but never put boiling water onto coffee and keep your ground coffee in the fridge. Ground coffee also freezes well.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 21/11/2021 13:20

Why not a hand grinder and porcelain filter holder? (You can see that I don't know the correct terminology). Just boile water and pour slowly over the filter over the cup.

That way there's no need for electrical items and you get freshly ground coffee all the time.

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/11/2021 09:27

Blue Mountain verdict- taste is pleasant enough . Its not at all bitter and no weird after taste. But it is a little on the weak side. I put twice as many scoops I'm as I usually would it still tastes quite weak.

However I am aware that a) its amazon so possibly not authentic.
B) my coffee machine is dying anyway so probably clogged up and not working properly so will make finale decision when moka pot arrives.

Still it's much nicer than the one I had before so that's a plus .

Waiting on deliveries of 3 more coffees
