To ask what’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve eaten at?

I think for me, it’s a restaurant called “Tattu”. They’re dotted all around the UK and was so excited to try it but the food was so average yet they charge £100+ for two people based on a starter and main HmmConfused. Everyone who I know has been there absolutely loved it so maybe it’s just DP & I!

What’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve been to?

I love Dishoom, contrary to others. The Edinburgh one is glorious. They treat their staff really well and have a great approach to looking after others.
Lockdown was saved by their bacon naan home delivery kit.

Shortbread49 · 19/11/2021 19:05

This is a great thread, re Bettys in York the little one on Stonegate was the nicest but that has now sadly closed down and become a gin shopSmile

MiloAndEddie · 19/11/2021 19:06

Agree with miller and Carter. I get it serves a purpose but it’s chuffing expensive!

gabsdot45 · 19/11/2021 19:09

Nandos

PPCD · 19/11/2021 19:12

@LubaLuca

Wahaca. Most of what I ordered was burnt, the rest was cold. The staff couldn't have cared less.
Which Wahaca did you go to?
Sunbeams09 · 19/11/2021 19:12

Agree with Nando’s and Hard Rock Cafe. I was quite underwhelmed with Be Our Guest at Disneyworld, had to book months in advance for a cupcake and some mediocre stew!

I do love Bettys though Blush

Naughtynovembertree · 19/11/2021 19:17

@Wallabyone

I was planning in going to park row
Can you say what it was like inside? Fun, good vibe? Assume you ate in main room and not the special room experience?

MeatyRvita · 19/11/2021 19:19

Dishoom, it was ok but I’ve had nicer Indian food. It was all just a bit ‘meh’

Naughtynovembertree · 19/11/2021 19:19

I really surprised people expect long expanded chains like nando to be any good. When they first came out they were because they had to establish themselves. Then franchises came out and that initial desire to please gets lost.

ellie21 · 19/11/2021 19:35

The Man Behind The Curtain. We had the taster menu - one course was a lavender and raw prawn monstrosity. It still makes me gip thinking about it.

hopeishere · 19/11/2021 19:43

@TooBigForMyBoots

Ox. Everyone I know raves about it but I found it a very expensive disappointment.

The Merchant Afternoon Tea. Samey, bland, boring and limited.

I like Ox but was still hungry afterwards!

We went to a Jamie Oliver place in Cornwall that was shite. Also a famous steak place in Dublin that was awful. Even now I can't believe we actually paid for it!!

DirtyDancing · 19/11/2021 19:46

@Lachimolala

Sketch. So expensive for ridiculously mediocre food and you can’t move for the people taking selfie’s everywhere.
DH and I would agree with this. Load of rubbish. As soon as we didn't order a bottle of expensive wine the service went downhill dramatically. I had just found out I was pregnant and not drinking and DH was happy with a couple of beers. Rude and crap food.

Oxo Tower was equally mediocre & we were packed in like sardines too

Oneforthemoneytwo · 19/11/2021 20:17

@TatianaBis we have been many times, certainly more than a dozen and find it completely consistent. Better food in lots of places but for us the whole package works.

WeAreTheHeroes · 19/11/2021 20:24

Agree with pps about Gaucho. It starts with the highly pretentious thing with showing you the different steaks on a wooden board before you order...and goes further downhill from there.

LosingTheWill2 · 19/11/2021 20:27

Arabica, borough market. Service sooooo slow, tiny portions, overpriced. I’ve never paid so much to leave a restaurant hungry

toconclude · 19/11/2021 20:36

@Fatgalslim

Fifteen (Jamie Oliver), shite
Also the late and not at all great Jamie's Italian. Blergh.
WheekestLink · 19/11/2021 20:38

Miller and Carter...meh. I feel sad that I paid that much money and I also feel sad that people raving about it clearly haven't tasted a proper steak.

Gohugatree · 19/11/2021 20:47

Agree with pp that small, local restaurants, pubs and cafes are often much better (and cheaper). We have an excellent local pub (better steaks than The Witchery and no paying extra for side dishes) where a really nice bottle of red is £20. A lovely Indian restaurant run by a Bangladeshi family with 'Indian' food, and also lots of authentic Bangladeshi food. BYO because they don't want to sell alcohol but have no issue with people taking their own, so a 2 course meal for about £18 per head, we can splurge a bit on the wine we take and have a fantastic night for £50. Nice brasserie who do a 3 course menu for £25 Sunday to Thursday.

Yang Sing in Manchester. Listed as just about the top restaurant in Manchester’s Chinatown. We went for lunch on Wednesday and it was so disappointing. My ginger beef dumplings were like fatty, greasy, lukewarm lumps of something a bit meaty and I couldn’t taste any ginger at all. DPs soup was ok. His curry tasted like a Sainsbury ready meal and my beef noodle dish was greasy, lukewarm and really boring. Very few veggies in it. After I’d finished the dumplings the waiter took my plate but left my chopsticks which had bits of food on them propped up on a fork and bits of fat dropped off them onto the tablecloth. The amount of food was very generous but was really poor. We were going to go there or Tattu - doesn’t sound like that would have been the best choice either.

The Ivy Harrogate. Without doubt the rudest, most disinterested and unprofessional staff I have ever come across. It was quite staggering. Don’t know if we have been lucky but I’ve never really been on the receiving end of rude restaurant staff. But my God this lot were awful. The food was average at best. I would never go to any Ivy again.

We went to the Yang Sing for out silver wedding anniversary this summer.
My in laws had hyped it up for years and we'd been to the Little Yang Sing about 10 years ago and it was amazing. I was really disappointed. No atmosphere and really mediocre food. Such a let down.

Took my DD to the Ivy in Manchester for lunch for her birthday and it was excellent.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 19/11/2021 20:53

Rainforest cafe. I realise it’s intended for kids, but some of the worst food I’ve ever eaten. Kids have tastebuds too!

@BoredtoTiers

I love Martin Wishart's Brasserie 'The Honours' so I was surprised at how disappointing I found his Michelin starred place.

The food was okay, but not as amazing as I expected for the price. I expect tasting menu dishes to be small, but this felt stingy. Even the hand poured paired wine felt like it was as little as they could get away with offering.

I don't expect to come away from a Michelin starred place feeling like I've been to an all you can eat buffet, but I'm pretty tiny so I do expect to feel like I've been adequately fed and watered Grin

I loved The Honours too, it’s a shame it’s closed.

I have to say that I find the tasting menu at Martin Wishart just right. I always feel satisfied but not bursting at the seams. If you want more food I would go to The Kitchin. I thought I was going to explode 3 courses in. Just far too much food for me.

Annexlife · 19/11/2021 21:04

Sketch...all fur coat no knickers.

Geminijust · 19/11/2021 21:20

Titantic, Marco Pierre White restaurant long since closed. Miniscule portions, had to call at the burger van on the way home Grin Also agree re Nandos. Absolutely love Pizza Express though. Tempted to try Dishoom but worried it won't live up to our local curry house (or even the Sainsbury "takeaway" curry packs that we love on a Friday night Grin)

Whadda · 19/11/2021 21:22

@RallySooney

The ivy in Dublin.

Hugely disappointing.

Surely the protests outside gave you a clue?
amysaurus87 · 19/11/2021 21:24

I find Miller and Carter is hit and miss and very much depends on which one you are in, there are a few within a reasonable distance from me and 1 of them is better than the rest.

Afternoon Tea at The Ritz is massively overrated, poor service and you're crammed in...I much prefer Afternoon Tea at Fortnum and Mason.

I'd add Gilgamesh in Camden, good food but overpriced and the service is not the best!
