I think for me, it’s a restaurant called “Tattu”. They’re dotted all around the UK and was so excited to try it but the food was so average yet they charge £100+ for two people based on a starter and main HmmConfused. Everyone who I know has been there absolutely loved it so maybe it’s just DP & I!

What’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve been to?

@Practicebeingpatient

Gauchos. It's absolutely pitch black in there. I have perfect vision and had to use the torch on my phone to read the menu. I got lost going to the loo. The steaks are WAY overpriced for what they are. IMO they are also over salted (although TBF that's true in a lot of Argentinian restaurants). Worst of all, the wines aren't described by the grape variety, the region or even by flavour but by the name of the maker and the altitude of the vineyard. It's the most pretentious thing I've ever seen and completely unhelpful to any customer who doesn't have a detailed knowledge of Argentine terroirs

I've been three times, the first two times i absolutely loved it and raved about it to everyone. Convinced my manager to take his wife for a special birthday and he had such a terrible experience I regretted ever suggesting it.

The third time I went it was awful. They mixed up DH's virgin mojito with my alcoholic one and were arsey about making them fresh so we knew which was which (DH doesn't drink), the chocolate mousse was literally slopped into a bowl, the place lacked atmosphere and the food wasn't quite as good as we remembered. We've not been back since.

Rick Steins place in Padstow. I can cook fish better than that!
Yep, I didn’t rate it either
LizzieSiddal · 19/11/2021 14:25

The Ivy- the members club in the west end. I was seriously underwhelmed.

Earwigworries · 19/11/2021 14:28

The Ivy … very average

Served brunch with egg with uncooked white .. just yuck

ComeOnNow21 · 19/11/2021 14:28

100% agree.

Dentistlakes · 19/11/2021 14:28

Really surprised about the Martin Wishart comments. Imo it’s far better than The Kitchin, not snooty at all. The Kitchin is like being in a Scottish theme part with the tartan everywhere, portions are massive and their sommeliers upsells the wine. It’s very commercial.

PerditaNitt · 19/11/2021 14:30

Any Atul Kochchar restaurant I have been to has sadly disappointed. Love the guy on tv, but the restaurants are not worth the money.

Hoppers was a disaster too - i adore the other JKS restaurants (Trishna, gymkhana) but this was so disappointing.

Bread street kitchen was terrible - I am a vegetarian so had low expectations from a Ramsey restaurant, but it was worse than I had imagined. Good cocktails did take the edge off…!

ComeOnNow21 · 19/11/2021 14:31

100% agree with Shamoo about the Fat Duck. Was top of my bucket list but came out hungry, a bit queasy (too many gels) and a grand lighter

ColinRobinson · 19/11/2021 14:31

Closed now and wasn’t open for long at all (unsurprisingly) but a cafe/bistro opened by Masterchef winner Mat Follas at Chesil beach in Dorset. Looked lovely but was an utter disaster - slow service, surly stressed out staff, greasy almost inedible food, and a wine list which was ridiculously overpriced (I’m not averse to a £30 bottle of wine but not when you can get it for seven quid in Asda).

Figgit · 19/11/2021 14:31

Agree with the person who said The Pig. Also Dishoom (mouldy food), although admittedly their staff were very apologetic and comped the meal.

PerditaNitt · 19/11/2021 14:32

Agree with all the PP on wahaca. I really want to love it - the menu sounds so nice on paper, but absolutely “meh” in reality.

HanukahMatata · 19/11/2021 14:32

Noma in Copenhagen
It really wasn't that tasty

FuckYouCorona · 19/11/2021 14:33

The rainforest cafe. Overpriced glorified Mcdonalds shite.
Planet Hollywood too. Fuck right off with your 12% service charge added on automatically! Angry

generalh · 19/11/2021 14:34

One of the Ivy spin offs. Overated food over priced just for the brand name

generalh · 19/11/2021 14:37

We had a lovely meal in Windsor at half term...
Meimo! Great service and delicious tagine.

uggmum · 19/11/2021 14:37

I went to Tim Horton's last night.
It was awful. The burger was completely cold.

I sent it back. The replacement was colder and also very dry.

I won't return

UhOhOops · 19/11/2021 14:39

@spookysoul

Miller & Carter. Every time I’m excited to go and then it never lives up to my expectations. There’s a small bar & grill in my hometown that does much much better steak.
Miller and Carter for me too.

Lettuce wedge, wtf???

KatherineJaneway · 19/11/2021 14:39

Rick Steins place in Padstow. I can cook fish better than that!

Totally. I went there expecting to be wowed but I've had far better fish elsewhere. Apparently he has nothing to do with the place, it is all his ex wife's.

Any Atul Kochchar restaurant I have been to has sadly disappointed. Love the guy on tv, but the restaurants are not worth the money.

I'd recommend Kaniska, the black dal, the butter chicken and the chicken tikka pie are amazing.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/11/2021 14:40

Afternoon tea at Harrods - chipped plates, underwhelming food and staff offhand to the point of being offensive

Squills · 19/11/2021 14:43

Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's was the most overrated restaurant I've ever eaten in... the food was just awful.

It has now closed.

WheelieBinPrincess · 19/11/2021 14:45

I went somewhere got lunch recently (west London wanky gastro pub) where everything on the lunch menu came with accompanying ‘gem’.

Halloumi wrap with gem. Brioche burger with gem.

It was just gem lettuce. Why couldn’t they just say gem lettuce Confused

verymiddleaged · 19/11/2021 14:52

I'd forgotten about the 3 chimneys, the raw oysters were stunning but when they started cooking things it really wasn't that special.

I liked Benares but went a long time ago, about 17 years.

Jamie Oliver's Italian was grim.

Tilltheend99 · 19/11/2021 14:55

There are certain chain restaurants that are kinda shit but I love them and Bella Italia is one of those.

Used to be able to order off the menu stuff if they had the ingredients.

They should bring back ‘The Godfather’ sundae though.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 19/11/2021 14:56

Ah yes. A dear colleague had raved about it so much, that I didn't have the heart to tell her it was a bit meh.

In Canada Tim Hortons is like a cross between Greg’s and Costa, with fresh baked goods and take away coffee.

If ordering from a U.K. branch I would only really recommend the donut bites/balls and the Frech Vanilla coffee (coffee with maple syrup) but that coffee alone is worth it.
