To want to pay cleaner by bank transfer not cash.

Starryskiesinthesky · 18/11/2021 07:41

Cleaner wants paid in cash but I never have cash so would prefer to pay by bank transfer. Fact she wants cash makes me think she’s not declaring it. What do others do and do you care if they are not declaring it? £15 per hour if it makes a difference. Thanks.

I always have to pay my Avon rep in cash. It can be inconvenient sometimes especially if it’s something like £24.

Worth asking your rep if they have an online store. I get mine still delivered by the rep, but I order and pay online. Also if I want anything between orders you can order online and have it delivered by post, but they still get a commission as their customer.

This insidious move to a cashless society is really damaging, and yet people are sleepwalking into it without even thinking of the implications.

I'm a cleaner, fully registered as a sole trader with HMRC, pay all my taxes and NI. I only take cash payments (never lost a client), which I then put into my bank as I may want a mortgage in the future. I spend cash when I can, and I boycott any retailers I can which don't take cash.

As for your dilemma OP, I suppose it's whether or not it's worth the hassle of going for the cash versus the hassle of employing another cleaner who would be an unknown quantity.

Courtier · 18/11/2021 14:03

I hated paying ours in cash. I never had exactly £18 as I don't use cash so always had to handover £20.

ohwhattodowithmylife · 18/11/2021 14:35

I have had cleaning jobs for exactly as some have said, was in an abusive marriage and got a few cleaning jobs to stash away cash to help me get away. He would check all my bank accounts - even not joint ones.
Getting cash meant I could make a plan and get out.
Good cleaners are hard to find, if people wouldn't pay cash I could find other work no problem, I guess it depends how much you value them/their work.

I always wondered this though - whose responsibility is it to have exact change? Why don't tradespeople carry cash for change
TeeBee · 18/11/2021 14:47

God, my cleaner is amazing and does a grubby job for £15/hour. I'd pay her in unicorn tears if that's what she preferred. A good cleaner is hard to come by. Worth a rare trip to the cashpoint.

Needmoresleep · 18/11/2021 14:54

@ohwhattodowithmylife

I hope things are better now. Financial control/coersion is not uncommon and having access to your own money can be very important.

CoastalWave · 18/11/2021 14:58

I like getting paid in cash as it gives me cash to hand out to kids etc. Plus I can save it up without husband knowing about it - for presents etc.

It's all declared, just maybe not to my husband!!!!

Mondaymindy · 18/11/2021 14:59

I clean and am paid bt bank tx. I didnt get a choice really if i wanted the job .

Oftenithinkaboutit · 18/11/2021 15:13

Cleaners.

At a whim can be cancelled. No payment
Absolutely zero job security
No sick pay
No Maternity pay
No parental leave

It’s a vulnerable job at it’s most vulnerable.

Yes if you start a cleaning business then you are in a very different position to the cleaner that I use (not through an agency. Haemorrhaged jobs during lockdown. Often told not to come on the day or turns up and 5 hour job is actually “just the two of today please”)

So a little request like cash, tiny bit of hassle of me, like water off a Duck’s back

gofg · 18/11/2021 19:23

And although I know some people never leave their home, the vast, vast majority do and go to places with or near a cash point, it’s ridiculous that people are pretending it’s so difficult. Cash points are common. I live rurally and have access to cashpoints as I drive my kids to school/college/ go to the shop/garage/supermarket. As I said, some people are ridiculously hard work.

I'm in NZ and I'm sitting here laughing at many of these responses. Rural in the UK is so very different to rural in NZ, where people live a lot further away from towns - and yet I've never heard anyone say it was such a faff to get cash!!

MrsDThomas · 18/11/2021 19:30

Im rural. Having cash is a must, so make the effort to have cash in the house . Not everyone uses cards for transactions. I take out £100 a week and use it. Hate the thought of banks watch my every bloody spend.

yikerspipers · 18/11/2021 19:31

It's not the getting of the cash. It's remembering to get it and then having to buy something in the nearby shop to get the exact change you need. It's not the worst thing ever, but engaging a cleaner is meant to cut down on things you need to worry about. In do it, but would much prefer not having to pay in cash.

What the problem with the responses? I'm seeing a balanced discussion actually.
DeepaBeesKit · 18/11/2021 19:36

I dont pay anyone cash. I don't care if it's my business if they declare earnings for tax purposes or not. It's my prerogative to choose only to acquire services from people who are happy to accept bank transfers.

Ericaequites · 18/11/2021 19:36

I’d rather pay cash for casual labor and small amounts. The Government knows entirely too much about our lives as it is. They don’t need any more money to waste.

notanothertakeaway · 18/11/2021 20:56

I've always tended to assume that if someone wants to be paid in cash, it's likely because they're not declaring their earnings

And it's fine not to make that easier for them. Schools, hospitals etc would all be better funded if everyone paid their taxes

But, some interesting points here about people wanting cash so they know they have been paid, rather than having to chase unpaid invoices

MurielSpriggs · 18/11/2021 21:17

@AwaAnBileYerHeid

How do some people get through life finding everything so difficult and troublesome? My god.
They avoid the difficult and troublesome things. (Eg use a cleaner who doesn't require cash!)
MrsDThomas · 18/11/2021 21:21

Assuming is a dangerous thing, never assume.

lisaandalan · 18/11/2021 21:24

It would not bother me if she is not declaring, I'd just get out a few months money at a time and give it to her weekly and then just get more out a few weeks before I needed it. X

PooWillyNameChange · 18/11/2021 21:27

I do but only about once a month I think? We live on a fair chunk of land so DH kicks about with the kids on it at the weekends. To be fair I know barely anyone in this country and am 8.5 months pregnant and working long hours... once on mat leave I'm sure l v
will venture out more but right now not so much, no. It's more about adding to the mental list of things to do though. Would feel mortified if I forgot the cash but also a 20 min round trip to get cash when I hire a cleaner due to time constraints would put me out quite a bit.

DH doesn't drive but at least a transfer he can sort for me. Luckily cleaner actually specifically said no cash for whatever reason so we are off the hook! I can't remember the last time I used cash for anything, to be honest.

Marvellousmadness · 19/11/2021 01:03

Pay her how you want :)

It's her responsibility whether she declares it or not.

Yes it a faff getting cash if you're largely cashless yourself!
